Look, I know it looks like a boring and stagey costume drama, reminiscent of Merchant/Ivory at their most stuffy and ponderous (I know that's what I expected), but I promise you it's not. It's much more funny and alive and human. It's a comedy, not a drama. Plus, it's a got a great young Kate Winslet performance, which I know will excite some of you. I can't recommend it highly enough.
Best picture of 1995, and one of the best of the 90's.
I agree. It's very good and Emma Thompson (who won on Oscar for adapting the screenplay) and Kate Winslet are both outstanding. Winslet really should have won the Oscar for this.

I finally saw Awakenings last night on TCM.
It had its moments, but for the most part it was exactly what I expected, which is not a complement. I'm just glad this particular Oscar bait didn't reel in any fish, although it did have some bites.

It's funny that most of us have seen barely any of the 80s nominated films, while if we brought in the 70s list, everyone would actually have quite a bit more from there. I can name at least 6-7 off the top of my head instantly, I'd probably get even more if it was fully posted.

I didn't live in the country for a large part of 2000, which is the only year since I've been into movies that i saw so few. 1998 was a great year.
