Post I am so out of touch with my own kind.
Why is it that the youth of the world have to talk this way? Everytime someone says something is "The Shit", I figure it's pretty bad. Turns out the shit is good? I never considered shit being good. I think it's better when there isn't any. And bling bling... first time I heard that, I thought it was a little fuzzy animal. And I still haven't figured out what it means when something is "ill". I'm about five years behind, as I found myself uttering "beyotch" the other day, but I know that word is quite the old one. So, is it just me that is behind in my own times? Can someone tell me what all this means? I still don't get what the heck "fo shizzle" means. So scared.

Heh. The first time someone asked me if I was "baked" in highschool I'm pretty damn happy I cautiously answered no because I had no idea what it meant.

Those terms are part of the general bastardization of English. It happens on a consistent basis. Not really worth the effort of paying too much attention to it; it's not an acceptable form of usage in either academics or polite conversation, so you won't be at a disadvantage if you don't have a clue what it's about.

It does make for some good humour though. At least, I laugh at it. It's really just a laid back approach to conversing, nothing more.

You know what scares me? Thinking that more and more people will talk like that soon, until everyone does.

That's close to impossible. For English, the standard form of speech is that of the upper middle class. Even those who don't converse in that manner tend to acknowledge that as the 'correct' or 'appropriate' way of speaking.

When the kind of language that you pointed to in your post comes into contact with the upper middle class one, it tends to be absorbed, but in the process, is transformed. So, in other words, it is made to fit the status quo.

Diversions from the general accepted form of speech are important because they are a language's lifeblood; without them, language would remain stagnant.

English, above all others, has been remarkably accepting of change; no other language has taken in so much and absorbed it all. That is pretty much why English is the most important language in the world; it has penetrated into virtually all cultures, and embraced them to such an extent that in some instances, like in Nigeria, the language has been transformed into a completely different one. You will not be able to understand a Nigerian who is speaking 'English'- it has veered off the path so much so that it is now considered its own language.

No the way it works is, the youth slang will change and 20 years from now you'll be talking about things being "the shit" and your kids will be looking at you like you were born in the Victorian era. "But daddy, we don't say that now. We say things are 'the fucknuts' now."
