I based that on a much stronger Sunday (and lower Sat, ergo the $58m), but also for some reason a much, MUCH better Monday drop. I made that prediction without realizing that SM1 had dropped 75% on its second Monday this week, and that in general, this week tends to register big drops for big films.


But really, I just suck.

This film sucks.

Yes the film does suck. Heck, it made me look like an idiot today. I thought I was low-balling its Monday gross by predicting $4.75 million and that turned out to be $1.16 million higher than it actually made.

Spider-Man 3 needs just $100.9m more to beat the original Star Wars trilogy. And it could fall short at this point.

Well, not much to say, really. It keeps on keeping on, at a lower rate than the big 4. Spider-Man 1 will power ahead this weekend, and will gain $15m on SM3. Spider-Man 1, btw, holds the record for biggest third weekend, with $45m. It's the only film to make more than $40m in its third weekend. For that matter, it's the only film with a $40m beyond the second weekend (past day 12).

We should get a good indication of where it's heading Tuesday, sort of like with Spider-Man 3.

Well, don't forget the Canadian holiday, which is going to mess with the Monday and Tuesday figures. Films drop much less on this Monday, and much more on the Tuesday. If Shrek 3 drops 60-65% Mon and 20-30% Tuesday, that's good. Shrek 2 immediately stabilized on Wed and Thu. If Shrek 3 doesn't, then we might have something, esp. since it won't get any respite come next weekend.

Granted that the film should have been at around $300-320m now, if it had managed good legs, its performance this weekend was not all that bad. All things considered, in fact, it was rather decent.

Shrek 3 will probably make around $6m in the next two days, so it will be at around $151m. Worse for Shrek 3, Shrek 2 had $164.7m in the bag before MMDWknd. There is now absolutely no way that Shrek 3 will come anywhere near Shrek 2.
