Post Confused
1. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you never told us the good news with the weekend warrior: http://www.comingsoon.net/weekendwarrior/2006/jun16.php

Quote:
THIS WEEK’S "GUEST-PERT”:

The Weekend Warrior is very happy to once again have Sandra McFarland, romance movie expert from The World of KJ, offering her opinions on this week’s romantic drama The Lake House.

C'mon. We want to know these things! We're vain!

2. Who is Sandra McFarland exactly?

Yeah that's a mystery, I don't know any prominent women posters on wokj who are really into romance movies. ;)

I'm pretty sure it came from this invitation below and not from any deal with the wokj site it self.

What I'd like to know is by what qualifications is she considered an expert? Has she studied film theory? Does she have a degree? If not, she's hardly an expert.

Yes, Joe, she's an expert. I'll help you out with the definition.

Expert - Showing special skill or knowledge. Specialist.

Now, I took those meanings directly from Webster's dictionary. (it's a big book (mine is blue) with definitions for all kinds of words, and it's what is considered an authority, or "expert", if you will, when trying to find out what words mean.)

You'll notice, in no way, shape, or form does an expert need to fall under your criteria to be an expert. Sheesh...didn't they teach you that at that prestigious university that you are currently attending? (and, no doubt, on the Dean's list!)

Everybody knows that she's the foremost expert on romcoms and romantic dramas. Has she studied film theory? She's probably forgotten more about romcom and romantic drama structure in film than any of us will ever know. Does she have a degree? She gets an A+ from me and anybody else who knows their stuff, so I'd qualify that as a degree from a school that's even more prestigious than yours.

Hey, don't sweat it, though, Joe. I'm sure you're an expert about something, too. Most people have something that they have tremendous knowledge about. You shouldn't try to downplay another's credentials for personal reasons. Like I said, EVERYONE knows who to go to if we have a question about a film in those genres, so yes, she IS an expert. ;)

well .. shes usually on the mark ...

one has to be consistent and good to be an expert .. not have a degree and some authority stamp to make you an expert ... at least i hope not.

I'd consider many people on this site box-office experts. Now, can you tell us, Joe, whether such thing as a degree in box-office knowledge exists? If not, is it forbidden to call anyone a box-office expert?

Not a degree in box office but a degree in general (such as Psychology, etc.). If he wanted a real expert he should try and get a Hollywood person such as a screenwriter who has written romantic films, etc.

expertise comes with experience, not from universities or colleges providing you with stamps of approval.

Usually in order to be a specialist you need to have some sort of education. That's why they don't allow just anyone to become a doctor. And if you had bothered to do any research you would find that yes, I do attend a University ( http://www.stthomas.edu ).

Incredible. It seems most everyone here is such a self-important, take everything serious, person that they attack everything I say. Such complete assholes. Ever heard of treating others as you would like to be treated (I'm just returning the favor because I've been treated poorly).

Good thing that isn't the criteria for doctors and surgeons...

well there you go.

there is a difference between specialist and expert.

though really .... depending on the field you work in, you could very well become a specialist at something without ever having to get a specialized degree in it.

doctors, lawyers and others require registration. they're LEGALLY not allowed to work without the type of degree you're talking about and hence, the specialist title for them is quite different. a lot of people 'act' without ever going to an acting school.

Hey, at least you edited out the part where you called me a prick.

Joe, when talking about a field that's subjective, be it film, music, art, there is no such thing as what you claim. I'd love to see a degree that one of the Beatles or Rolling Stones holds. I'd call those guys specialists.

You can't compare subjective subject matter to things things that you are trying to compare them to. Gosh darnit, I'm writing a letter to that University to find out what they're teaching students in those classrooms! Thanks for the link!

Joe, you're "mistreated" because you're nasty to other people.

If you want to talk about "prestigious" universities, I'm not sure the "romcom expert" is the person to mess with. UVA is better (at least ranking-wise) than all state schools (except MAYBE Berkeley) and most private schools (except some of the Ivies, Stanford, Duke, MIT). Don't use that to justify shitty behavior - UofMinnesota isn't anything more than a plain old state school. Good? Yes. But Bow-Down-To-Me-And-Nod worthy? No.
