Yes, and Globe will tell us who is the frontrunner.

Won't they be nominated in different categories though? Reese for Musical/Comedy, Knightley for Drama or is P & P considered a comedy?

No, both are in the Musical/Comedy category.

That will level the field between Phoenix and whoever loses GG Drama, and whoever wins GG Drama will have a leg up in the race. Richard Gere won the globe and he didn;t even get nominated, hoenstly I think the Globes are on eo fhte most irrevelent awards shows out there, with their expanded actor and movie categories its bloody hard not to get nomiated. They nominated Phantom of the Opera, what a crap film. The globes often a ward peopel who don;t even get nominated. WHo wins in teh dramtic category is alot more important then Phoenix's win at the Globe swhen I think of no serious competition. Richard Gere's situation is very different from Phoenix's. That's all I'll say. And I did say whoever wins Drama is the frontrunner.
Gere got some fof the best review sof his life.
My poitn is being in the best actor in a musical/comedy/etc cateogry is the lesser category, the Academy likes awrding dramtic actors, and even though Phoenix had to show dramtic acting chops its a good performance in a bad category at the globes.
The comedy categories at the GG alwasy seemed irrelevent to me, since so often the films in that list don;t get nominated, they are animated pictures, the actors don;t get recognized.
I don;t think winning a GG levels off Phoenix with Hoffman and/or Ledger. Phoe nix with some decent buzz and a critic award win, and then the GG will help, but hen eeds more then jstu a GG. Its like the running joke on the SImpsons, everyone has a GG.

Oh, it seemed like Pride could have gone either way since it's both dramatic and funny.

P&P in comedy cateogory, are they on crack, its not a comedy, yes it strays from teh source material and channels the BRonte sisters, but that makes it even les sof comedy. Having some funny jokes in drama does not a comedy make.
I nver thought of hte globes as being that good of an indictation, at least alone of the frontrunner,s the globes are voted on b ylike 20 people, they have made some strange picks.

I still say he's THE frontrunner to win. I don't flip flop every other second because an online critics group and a Boston critics group do my thinking for me. Some of you guys have been handing out awards left and right and have been burned several times now. Do you really want to get burned again by quickly making declarations based on something as thin as a handful of pretty meaningless critic awards?

I fthere meaningless, then why pretell are we (including you) following them and bothering to record the winners?
Secondly, we haven;t seen every film this year in serious consideration, we have no choice bt to go by a general consensus. Whether Phoenix gave the best peroframnce of the year is one thing, whther he will the oscar is another question...a question whose answer most peopel try to guess via critics awards.
People flip flop b/c buzz flip flops, earlier this year we heard after Cannes we heard all about Tommy Lee Jones and Viggo Mortensen, they ilkely won;t even be nominated. That's what makes following awards season so fun, the frontrunner one week isn;t nominated the next month.
People aren't picking who they think should win, they are pickign the frontrunner, that's gonna change.
You can think Phoenix is the frontrunner, I can disagree, why does that mean other peopel think for me, whereas you are a free thinker?

Seriously. Look at Walk The Line or Ray. Just because the movie had musical numbers, they do not make it a Musical, a Musical Comedy, or a Comedy. Wrong, wrong categories.

Yet another reason why the GG are just oddball awards, I mean none of these fims belong in that category.

The New York Film Critics Circle became the latest group to name the cowboy romance "Brokeback Mountain" as the year's top film, while the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures gave its best-picture award Monday to "Good Night, and Good Luck," George Clooney's depiction of Edward R. Murrow's on-air battles against Sen. Joseph McCarthy.

Both groups selected Ang Lee as best director for "Brokeback Mountain," in which Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal play cowboys who find forbidden, unexpected love in Wyoming during the summer of 1963.
"'Brokeback' was an old-fashioned romance that also fulfilled the group's impulse to be daring and original," said Gene Seymour, film critic for Newsday and president of the New York Film Critics Circle. "It combines the best of both these elements."
On Saturday, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association also chose "Brokeback Mountain" as its top film of 2005. With Golden Globe Award nominations scheduled to be announced Tuesday morning, it's emerging as a front-runner among a wide variety of films that have received acclaim.
The New York critics gave best-actor honors to Ledger, while Reese Witherspoon was named best actress for her spirited portrayal of June Carter Cash in "Walk the Line."

Anyone think too much recognition for Brokeback this early will hurt it?

Backlash? It could arise, but sweeping awards didn't hurt Sideways (it wouldn't have had a chance to win BP anyway, but it helped to secure the screenplay win). And if we go back further, it didn't hurt American Beauty or L.A. Confidential or Schindler's List.

No, I just don't think it matters. These early shows are but pebbles in the ocean.

You're welcome. I just don't know if I'll have to energy to keep up with this and the other charts so if it does me in, I hope that doesn't scare anybody off from taking over. I added Washington.

Not a single mention of either Munich or Walk the Line anywhere there. I know, eh? They were probably the two most considered in terms of awards prospects a while ago. I'm just surprised that Walk the Line can't even garner the Best Actor/Best Actress nominations anywhere, that were such a sure bet. Poenix and Reese are getting practically no love whatsoever. What's going on? Munich didn't set the world on fire like I thought it would (so far at least). PEACE, Mike.
as Munich finally gets on the scorecard tonight.

Keener and Amy are dominating the supporting actress mentions so far. I think Keener could post a reasonable threat to Keaton if she can maintain her momentum and goes on to receive a nomination. Her body of work this year is great, with a good mix of different types of films.

That's just it, though. Keener can only be nominated for one film, these awards she's winning seem to be noticing her for every single movie she's appeared in this year. It reminds me of Julianne Moore appearing in like 30 movies in 1999. I love her, but I think she may cancel herself out. She really wasn't that great in Capote, anyway. I actually liked her more in 40 Year Old Virgin.

These critics are acting like they were the ones who snubbed Giamatti last year. I thought he was serviceable in Cinderella Man, but there was nothing about his performance that stood out. It was pretty standard. He was good, but hardly the best supporting actor of the year.

Wonder if the early winners will keep up their pace
Best Picture > Brokeback Mountain
Best Director > Ang Lee
Best Actor > Philip Hoffman
Best Actress > Reese Witherspoon
Supporting Actor > no clear cut winner > William Hurt & Paul Giamatti
Supporting Actress > Amy Adams & Catherine Keener
***************
guess the biggest new names that haven't been brought up too much before are Paul Giamatti & Catherine Keener.
Really like the PG wins.
