The freedom to sail the seas and not be hunted. That's more like it.
I didn't have issues with them fighting for their survival, it was just fucking ridiculous how they used the triumphant Bruckheimer music to make it all seem so fucking noble.
Maybe I wouldn't have minded if these pirates actually had some sort of goal in mind. But the film is just endless build ups with no resolution. We go through all this nonsense about Calypso and how important of a sea god she is and how the pirates somehow condemned her to live in human form. So they finally release her, she becomes 70 feet high, turns into crabs, and than completely dissapears from the story? Why the hell did they even need her in there? The same shit applies with Chow-Yun-Fat, the 9 of 8, and most any other aspect of the "plot."

Indeed that whole plot strand was a complete waste.

Well I think she made that Cyclone so the two main ships would fight while all the other Pirates and Armada did nothing. But I agree, her character was a waste.

Thats another thing which made me groan. They set up for a massive sea battle with multiple ships and instead the create the oceanic version of a plughole and just throw 2 ships in there leaving everybody else out.
Such a wasted opportunity. Indeed if they'd had balls they could have had a Wild Bunch ending with the Pirates bowing out in a blaze of glory and have it stand as the symbolic end of an era. But of course that would deflect from Pirates 4: The Quest to Steal your Wallet.

The huge build up of a major battle only actually involving a one on one fight is hardly anything new in three-quel land. It just makes me wonder why they even needed to bother having the whole pirate convention if the next scene only involved two more ships blowing up the main villian.

They teased me with a slight redemption for the movie and then ripped it away

One of the main reasons why this was such a bloated mess is because the screenwriters were completely deluded into thinking DMC was flawless and they just needed an even longer version
This quote from this months Total Film is very telling I think
Terry Russio wrote: There was very little useful or insightful criticism of Dead Mans Chest, But then again there was equally little useful and insightful analysis of Curse of the Black Pearl. And then again, there is not much good film criticism out there for any film
No wonder he screwed up this film so badly if his head is that far up his own arse.

I'm just saying. I'm not saying that they're wrong, most of them are right.
But almost everything they say does not help in any way shape or form.
And unlike BKB, most people AGREE with me about PotC3

Well of course what critics have to say isn't going to help anything, they critique films after they've already been released. Or is there some sort of meaning behind your posts that I'm not picking up on?
And Gulli, based on what Megatron (his true identity explains a LOT) has been saying, we reallllly don't need any help on this one.

Barricade wrote: Let's break this film down:
Plot: It's confusing, misguided, and stupid. I love how the marketing said that "every secret will be revelaved" and after 3 hours, they still weren't able to live up to that promise. To many open-questions, and too many ridiclous answers to questions that probably should have never been questioend in the first place.
Action: Aside from Jack fighting Davey Jones, the action in this wasn't that great. It was too chaotic. It wasn't fun to watch at all.
Comedy: Hardly was there. There were little lines here and there that may have made me chuckle a bit, but that's it. The funniest part in the whole movie is at the end with Jack and the two women, and I was so tired by that time that I didn't even care about the movie anymore
"Fun": Where the #### was it? Seriously. What fun? The most fun this film had is once again that scene between Jack and the two women(a scene which I think really captured the magic of the first one). It's 2.75 hours long, and after about one hour, you're already bored.
The film is just a mess of wasted potential, very simliar to SM3. The only thing this has over SM3 is that it had better visuals and its comedy was intentional and not unintentional like SM3. Plus it had better dialouge.
Sorry but I don't buy into the theory that moviegoers see a movie like SM3 for the dialogue.. That's retarded.. That's a copout and merely a reason to complain about the movie..

felt no different than about Dead Man's Chest: disappointed. Just too much going on, and the running time is too much. Until Sparrow entered the picture(about 30 minutes in), the film was dull as dishwater, but it thankfully improves towards the end with an excellent climatic battle(although there are a few flaws along the way during this section of the film as well). Depp provides quite a few zingers here and there, but it has grown thin. Keira Knightley continues to make Elizabeth an endearing character. Orlando Bloom is lifeless and has apparently become bored of this series(considering it's the only thing keeping his career afloat....). Geoffrey Rush is the one doing most of the work, making up for his absence in part two(while also reminding us why he was so memorable in the first). Bill Nighy is less threatening this time, while Jack Davenport, Naomie Harris, and Tom Hollander are given little to nothing to do for most of their screen time. Chow Yun-Fat and Keith Richards are underused. Solid special effects work, but the uneven pacing and the overstuffed script sink this sadly sinking franchise. C+
