The size of this thing is Incredible.. I'd hate to run into something like that unless I had a damn bazooka or something..

i still don't understand how u can tell how big the snake is from the pic, much less the size of its head...

the only thing i can make out in the whole pic is the snake itself, everything else is kinda blurry....

I'm basing this on actually sitting inside of the helicopter, which I've flown in one before back in 1996 when I went to Hawaii for a couple of weeks and I can look at that pic long enough and see the ground with the snake on it and judge the girth of it and tha ccuracy of the pic.. It's real alright and a very rare thing to see indeed..

Yes, but how can you base the size of the snake on it?

I dont think it was totally based on the pic. If you read the pilots account of it, he says that he hovered down to take a closer look, but the snake raised itself about 10 feet in the air, maybe looking to attack the 'copter.

Anyways, there is a 49ft snake in captivity - in Java, Indonesia. Apparently it eats 3/4 dogs a month. It weighs about 1000 pounds.

49-FOOT DOG-EATING SNAKE MAY BE THE WORLD'S BIGGEST

JAKARTA, Indonesia - Indonesian villagers claim to have captured a python that is almost 49 feet long and weighs nearly 990 pounds, a local official said. If confirmed, it would be the largest snake ever kept in captivity. Hundreds of people have flocked to see the snake at a primitive zoo in Curugsewu village on the country's main island of Java.

Local government official Rachmat said the reticulated python measured 48 feet 8 inches and weighed in at 983 pounds. The Guinness Book of World Records lists the longest ever captured snake to be 32 feet. The heaviest -- a Burmese Python kept in Gurnee, Ill. -- weighs 402 pounds, the book said on its Web site. The Indonesian newspaper Republika said the snake, which was caught last year but only recently put on public display, eats three or four dogs a month.

I am asking because I read the same story with the same photo on many other websites a while ago and they all stated that the snake was well over 40 feet.

That particular snake is only 21 feet.. YES, That is true and is not 49 feet.. The apparently sent folks from National Geographics over there to confirm the claim and it wasn't even close to what they said it was and the guy that claimed it was 49 feet looked like a complete goofball after it was debunked.. I mean come on fokks.. Just look at that photo above and you can tell that snake is not 49 feet long... Understand that a 49 or 50 foot snake is going to be and look much like the pic I posted in the opening of this thread... It would be the size girth wise as a large oil drum, not what you see above.. In any event, I will provide the link of that later tonight after I'm through celebrating Christmas with my folks..

A Belgian chopper pilot called Remy Van Lierde took the photo (pictured left) during a patrol over the Republic of Congo in 1959. The snake he witnessed has been estimated to be anywhere from around 40-50 feet long. It was possible to estimate the size of the snake because of the many features on the ground in the images taken.
It was described by the pilot as a dark shade of brown and green with a white coloured belly. The jaws were of triangular shape. The pilot claimed the head was a massive 3 feet wide adding that as he cautiously moved in lower for a closer inspection the snake raised itself in the air as high as maybe 10 feet, looking like it may attack the helicopter.

Here is the link debunking this 49 foot snake which turned out to be either 21 foot or 28 foot.. Either way you want to look at it, that's a considerable difference in size to what they claimed was 49 feet and what's 21 or 28 foot..
