And it was the last of the big films to be released. This is ALWAYS an advantage. If it wass released in MAY, it wouldn't have performed like it did.

The above lists show what an uninteresting lacklustre summer it was (bar POTC2's performance). Quality wise it wasnt too hot either.

Corpse, May 2006 sucked hard, except for X3. My guess is POTC2 would have done far more damage to X3 than the other way around. And I'm pretty sure it would still have been a $400m+ hit. The first Pirates film was among the most well received big films this decade; when you get to that point, the competition really doesn't matter.






I wholeheartedly agree. Give me another 2002. Remember how great that one was? Spidey, AOTC, Signs, and so much else. And 1999. That was fantastic.


Worst Second Weekend Drops


Sheesh, Jailbait, horrible. But it was a very small film. It dropped from like $2,860 to $108. X3 had the biggest drop among major films.

Let's say we swapped X3 and DMC's release dates.

DMC would have ruled June obviously, and fought with Cars for the weekend number 1 when Cars opened. It's weekdays wouldnt have been as good for a few weeks because of School, and would then have Superman Returns and X3 to contend with back to back. 400 would have been a big challenge.

With it's July 7th release, it had no-school weekdays immediantly, and had nothing to contend with the rest of the summer.

Well, there is really no way that Disney would have opened DMC and Cars that close to each other. In fact, I have a feeling that Cars (in addition to X3) had something to do with DMC not opening Memorial Day weekend. That, and the fact that a late summer opening worked so well for the first film.

Great stuff there Box. It would be good to see 04 and 01 - both strong summers aswell as 96 and 98. I doubt you could go back to 94 - one of the all time great summers - but if you can then great.

Also is it possible to post say the Top 50 highest grossing films adjusted for inflation for each year since the 90s?? Perhaps later on. Would be good to compare to what we expect from 2007.

Yes 1999 was amazing. May had Star Wars and The Mummy, June had few films but many hits - Austin Powers, Big Daddy, Tarzan and then the second half surprised us with American Pie, The Blair Witch and Sixth Sense. Julia Roberts had two $100m grossers in the one summer and The Sixth Sense had the best run of any summer film since Forrest Gump. What is funny is that Sixth Sense was hastily added to the August schedule just a few weeks earlier. Can you imagine a film being slotted in a week after Rush Hour 3 in late July and then going onto make $300m!!!??

I can go back to 1994.





Their total grosses, yeah, that can be done. It's much harder to give the top 50 grosses for each summer, though, because of the amount of time it'd take. Let me see what I can do.



The Blair Witch Project and Sixth Sense really distinguished 1999. Tarzan did as well as was expected of it as the animation film, and better considering the Disney films that preceded it. The Phantom Menace was supposed to be the big blockbuster. The Mummy, I would say, was a pleasant surprise just like Deep Impact was. But Sixth Sense, man oh man. In a way, Signs did a repeat in 2002, giving us a strong August film.
