That's what you get for predicting a stupido $75-90m. Was I thinking? Was I???
Lol, I'm actually somewhat happy for Fockers. Happy because 2004 needs a decent hit, not happy cause I wish more of the money would have gone to the animated filmos.
Oh wellos.

These Sunday projections are wild. Will be interesting to see the actuals tomorrow.

Almost every movie even in 99 increased this day. Maybe there a little high but I think it's pretty right.

It looks like The Polar Express won't have post-Christmas legs like I was starting to think it would. Oh well, it should just about pass it's budget before the end of it's run, and that and it's amazing legs earlier this month make me happy.
Meh for Phantom. It won't hit it's budget. Same for The Life Aquatic, unfortunately (although the budget is estimated to be $25-50 million. If it's the lowest of the estimation, it has a chance).
Aviator had a good opening. It will have great legs and have no problem going past it's budget if it sweeps the Oscars.
Snicket is a semi-flop. $102 million total is my projection. If it's really lucky, it may pass $110 million, but nah.
Fockers is the only film this weekend besides Darkness that did surprisingly well, which angers me, because nearly every movie that went under expectations crashed my Derby, and also my contempt for the first movie. :x Total may very well go over $200 million, making it the only real hit of December.
In limited release, Hotel Rwanda opened fairly well, although nothing great. I still see a Best Picture nomination, though, with it's excellent 91% on RT and growing buzz.

You see, the Christmas-themed movies DO decrease after Christmas

The problem is we don't know if it will increase 20% or 50%. It's anybody's guess, and with only 1999 to base on, we could see some bigger differences with actuals on Monday than usual.

Well I hope that nothing changes too much. Its hard to project today's numbers, but I'm sure the studios will be close.

The Sea Inside has one of the worst box office runs for a foreign film I've ever seen. The chance of winning best foreign language oscar is gone now, and this could really jeopardize Bardem's nomination as well.

I think that many foreign movies' US box office run are more worse than The Sea Inside. (eg. INFERNAL AFFAIRS)
However, I think that The Sea Inside's US box office run is a big disappointment for me.

Infernal Affairs was only released in 5 theaters, and it was delayed for more than a year, and it wasn't being pushed at all. Same for many others. They were just dumped to the American market. I'm not comparing with them. For a critically-acclaimed foreign film that is released just in time for awards, I've never seen anything worse.

Word.
And I have no idea why :?
Actually, at the moment, I do not really think Bardem will get a nomination anymore.
However, I also don't think that House of Flying Daggers will win Best Foreign Picture. Some movie will surprise.

Very low for all films, except Fat Albert, Darkness, and Meet the Fockers. Why'd the holdovers fall so hard? Well, I guess the arrival of 6 kinda new release films hurt them.
I shoulda caught Lemony Snicket being frontloaded. It has a little mini-fan base.
Meet the Fockers really killed Spanglish and Ocean's 12. Here's hoping for 200 million!

Very possible, indeed. I predicted a nomination for it all the way.

I just realized something:
About half of the top 11 have a budget over 100 million!
5 of them:
Lemony Snicket
The Aviator
Ocean's 12
The Polar Express
National Treasure
and almost Meet the Fockers and Spanglish, which are at 80 million!

And it is a 3 hour movie.
We couldn't get in either. We almost went to a 9:45 showing of it, but it sold out around 8:00.
Even for Christmas, I wouldn't have expected that.
