Voters Begin Casting Early Ballots in Florida

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- With memories of 2000 and the state's bitter fight over ballots still fresh, Floridians began casting votes Monday and within an hour problems cropped up.

In Palm Beach County, the center of the madness during the recount four years ago, a Democratic state legislator said she wasn't given a complete absentee ballot when she asked to opt for paper instead of the electronic touch-screen machines. And in Orange County, the touch-screen system briefly crashed, paralyzing voting in Orlando and its immediate suburbs.

A steady flow had turned out Monday morning at more than a dozen sites in Palm Beach County. Patrick Flanagan, who went to the county's election headquarters to cast his ballot, said he voted early because he wanted to avoid the long lines expected on Election Day. He said he's voted on the touch-screen machines once before, and both times have gone "very smoothly."

"I'm a computer-phobe, and it seemed easy enough to me," said Flanagan, who added that he had no concerns about his vote being counted.

There has been a lot of trouble lately analyzing in which direction the FL voters will swing. This has mainly been due to the relocation of so many, from certain socio-politic classes due to the four hurricanes. Many people no longer are living in the state and/or do not have a permanent address. I am wondering about people who left the state to stay with relatives, etc, and if there wil be an exceptionally high # of mail-in votes this election. We all know what a party Florida had with mail-in votes last election. :?
But it does change the anticipated demographic of mail-in voters, which is usually military and republican in majority.

Is there any way people know who is leading in early voting?

Whoopsies. I created a thread on the voters without looking in here. Duhhh. Stupid me. Thanks torri.

Anyway, can't say I am suprised with the Florida voting issue. Is anyone, really?

Hehe. Clever way to get swing voters in Pa. Good job. :P

Man Robs Bank Wearing George W. Bush Mask
Pa. cops hunting presidential imitator in swing state stickup
OCTOBER 18--Police in the battleground state of Pennsylvania are looking for a man who robbed a bank Thursday night wearing a George W. Bush mask. The holdup man, who did not flash a weapon, demanded the money from a teller at a Commerce Bank near York. As seen in the below bank surveillance photos--provided to TSG by the Northern York County Regional Police--the robber wore gloves, a ski hat, and a fixed grin. A police spokesman would not say how much the Dubya doppelganger got away with.

from the gun.

I think it's easy to say...

That, while KJ himself might be a conservative, the majority of the mods support...

THE SECOND COMING OF J.F.K.

Go Kerry!

bah! In my alternate universe, everybody is a nazi republican! But anyway, I think Bush will win. Its in the bag. And to be honest, I wish we could have someone better than him. Kerry is such a stronger canidate. If only I could believe him.... the democrats always disappoint me. That, and I disagree with half of what he says . But lets face it, he is much smarter, and much more capable. There are only so many canidates that can reach a high position. I think we should respect all of them. Whether bush is or isn't your sort of thing, you can't be hatin! ;)

Also, anyone see the latest *graphic* on the O'Reilly case? Whoa. Let me pull a Gatsu, and ask, does this have any effect on the sell of goat cheese? But really, some disturbing stuff in the report. He teased her about masturbation and bondage fantasies? *shivers* I mean, the thought of O'Reilly liking the whip is a little gross. Anyway, if anyone is interested:

I know, its like incumbent Ryan was over in Illinois. Frankly, I don;t understand how the Republicans still manage to promote themselves as being the "moral" guys? I don't even know how the hell "morality" is still a playing card considering....

Do I think it will effect Bush's approval rating? No, its pretty much not related. It didn't affect bush when Linbaugh got into trouble either. I don't really associate the two, and I don't think anyone else does either.

I have to do my republican duty and say Mr. O says he is an independent. (Fine fine, I admit it, we all know he is a Bush groupie!). The whole moral Republicans ticket is stupid, imo. I wish both sides would stop using it, along with personal attacks, and just stick to the issues. Not a testimony 25 years ago. Not some discharge papers. How about - I know, this is such a crazy thought - getting our country back on the right track? Its going to take more than one man, Bush or Kerry, to do that. I am doubtful either of them can fix the problems at hand.

Wow Zach, I agree with everything in that post. *Hell Freezes Over*

You bring up some excellent issues which really need to be addressed in the general direction campaigns in many elections, including this one, have been heading. I have grossly large concerns about the Kerry "Electability" approach AND the Bush "Experience" stump.

Poll Shows Tie; Concerns Cited on Both Rivals

Two weeks before Election Day, voters hold a sharply critical view of President Bush's record in office, but they have strong reservations about Senator John Kerry, leaving the race in a tie, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News Poll.

Mr. Bush's job approval rating is at 44 percent, a dangerously low number for an incumbent president, and one of the lowest of his tenure. A majority of voters said that they disapproved of the way Mr. Bush had managed the economy and the war in Iraq, and - echoing a refrain of Mr. Kerry's - that his tax cuts had favored the wealthy. Voters said that Mr. Kerry would do a better job of preserving Social Security, creating jobs and ending the war in Iraq.

But a majority of Americans continue to see Mr. Kerry as an untrustworthy politician who will say what he thinks people want to hear. More than half of respondents said they considered him liberal, reflecting a dominant line of attack by Mr. Bush this fall.

The poll found the two candidates each drawing 46 percent of all registered voters in a head-to-head race. Among likely voters in a two-way race, Mr. Bush has 47 percent, with 46 percent for Mr. Kerry.

44% for an incumbent? Anyone know what Papa Bush's approval rating was during his second term run? This is getting interesting in light of the tax cut weapons manufacturers just got. I will post the article in a minute...

Relief Agency Official Is Kidnapped in Baghdad

BAGHDAD, Iraq, Oct. 19 — The British-born director of Care International in Iraq was kidnapped today as she drove to her office, and hours later appeared on a televised videotape made by her abductors.

Margaret Hassan, who maintains dual nationality, was pulled from her car by a group of men, who also beat her driver and guard with their rifle butts, her co-workers said...

Ms. Hassan married an Iraqi and has lived in Iraq for more than 30 years. She began working for Care in 1991 or 1992, soon after the first Gulf War ended, but she has been involved in humanitarian relief for 25 years. She is the director of the Baghdad office.

"She has been there three decades, over half her life, and considered herself to be more of an Iraqi national," said Kate Bulbulian, the charity's spokeswoman in London. "That is what her life is."

Ms. Hassan, who speaks fluent Arabic, spoke out against the economic sanctions imposed on Iraq following the first Gulf War in 1991, and against the war that began in 2003. In both cases, she said, ordinary Iraqis would suffer greatly...

British Prime Minister Tony Blair said today that British troops would be deployed north, to Iraq's more troubled and dangerous areas, only if it makes good military sense. The possibility that Britain may position troops in volatile areas, away from Basra, the British stronghold in the south, has raised concerns among lawmakers here and led to charges that Mr. Blair is seeking to lift President Bush's re-election bid...

I just really wonder what is going to happen in the next month. I don't think anything done at this point with 3 weeks left is really going to affect the situation enough to make anyone feel more secure. So unlike this article, I really don't think that's the logic. Still, some very rash actions could take place between now and Nov. 2nd, and this election is pretty much, still, ALL about Iraq and/or National Security. So is the election really in foreign hands in a sense?

*enters for daily GO BUSH! chant*

Looks like Bush has a very slight lead over Kerry now. Some have him tied (NY times), others have him in a double digit lead (Time, or ws it Gallop?). Either way, looks like the average has Bush outside the margin of error by about a point. Ugh. I see 2000 all over, really. :x

Yes. Half his state now lives in other states thanks to Charlie, Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne.

That's going to be mighty tricky.

4 more years?

Heh, have you seen some of the old people around here? They have cities for them. Sun City Center is ten miles south of me. 50,000 old people ONLY. Scary man. They can drive golf carts on the roads. Eeek.

Knowing them, im sure one old guy will take too many viagras and his weewee will cast his ballot for him when he bumps into the touch screen, fumbling for his glasses or something. The possibilites are endless, my friend.

Yup. The people ruined by Charley are back to normal, as with Francis I suspect. Ivan- not quite yet. Jeanne - give it a few weeks. Should be fine come election. But then again, they have been so slow getting things back to normal. Crap is still all over the medians. And they jsut opened up our main land bridge the other day after it washed out a month ago in Frances! Oh, ya, and a good number of folk left all together! A few thousand probably.

More on turning out the Vote. I remember reading an article that the nation was expecting 1 million new registered voters this year. That feels like a very paltry sum in a nation of 300+ million, but then I realize

1. That just new registered voters. I'm sure also previously registered voters that just haven't bothered voting in previous elections will also turn out Nov. 2.

2. In a nation with sub-50% turnout...even 1 million is a big deal. And we need all the help we can get.

http://www.nytimes.com/2004/10/20/politics/campaign/20vote.html?hp&ex=1098331200&en=9e483e9e11dd693a&ei=5094&partner=homepage wrote:
Interest Groups Mounting Costly Push to Get Out Vote

n a presidential race whose outcome is expected to hang on turnout at the polls, an army of interest groups is pumping at least $350 million into get-out-the-vote campaigns that are rewriting the tactics of elections.

The efforts are part of the most expensive voter-drive ground war in history. It includes the major parties and their allies, the independent but partisan groups known as 527's, whose attack advertisements have played a big role in both President Bush's and Senator John Kerry's campaigns.

And for the first time in a national campaign, it includes hundreds of civic organizations and deep-pocketed business interests.

These groups, including the United States Chamber of Commerce and coalitions of charities, are using millions of dollars from donors that the groups are not required to identify. And though the groups are nonpartisan, some emphasize issues identified with one candidate or the other.

The efforts include door-to-door drives, mass e-mailings and telephone campaigns intended for select groups of voters. And the onslaught has been heaviest in the states that are still up for grabs.

In Florida, for example, unions and civil rights groups are coordinating their efforts, dividing up the state by precinct to reach as many voters as they can. But the fervor has even reached Baghdad, where a Republican lobbyist is trying to help an estimated 100,000 employees of American contractors in the Persian Gulf vote in time to be counted...

It doesnt matter

I cant tell you who will win. But I can tell you this:

by January 20th when the Pres is sworn in.

Gas will still be $2.50/per gal
You will still pay the same amount of taxes or more
We will still have many, many troops in Iraq
More jobs will have been outsourced to Bangalore
Healthcare costs will have risen
Social Security will still be an empty bank account

The French will still be a country of assholes.

I saw the perfect Kerry Bumper Sticker:

JOHN KERRY HE'LL DO
