June 2006 Forecast By Michael Bentley 1) Superman Returns
The Man of Steel is back. Gone are Margot Kidder, Gene Hackman, Sidney J. Furie (I guess Alan Smithee wasn't invented yet), and the late Christopher Reeve. Replacing them are Kate Bosworth, Kevin Spacey, Bryan Singer, and Brandon Routh (who?). Director Singer gambled and jumped ship from the lucrative X-Men franchise - something that many mutant fanboys are probably shaking their fists at right now - and took a chance on reviving what was once America's most beloved comic.
It is easy to wonder if the last Superman movie - the absolutely terrible Superman IV: The Quest for Peace - will haunt Superman Returns and scare people away from seeing it, as likely happened to some degree with Batman and Robin on last year's Batman Begins. I tend to suspect that the impact from the negative karma of Superman IV will be negligible. It has been nearly 20 years, compared to just eight for the Caped Crusader. There are a number of factors in its favor: the sizeable built-in audience of comic fans, people curious to see what Singer does with it, and of course it will have the long weekend prior to July 4th with little direct competition. However, though it probably won't matter much (except maybe in the long run) but I can't help but wondering if casting a complete unknown in the title role was a mistake.
Opening weekend prediction: $82 million + $53 million Wed-Thu.
no final projection made, a 5 day of 135 million assures 250 million, cause itll get at the very minimum a 2 multiplier for its 5 day.
Good luck.. Whatever helps you sleep better at Night.. I think Roeper definitely has a legitimate point, don't you??

Given the fact that we live in a very politically correct world nowadays, I don't think SUPERMAN being a Colon Cowboy will be the sole reason this movie takes a bath.. The reason really is that no one cares about this movie or the character, in a world where MARVEL has put out characters that are better appealing, with more complex personalities and are flashier and easier to relate to.. SUPERMAN may be an Iconic character by definition, but that doesn't translate to every teen and kid in the world buying into that.. This character had it's time back in the late 70's and culminating with the Godawful 4th movie in 83 or 84, but also as much as I keep saying this and it keeps being ignored, Christopher Reeve's absence WILL play a part also in the movie's demise.. You have to understand that 95% of the world's population really accepted Reeve as the Man of Steel.. He was PERFECT on all accounts, the right build, the right height and in geenral, the right look and it counted, BACK THEN.. Now, in the Present, he's gone and too many of folks reared on Reeve and Donner's version of SUPERMAN, so is this..

BKB if you think all that, then why would you put Superman Returns at over 200m? Since that would put it in the same league as X-Men, if Marvel comic flicks have more appeal then why would Superman do as good as X-Men?

Cause I'm being generous with that prediction and if I had said that I REALLY feel that SR will do LXG numbers, you all would've thought I was crazy.. Actually I said 201 Million but in the end, even if the movie does that, it's still extremely disappointing and would be deemed a Bomb when the damn thing cost supposedly 275 Million to make plus however much $$$ WB ponied up for the shi**y Marketing there doing..

I think POTC2 will be big, but I doubt it can get in the 450m range or near it. Yet no one protests to BJ or anyone predicting 450m+ for POTC2 even when they have no evidence to support them aside from Shrek 2.

SPIDERMAN.. SPIDERMAN is on all accounts, today's SUPERMAN which is why the moviegoers love these films and why they've made so much $$$.. By the way, by any chance would you happen to be the poster "Red Beard" over at RT would ya ??? Seems like both of you have such a passion for anything that is SUPERMAN that it sort of seemed coincidental..

Shrek 2 is the ultimate evidence

excel:maybe you should tell people to stop saying this film has no awareness then.
Nice try, excel. Little boys have been sporting Superman Underoos continuously for decades, whether there was a movie coming out or not.
In fact, Superman's marketing is a distinct disadvantage. Usually when people see new stuff, they know there's a movie coming out. But there's so much Superman to begin with, you don't know if it's because of a movie, or because Wal-mart decided to re-do the existing Superman line. I don't think the Underoos are contributing much to awareness.

The kids auidence will really help SR I think, something BB lacked.
Magnus. you know how people keep on making fun of how you grasp at little things you see to justify your high prediction? Why do you keep on feeding them with comments like that?

Excel is grasping at little things. The closer SR gets to release, the more Magnus seems to be making sense. I think the adverts we see on TV thus far are a good indication as to where the film is going to be marketed. So far, it's been almost predominently at children (the little marketing we've seen). We all know that SR's BO will be amde or broken on children and whether they will be marketed too. If it happens, it will boost SR's BO significantly.

I just watched a commercial in Nickelodeon today. A Superman suit that could be nflated and they show this kid bending metal bars made of tootsie roll and throw boxes made of tissue. That's what I call marketing.

Actually I wasn't being sarcastic. I was just saying that the commercial was stupid. I have no doubt whatsoever that kids fall for that kind of stupid commercial.

Why is there so many posters? Isn't that like the 6th one? They've released 3-4 in the last 3-4 days.

heres the captn crnuch breakdown i just saw it-its so stupid.
2 kids walk outside a huge daily planet like building in a city. a voiceover says lex luthors taken control of the city.
a cartoon ship crashes into the street as the little boy says "this looks like a job for superman!" n captn crunch says "or...superman crunch! a great part of this good breakfast!-hop on board!" the kids become cartoons n the girl sys "what are we gonna do fly?" n captain crunch says "of course" nt throws them to jet packs n they fly up to th rooftop to see the delicious looking cereal being poored into a bowl. they become human again n eat it and we cut to the huge s and it says promoting superman returns in theaters june 30th.
kids will totally dig this.
