Even in a slow year, I still don't think this will surprise and go over 300. I'm not convinced it will go over 250, either.

I think it's possible. However, it will need about 115m for the 5 day weekend. I think it might just do that.

I'll say around 260 Million or so is about right and Jack Black and Naomi Watts are not big draws for moviegoers along with an overlated, overstuffed FX movie with a simplistic storyline and an overly long running time like KONG, Plus it's going to have to gross an awful lot more than 300 Million to be considered a hit with the budget cost and marketing at almost 300 Million alone for this.. As far as Anticipation and hype?? Really, it's only the internet that seems to be hyping the hell out of this and non-existent in the real world and that is a fact..

Just watched Leno where Naomi Watts was a guest. They showed a very impressive clip with Kong fighting dinosaurs with Watts in his grip. The special effects are really good. Universal is simply advertising Kong to death, I've seen so many clips, TV spots, trailers, etc. I wonder what the marketing budget is for this one?

If only internet fanboys are hyping it then why would it make 260m? That would make it one of the biggest movies of the year. Sure it's budget is big, but it should cross 200m domestic and another 350m+ overseas, so it's fine.

Because there the same internet fanboys that saw LOTR(All 3 of the movies) at least 20 times a piece propelling it to the numbers it received, so naturally this is the same group of fans who will see this movie 20 times in a row as well because Jackson and WETA are associated with it..

Like Kill said, it's certainly a possibility, but it'll need some fantastic WOM.
And I completely agree with this.
It is possible, but I don't think so. I predict $260 million as of now. GoF should come out on the top of the winter releases.

I look very forward to this movie. The original was one of the first movies that I ever saw, and I have owned the 1933 and 1976 versions for over 15 years now.
With that said, there my be some fanboy looniness at work here. Every movie that Peter Jackson makes isn't going to be worshipped by the general movie going public or the academy. It's just a popcorn flick, and I'd be blind if I didn't notice that Jackson's biggest fans are projecting more than that on the film.
It has a much better shot a 300 million than it does of getting any attention from the academy who has surely had their fill of New Zealand hillbillies for awhile. (outside of tech noms)
The 3 hour runtime (which is a bit self indulgent and unnecessary for this story) will probably put off many from seeing it more than once, and this isn't exactly something with a LOTR fanbase. It's the multiple viewings that drive movies to those levels, and I just don't see it happening here.

If King Kong breaks 250 mil, the media wil crown Peter Jackson the next Steve Spielberg.
I am going to say 275 just to be safe but I think 300 mil is a def., if the quality is there

I think Kong will top out at about 240 mill.

Did I put in some sort of prediction a long long time ago? Meh, I'll hover round the $250-$260 range. I'm not feeling vibes either way. It's a WOM issue, as usual.
I wouldn't count on the LotR crowd. Not the women, anyway. They won't go just for Jackson's name. The Men will go for what WETA has to offer.
