Post Screen Counts/Crowd Reports for Boring Post-Turkey Weekend
Yes, I know it will be boring, but post any post Thanksgiving weekend report here.

But here is some interesting news from my theater, House of the Flying Daggers is playing at our theater this weekend (I'm not sure how many screens yet). At least it will be interesting for the Indie openers, to see how they do.

That's great! I don't expect Crouching Tiger type of PTA since CTHD had a lot more buzz with a win at Toronto Film Festival and receiving standing ovation at Cannes, but still I'm very interested in knowing how House of the Flying Daggers does.

Cinemark 24 in Valley View, Ohio

We getting Closer on 2 screens and I Am David on 1. Sucks that we aren't getting House of Flying Daggers. Valley View always gets movies like this on their 2nd weekend, but there's nothing else to see this weekend so I was hoping they'd get it. The Cedar Lee theatre will probably get it, they get all kinds of art movies.

House of Flying Daggers will be released only in LA and NY this week, and probably next week as well, if it follows the pattern of CTHD. Then it'll expand into more markets the week of Dec. 17th.

I most sincerely hope it will have the highest PTA in the history of cinema.

I really, really, really want this film to do well. And I think it will find a great audience. Here's hoping for a successful run :)

Have you seen it, box? I know you were very disappointed with Hero, so it's interesting to see you have such enthusiasm for HOFD. I will most definitely go to see it the first weekend it's available in the bay area.

BTW, the industry tracking gives HOFD a $700,000 weekend, which would be $46,667 PTA if the theater count holds. CTHD only had $41,450 in its first weekend for a $663,205 weekend, and I expect HOFD to be lower. With similar release dates and release patterns, the comparison between the two will be natural, and I know box has all the charts ready for that. :) CTHD will pull away from new year on since HOFD won't have the oscar buzz to really take off, but it'll definitely be interesting to see.

I am working night shift on Friday, so prepare for House of Flying Dagger and Closer Reports (as Xiayun said, will be playing on two screens).

BTW, Crouching Tiger opened here on December 15 (It's second weekend, and was one of the 43 theaters it was booked in) on two screens (both 400 seater), and it sold out like crazy. Let's see how Daggers compares.

Hopefully House of Flying Daggers won't do so well. Unlike Crouching Tiger or Hero, it is not a good film.

Saw some reports on a Closer thread at OscarWatch forum, and the matinee shows were very busy; some are packed.

from wuthcrackin at BOM:

Theater: Loews Kips Bay 20
Time: 7:00
Show: Closer
Screen: 250 seater
Status: Sold Out
Review: I have seen many a bad movie in my time, "House Of The Dead", "The Cat In The Hat", hell I even sat through the piece of crap that was "Ghosts Of Mars" but I have never ever walked out of a film, until tonight. Closer, like many films, starts out well and then progressivly slides downwards, although I have never seen a movie get lower. The film paints such a bleek picture of love and people in general that one gets the feeling that the film is actually taunting them, saying "everything is pointless." This aside, the film is so mind numbingly boring that I would quite honestly rather watch paint dry then watch this film again. The chemistry between it's quartet of A-list stars is so thin that at one point it seems that every character is the exact same person. The film starts with a slightly interesting idea and caps off the first half with a funny e-chat sex scene. However from that point on the film drops off a cliff and into the fires of hell. It attempts at erotic drama which simply descends into a totally unesisary barrage of F-bombs and C-words. I don't mind cursing, but I do when it gets repetitive. Slowly the relationship between the characters goes from interesting to stiff and ridgid, seemingly repeating the same "I'm leaving you" scene over and over again. In closing, Closer attempts to leave the viewer with a profound view of love, instead you will leave without two hours of your life that you simply could've used better.

Looks like the house is packed today and probably even for the weekend, but if those WOM persists, it will turn from packed house to empty house in a heart beat.

I like Lecter's analysis with Solaris. This reminds me exactly that as well.

Well, I mean...

That was one assessment, and we're already determining it will have bad WOM?

Let me counter this negative review with another crowd report:

A classmate of mine saw the film at a free screening at our college last week.

She said she loved it, and told everyone in class to go and check it out. She also said that the theatre was packed, and that most everyone seemed to have liked it.

So...

it can go either way.
