Action tentpole, directed by Michael Bay and based on the Hasbro toy robot line, officially opens today on 4,011 screens. Paramount has not yet said how many screens the film played on Monday night.
Par is trying to maximize the July Fourth holiday frame, since Independence Day itself has not traditionally been a huge movie-going day.
"Transformers" wasn't the only pic Monday benefiting from the fact that many people have the day off from work or are looking for things to do with their kids over the holiday.
Disney-Pixar's "Ratatouille," which debuted at No. 1 over the weekend, made an estimated $7.5 million Monday (studios will have more accurate figures later on Tuesday.) Fox's crowd-pleasing actioner "Live Free or Die Hard" took in around $4.3 million.
Paramount and DreamWorks are working hard to manage expectations for "Transformers," exec produced by Steven Spielberg and starring Shia LaBeouf, although estimates are that the pic will certainly cross the $100 million for the six and a half day opening. Just how much higher is the bigger question.
On Memorial Day, Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" also slipped into theaters the night before its official opening, making an estimated $13 million in ticket sales. It compares Transformers $8.8m to Pirates $13m, so it does indeed look like just the pre-midnight showings are counted as Monday and midnight is towards Tuesday.

67% of what AWE made, if it kept that up, the weekend would be 76 million. Though with it being Monday, not Thursday, and Summer leading to smaller increases. I'd say Transformers is looking like it will be close to the 65 milllion WOTW made for the 3day, maybe a little less.

Not sure what is going on with Sicko. SBD's numbers for it have been lower than BOM's so maybe it improves. AIT dropped more its fourth weekend, but its fifth weekend was more comparable to the calender for this weekend and it only dropped 23%, but that was the day before the 4th. F 9/11 dropped much better too.

I really think that given the bizarre realease date, everyone (both people wanting this to do well and those not) wait a couple of days to see Mon-Fri numbers before declaring it increadibly frontloaded, or going to make 400 million dollars, because at this point, there is no way of knowing just by the Mon, Tue, Wed numbers, because the holiday messes it up!

Well, unlike with Pirates, these 8pm sneaks were on a night when school was out and when many people have the next day off. 8-11pm shows could have definetely absorbed most of the demand on monday.

Ratatouille could make 10 million on both Tuesday and Thursday... the holiday will keep it from that number on Wednesday...

If Ratatouille follows Shrek's daily pattern from 2001 (the last time July 4th was on Wednesday), Ratatouille will have $7.1m on Thursday. It should be higher since Shrek lost theaters against 2 Wednesday openers, and then a 40% Friday increase will put it at over $10m and a $33-35m weekend.

I think films will see increases this year as well, since there is no opener this year on the 4th of July.

That would be an amazing hold if it got to 35mil, I think the best second weekend drop for any Pixar film ever.

It's so hard to compare it to Shrek though, as it did lose theatres, but also because Shrek was over a month old at that point...

an just a note that people might enjoy...
Up here in Canada, a theatre chain called Famous Players has cheap night on Tuesday nights...
They regularly charge 10$ for an adult, but on Tuesday nights they charge $4.20 . Funnily enough, they are still doing it today for Transformers opening day.... my friends all got their tickets this morning, and they paid four dollars and twenty cents for them....
I wonder how dreamworks feels about this

I see the following breakdown for Rataouille: Mon: 7.55m Tues: 9.4m (25% increase) Wed: 11.8m (25% increase) Thurs: 7.1m (40% drop) Fri: 10.3m (45% increase) Sat: 13.4m (30% incrase) Sun: 10.7m (20% drop) 2nd weekend: 34.4m (27% drop) Total after 10 days: 117.3m If that is indeed it's total after 10 days, it would all but guarentee that this passes 200 million total..
