On Stranger Tides is the worst film in the franchise by just about every measure. And yet, weren't you quoted as saying that the movie isn't near as bad as the critics are making it out to be??? That you actually enjoyed this???

I saw it (for free, praise Xenu) in a packed house of (initially) super excited people (myself excluded obv). I've never heard such a silent crowd in my life. You'd have thought we were watching The Pianist. Though, in some sense, I suppose we were.

No one cares about this movie anyway. What IS important is that there was a teaser for The Muppets in front of the movie, but I can't find it online! wtf

Did anyone else find Barbossa uglier than usual in this one? He was almost hard to look at.

Unsurprisingly, I loved it. Moreso than I was expecting to, really.
Nobody has mentioned the scene after the end credits, did anyone else stay for it?

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
The latest Pirates of the Caribbean is the worst one yet. It isn't downright awful, but it feels too long (despite it being the shortest of the films) and there is less of the charm in this then the other three films. Johnny Depp is fine as Captain Jack again and so is Geoffrey Rush. However, everyone else don't stand out. Penelope Cruz seems like a waste here as we never figure out how we are to interpret her character. Ian McShane is a mediocre Blackbeard and his reasoning to be in the film is boring. The first half drags quite a bit doing a bit more backstory than need be. The second half starts to hint at some of the charm the other films had, but it doesn't give enough to save the film. The series should be fine with more standalone films, hopefully they are just a little bit better than this one. **

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
The scene after the credits is a brief bit where Angelica finds the Jack voodoo doll as it washes ashore on the island.
Anyways, I really liked it. It was fun. But considering the first three hold a very special place in my heart and I thought At World's End was AMAZING and a perfect conclusion to this franchise, I was disappointed. I missed Will and Elizabeth and the mermaid-clergyman love story was so underdeveloped and a terrible substitute.
It's late so I'll expand on this later - I'd probably give it a B+.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
It's nothing terrible, nothing great either though. It's just sort of there.
It's obvious DMC and AWE had a lot more attention to detail and energy on its scenes. But I think the plot, pacing, script, etc. is better in this one. So it balances out. I'll say On Stranger Tides is narrowly the 2nd best of the series over DMC and AWE is by far the worst.
I think the problem with the last 3 films is they've botched the straight man plot. The truth about movies like this is it's a cloak and dagger show. You come out of Pirates 1 thinking Sparrow/Barbosa make the film and Bloom/Knightley drag it down. But the straight men carry the plot and make the stakes. You need the main character to be a Pirates 1 Bloom, not Sparrow - Sparrow needs to be the secondary color guy. There's not as much stakes when it's just Sparrow and his female version Angelica, they're both kind of scandolous caricatures, which sounds fine on the surface but it doesn't work fully. Pirates 2 and 3 tried to keep the Bloom Knightley thing going but they just messed it up. I think making Knightley a Pirate was a big mistake there. Pirates 4 just has that religious guy mermaid subplot which is hilariously shallow

By the way, what's preventing Bloom from pulling a Vin Diesel and just returning to the series in the next few? The guy's career is dead like Blackbeard. I'm predicting Bloom comes back. I would.

Nobody has mentioned the scene after the end credits, did anyone else stay for it? Totally with ya! I loved it. Seen it twice so far (both times in 2D), wanna go see it at least once in 3D and maybe a time or two more in 2D. I totally didn't miss Will or Elizabeth, though I did feel the absence of all our favorite pirates. However, the way things are described concerning the Black Pearl's condition, I have a feeling all those pirates could be back for the next film. Far as I've heard/read, the actors would've been in it if they'd been asked back. LOVED seeing both Teddy Groves and Gillette, not particularly happy with where they ended up... If Orlando Bloom was to EVER return to the Pirates franchise, I would only want it to be for him to bring Norrington back from World's End. Seriously. I MISS NORRY SO MUCH. I adored Scrum, and didn't mind the whole Phillip/Syrena thing. I'd love it if those two were to come back, that Phillip came back as a merman. I'm interested in finding out more about Syrena's morphing abilities. Loved the references to the ride, such a Ponce de Leon. That was great. Anyway, LOVED the movie, and I can't wait 'til Johnny decides there's been enough time and wants to start on the fifth. I'm just wary about the idea that our wonderful writing team has split for the fifth; I love Rossio, but I have to wonder how much of the previous films have been his work and how much of it has been Ted Elliott's. Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
I had no intention of seeing this. The first was really good, but the second sucked. I skipped the third, and would have done the same with this if it weren't the second movie of a drive-in double feature. To my surprise it wasn't that bad. Definitely better than the second one. I thought the mermaid attack scene was cool.

I had put this off assuming it sucked but it was very good. Better than 2 and 3 easily and about as good as Pirates 1.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
Finally saw it. I think it's the best of the sequels as it's breezy and fun. Still the overall payoff is kind of meh. Blackbeard and Penelope Cruz are fun additions, but the preacher and the anorexic mermaid are painfully bad. But the mermaids, action, and characters are fun. They just need a decent story and better main characters to bring the series back.

Because I'm not a masochist. On Stranger Tides is boring. It's reheated Pirates -- there's literally nothing in it that wasn't done better in one of the other three films.

That is absolutely right on. For the amount of heat that At World's End got (some of it very well-deserved, some less so), it certainly looks better now compared to the fourth movie.

Re: Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
I don't know why I keep putting myself through the displeasure of watching these movies. Oh yeah, I remember, I'm on a Johnny Depp filmography quest! In this quest I've come upon many a treasure, ay! But this was more akin to cubic zirconia than anything valuable. The film, as with the rest, are made for kids. They're just really bad adventures too; shot 80% in the dark while the swashbuckling farce is hidden and the jokes are infantile. It's all the same shit, but on a different day.
It's without Mackenzie Crook, which was the only reason to watch the other three. Depp is ok, better than in At World's End and Dead Man's Chest. Nobody dies in this movie, and for a pirate movie, that's lame - it's soppy especially with the mermaids. Cruz is kind of really bad in this too, with the only highlight being Geoffrey Rush again - he's the quintessential pirate in voice and appearance. This is the second best Pirates movie behind the original. But the whole franchise pales in comparison to more superior seafaring pictures like Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World, Hook and Cutthroat Island. I guess I'm not 12 years old anymore, hence..

I mildly liked it in theaters, tried watching it at home and failed miserably. It truly feels much much longer than it actually is and nothing exciting happens in the entire running time. One of the bigger disapointments from the last few years.
