I guess they saw that the Incredibles wasn't going to make it to 300 million in the winter. The summer is better for Cars, better weekdays and a DVD out in time for Christmas.

They should have released The Incredibles in the summer too. But, yeah Cars will do better in the summer.

This is a good move for Cars. I never really believed it would make $300 million, and thought it would make barely over $200 million. With the summer, it has a better shot at $300 million, but judging from the trailer, I still don't see more than $250 million.

It looks like Disney does not want to give up the November 4th slot with Cars moving and Chicken Little going to that spot.

disney is becoming muchhhhh wiser. i feel the incredibles needed to stay where it was though it could have had better weekedays in the summer, the problem is was the three juggernauts that were HP3, Shrek 2, and SP2 that the market place may have combusted in fear that there were too many HUGE blockbusters released so close together.
but good move on chicken little i see it performing nicely in the fall season as well as CARS that move was necessary because the first teaser not only looked like crap but cars for some reason to me screams summer movie.

I seriously doubt Cars will make even $225 million. My early prediction is a mere (when compared to their recent films) $175 million.

I'd love to hear Disney's reasons for the moves. Some people think it's a good sign for Cars, others feel the opposite.

This is a good move for everyone and has a few effects on the box office and other films.
1. This is very good for Cars. I felt that in that November spot would have allowed it no more than about $220m. A summer 2006 release gives it less direct competition and better weekdays.
2. This is great for Disney. Incredibles showed that similar weekends to Nemo were not enough and competition can hurt a little. Nemo rocketed ahead based on weekdays. As somebody already said - Incredibles opened where it should have and did pretty much what it should have. The summer is still a better time to release a CGI/animated film - witness Lion King, Nemo, Shrek, Shrek 2 etc. Chicken Little will now get the prime 1st weekend in November slot and that should be good for that film too. Plus the Cars old release date always seemed too soon after the Incredibles. A year and a half between Pixar films will wet peoples appetites a little more.
3. Great news for Harry Potter - it can breathe a little easier now.
4. Even better news for Madagscar - now with Chicken Little out - it pretty much has the whole summer to itself. Some studio should move in to the early July slot with an animated film.

The real reason is that Pixar wants more time to negotiate its contract with Disney and other studios plus Jobs does not like Eisner and his replacement will be named in June 2005, giving Pixar time to negotiate with the replacement before December 2005 (6 month window to get everything signed before the June release date).

Perhaps they're delaying Cars, because they think they could strike a deal with Pixar by then. I don't know, maybe that's stupid and/or already mentioned.

i felt the animation in Shark Tale didn't look as crisp but from what i've seen of Madagascar it seems to be of a higher quality.

Yes, visually it looked the least attractive of any CGI since probably that Vegetales (sp?) movie IMO.

Apparently this was big national news today as Pixar's stock dropped because of the 18 month gap between films...
The question I had:
There is no doubt that after the performance of Shrek 2 and Finding Nemo in comparison to The Incredibles and Monsters Inc. that they feel that a summer release is prefered for money reasons... but is that the only reason.
Is Cars good enough? Do they need more time on it in general to fix some of the negative reaction that the trailer has had?

They will never admit to it, but absolutely.
The reaction it got was terrible; especially when compared to the film that came right after it.
Pixar has build up such a reputation that nothing less than 'very good' will suit the filmgoers. And Cars don't look good.
Plus, they need more time to negotiate with a new partner, or maybe wait til Eisner is finally gone.
