See box,
I absolutly love the music, have bought the CD, love that too. I don't get why so many people hate it the way they do.

Box, to make a long story short, you are saying Phantom of the Upma sucks bad and should be avoided like the diarrea. This is based on experience and not necessarily watching the movie
But I agree with your theory. People do it all the time.
Joel Schumacher, didn't he almost kill the Batman franchise? That is another important criteria in choosing to watch a movie.

Well, most of the time I just watch a film for the heck of it, but seeing how I don't generally go to the movies a lot to begin with, I want to make informed choices.
But mistakes happen; I mean, I fully expected Shrek 2 to be a very good film, and it was horrendous.
Heh, to each their own. I just wanted to make it clear that I have my reasons for liking or disliking a film, and that it is often possible to determine that without having watched it entirely. I mean, everything I've been told about TPOTO is pointing towards a truly agonizing viewing experience.
Oh, and I liked Beauty and the Beast a lot, just to clarify that I do not dislike those types of films by virtue of their genre.

You're making something necessarily complicated unnecessarily simple
One interesting thing that one of my profs said: his collegeaus who are in the film department and film experts, have a hard time staying awake during most films that they watch because they know what is going to happen next. I think some of the critics are pretty much in that same situation; I'm positive that's one of the major reasons behind the cruel treatment films like TDAT receive.

Box, for eg. lot of people saw the trailers of let's say a Catwoman and decided not to watch that movie.
With TDAT the same did not apply. Even though it was very predictable it was a summer popcorn movie and a lot people liked it.
The Phantom of the Umbrella is another issue.
Lot of people have seen the play and that is not necessarily good for the movie.
Joel Schumacher
A musical with nobodies. Chicago had lot of good stars.
Horrible reviews. For platform release you need good reviews.
It was a very easy decision for the majority to avoid this.

How dare you call the great Minnie Driver a nobody
Moulin Rouge did bad even with big stars, a lot of publicity (Kidman's divorce, premiere in Cannes, etc.). And the film was very well received (I liked it as well, it's got spunk).
Oh, and I think TPOTO will surpass Moulin Rouge's gross, but will be extremely lucky to gross half of Chicago's total. This might be an indication that the musical is not quite ready for a comeback just yet.

I wouldn't disagree but the one thing that these two FILMS (not plays, but films) will have a problem with is that in 10 years people will really only remember Moulin Rouge! and remember Chicago more for its Best Picture status than the film itself. That's what really counts.
Phantom of the Opera will probably forever be thought of, first and foremost, as a stage show, not a film.
Personally, I think part of the reason why I don't want to see Phantom of the Opera film is that without Michael Crawford the music just... well... it isn't Phantom of the Opera. I'm afraid his performance/voice is forever tied to the stage show for me. I downloaded some samples and a few full songs on streaming and I have to tell you... the film cast has no grasp on the material.

That's a great point you bring up, because it wasn't until quite a bit after its release that I decided to look into it, and was surprised at how much I liked it.
I makes me wish Luhrman's Alexander was in release right now and not Stone's I hope he still goes ahead with it; he could give us a masterpiece.

I also think the popularity of stage shows like Phantom of the Opera are really hard to gauge with the box office. Does anybody think a cinema production of Cats would do well these days? Or a real movie version of A Chorus Line? Arguably they are far more popular and well known than Phanom of the Opera.
What about Rent? Do we think it can do $100 million? Chicago had loads of big stars and Miramax so it had a lot going for it. It also had the benefit of being a much less known production.
Phantom is unknowns with a questionable director, with a studio who doesn't seem to care (lack of ads, Million Dollar Baby, etc.), under the weight of 16+ years of history with more impressive casts.

I don't think that after Stone's fiasco anyone will dare to bring Alexander to the big screen anytime soon.

That's very close. lower the sunday drop to around 10%-15% just looke at some movies from 93 and 82 not one had a sunday drop over 15% that I looked at
I'm almost positive that movies from 1993 and 1982 will have the same box office patterns as 2004/2005.

Acualy it probably will Lecter  Lemony Snicket Increased 53% last saturday than another 27% on sunday. The fact that it increased that much on saturday should be reason enough Lecter. In 99 no kids film increased more than 30% on saturday, infact they had large sunday increases. This film is performing more like Bicentennial Man and Galaxy Quest so I asumed that over the wknd it would perform more like they did. Is there something wrong with that :?:
