 Gutsy Predictions for '05
Every now and then people will throw caution to the wind and predict that some movie will be a huge bomb or a huge hit and no one will expect it. Often times they're wrong, but every now and then they nail it. I know that I've been in both positions multiple times, and 2005 will probably be no exception. It's always fun to look at the guesses you made months before and laugh about nailing them or being way off, so why not try. Here's some of mine, and you should list some of yours too!
- Boogeyman will be a surprisingly big hit (just see how much scarier the international trailer is then the domestic one), and open above 20 million.
- White Noise will have AWFUL word of mouth when people realize it's more like Dragonfly then The Ring, and have a multiplier under 2.3
- Elektra will do Underworld numbers at best.
- Kingdom of Heaven will have a soft opening weekend in the 30s, but have fantastic legs for a summer blockbuster
- xXx 2 will be a huge hit, making 2 Fast 2 Furious numbers
- Hitch will open above 40 million.
- The Pacifier will at worst make 30 million less then Robots.
- The Ring Two will crush Ice Age's March opening weekend record with more then 65 million.
- Sahara will bomb
- War of the Worlds will beat Star Wars: Episode Three by at least 40 million.
- Sin City will make 10 million more opening weekend then The Weather Man.
- The Amittyville Horror will continue the trend of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Dawn of the Dead by opening above 20 million.
- Unleashed will be Jet Li's biggest movie yet, and if Morgan Freeman wins Best Supporting Actor it could open above 30 million.
- Kicking and Screaming won't beat Dodgeball numbers.
That's it for now, I'll be adding more later.

So, on the War of the Worlds front, guess you guys didn't notice the gross on the last Spielberg/Cruise team-up?

Yeah but War of the Worlds looks bigger. If they do it right, this could be the movie of the year, I'm sure.

King Kong wont make over 200 million
Memoirs of Geisha will make more than Chicago's number
Elektra will open under 20 million
Memoirs of Geisha and The New World will garner the most nominations next year when oscar season starts
Disney will drop the ball on Chronicles of Narnia by having its mystical creatures do cartwheels and sing "its a small world after all"
House of Wax will bomb because of Paris Hilton

My only gutsy prediction is that Elektra will open to $35+ million, but have terrible legs, regrettably forcing it to settle with less than $100 million, or just barely over it. My official prediction is 25 million, but I got the feeling it could be big, but extremely frontloaded.

Let us see,
The previous SW movie made 310 mil.
The previous Batman movie made 107 mil.
Batman would be lucky if it passes even Batman Forever's total.

I do not think it's a good idea comparing Batman & Robin with Begins.

-Star Wars Episode 3 won't pass 275 million (Empire Strikes Back, the darkest of the first 3, grossed a lot lower than the other two)
-Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire won't pass the Incredibles
-The Pacifier will have a Cheaper by the Dozen like run
-A family movie will be #1 of the year
-Of the 6 Dark films (Star Wars Ep 3, Batman Begins, King Kong, War of the Worlds, Harry Potter 4, Willy Wonky), not one will pass 300 million, only one will pass 250 million, and just 3 will pass 200 million.

Then, it will remarkably jump 1,000%, regain the top spot, and go on to make $850 million domestically, $1.6 billion internationally, and a grand worldwide total of $2.45 billion dollars, holding that spot until The Matrix 4 releases in 2010.

The Ring Two will attain the title of highest opening weekend for a horror movie, surpassing Hannibal and Signs.(If you can call those horror).
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will fall 60%+ in it's second weekend.
HP4 will end the trend of the decline in the series by surpassing both Azkaban and Chamber's grosses.
Constantine will not pass 80 million domestically.
Monster-In-Law will make over 30 million opening weekend(opens on the first weekend in May) and go on to gross over 100 million domestically.

Yeah but unfortunately, it will be compared, especially by the average moviegoer who are not hardcore Batman comic book nerds... As for WAR OF THE WORLDS Beating out the last and final Star Wars movie??? Not a chance and please, don't start lumping the rise of Darth Vader in with Goddamn Neo and the Matrix Sequels and how they performed.. For heaven sakes, that is apples and oranges folks...

Yeah seriously! The Matrix sequels had huge levels of hype before they were released, with lines weeks before they came out, but ultimately dissapointed, what with the campy CGI and wooden characters. With diminishing returns and many people wondering what happened to the original movie, there's no relationship to Star Wars whatsoever!

Folks, I'm not trying to knock your predictions here, I'm really not, BUT, Think about what your saying regarding a movie like Star Wars, regardless of what Episode it is, having trouble passing 200 Million when movies like this gross a 100 Million in 5 days or less with no problem.. Too many of you are downplaying this bullshit about how the movie will be too dark for kids and George said this, and George said that, and George said that since it's the darkest of the 3 that it won't gross as much cause the guy's going to say that so he doesn't come across sound too cocky and confident over it knowing it will.. EPISODE III is going to make a boatload of $$$ regardless of what internet nitpicky film experts thought about the last 2 or not.. People say: "Well, it'll be too Dark for Kids and won't make as much".. Are these the same kids that can sit through violent dark images of war and beheadings and limbs being lopped off in the LOTR Trilogy but can't handle a goddamn Star Wars movie of the same intensity??? Kids are desensitized to this stuff folks and if it isn't dark enough?? They'll bitch and slam Lucas til he's dead over it for not making it dark enough and if it's too dark?? Then they'll slam him anyway for that so in essence no matter how hard George Lucas tries to please the fans and make it more adult and dark and grownup for them, they'll still never be pleased cause there spoiled fucking rotten.. Sorry about the rant but I see this theory all the time and it makes no damn sense.. Carry on folks..

The Matrix movies weren't meant to be stupid sequels Moviedude.. Star Wars was and 95% of moviegoers who were in line back in 1999 for EPISODE I thought they were going to see Darth Vader and a complete carbon copy of the Old Trilogy and didn't.. EPISODE III will be the REAL EPISODE I, What everyone wanted EPISODE I to be and wasn't.. Again, you can't lump 2 shitty Matrix movies in with a more popular franchise like SW regardless of what once again, hardcore internet film experts thought about the last 2 or not.. It's still gonna be the King of the Box Office this summer based on the closer connection to EPISODE IV..
