Post Book burning alive and well
An Alabama lawmaker wants to ban all books, fiction and nonfiction, that depict homosexuality as anything other than an abomination.

You get one guess if he's a Republican or a Democrat.

The highlights:

"Our culture, how we know it today, is under attack from every angle," Allen said in a press conference Tuesday.

Allen said that if his bill passes, novels with gay protagonists and college textbooks that suggest homosexuality is natural would have to be removed from library shelves and destroyed.

"I guess we dig a big hole and dump them in and bury them," he said.

"It sounds like Nazi book burning to me," said [Southern Poverty Law Center] spokesman Mark Potok.

When asked about Tennessee Williams' southern classic "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof," Allen said the play probably couldn't be performed by university theater groups.

"Half the books in the library could end up being banned. It's all based on how one interprets the material," [Jaunita Owes, director of the Montgomery City-County Library] said.

Of course this lawmaker is stupid, but I don't find this to be "book burning" or censorship. Does the government have to allow every single book to go into the library? If they told a private library or store that they could not sell certain books, then I would find a censorship problem.

The lawmaker is stupid, but his party allegiance has hardly anything to do with the matter.

It's not as if Democrats never want to ban certain books.

Why is it republicans always have to counterattack with something "democrats do too?"

is there an implication here that there is no democrat against homosexuality??

Is there an implication here that all democrats have the exact way of thinking and all republicans have the exact way of thinking and their parts cannot cross?

no where. I just find it odd how every matter must be tied in with people's political agenda ..... ever considered people being anti-gay just because they are .... and not having anything to do with the fact that theyre republicans or democrats or cats or wooden tables

You used a logical fallacy. Thats what he was referring to.

Great logic. You should take over Maureen Dowd's spot, once she retires from NY Times.

yes i understood that ... my point being ... its almost deliberate to start up a debate on it ... its a cheap pot shot towards people who associate with a certain thing ..... this is about a guy who doesn't like gay people ... not about a guy who doesn't like gay people cause hes republicans.

Technically, it's not book burning. He wants to bury them in a big hole. But I'm sure that's of little comfort to the gay community or anyone who wants to read Cat On A Hot Tin Roof.

But it is, in fact, the very definition of censorship. It would be govt sponsored and mandated. But the issue isn't just the censorship. Obviously the govt has to make some decisions about what to include and not include in public libraries. The question, however, is WHAT they exclude and why and taking that decision-making away from the librarians.

And excluding any and all content becuase it does NOT portray gays negatively is moronic.

Isn't that EXACTLY what you just did, Krem? Your response was, "yeah, but Democrats do it too." That's a non-response response. And it doesn't adresss the issue at all.
