Wow, I thought Sponge would beat Treasure, but they both did fantastic...

If it keeps dropping like this weekend, and with Christmas it could actually get to $100m. But one bad weekend could screw things up and that could be the post-Thanksgiving weekend. So we'll just have to see.

Wow! Thanks for the rundown, JURiNG. I didn't realize it had a shot at this record, that's pretty cool. My gut says it'll end up third on the list, however, with about $27.5 to $28M.....not shabby at all!

This was kindof a fun weekend at the BO. Two openers over $30M, thats awesome and unexpected for me.

Unless you're talking about next weekend...this was(is) The Incredibles' third weekend.

Yeh well, i was thinking that also, but the drop this weekend (probably due to Spongebob) got me thinking that if it drops like this every weekend going from now on, it might only make $250M, so i played it safe

But yeh, i wouldl ike for it to make my prediction still, of $310M

My Weekend Analysis:

For the first time since Matrix Revolutions and Elf, we have 2 films that open over $30 million on the same weekend. Overall, it is a very busy weekend that was dominated by films targeted at the family audience, as the top 10 gross increased 7.8% over last weekend and 14.9% over the same weekend last year.

National Treasure made a surprise appearance at the top of the chart, as Nicolas Cage had his best opening of his career. It grossed an estimated $35.3M from 3,017 theaters for a strong $11,700 PTA. Cage's collaberations with producer Jerry Bruckheimer, which includes Gone in 60 Seconds, Con Air, and The Rock, all had good legs regardless of the reviews. With Thanksgiving coming up, a B+ user rating at Yahoo, and a healthy 30.9% Friday-to-Saturday increase despite the competition from other family-oriented films, National Treasure should follow the trend and end up with $120-130M total.

Following close behind is The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie with an estimated $33.5M in 3,212 theaters. Its PTA is also strong at $10,430, which is higher than each of the first two Rugrats movies. Nickelodeon Films once again is able to translate a popular cartoon TV show to a box office success, and it provided a big help to the struggling Paramount studio. The movie has received good reviews from both critics and general public, so the future looks bright for it as well. I expect it to finish in the $140-150M range.

With two new openings that target the family audience doing great business, The Incredibles suffered a bigger-than-expected drop of 46.7% for an estimated $26.8M. However, it probably shouldn't be much of a surprise. With Veteran Day holiday, The Incredibles absorbed a lot of business from Wednesday to Sunday last week. It still has grossed a splendid $177.8M overall, and similar to Monsters Inc., it will have a great Thansgiving weekend, as well as good holds all the way through Christmas. It should find its way to $300M.

Polar Express actually enjoyed the best hold in the top 10, dropping 34.8% to an estimated $15.2M in its second weekend. The total gross stands at $51M. The weekdays have also been strong comparing to others, so it should have no problem passing $100M, but not much more than that.

Sitting at No. 5 is Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason for an estimated $10.1M. This is a real disappointment, considering it more than quadrupled its theater count but was only able to generate 16.4% more gross. Its PTA plummeted 74.8% to $4,124. It will continue to fall fast after Thanksgiving with Closer coming up. After a blazing start, the bad WOM could prevent the movie from even passing $50M.

The other two openers from last weekend both suffered big declines. After the Sunset dropped 52.5% to $5.3M, while Seed of Chucky dropped 64.3%, the biggest second weekend drop since Alien vs. Predator and Yu-Gi-Oh!. After the Sunset will try to hit $30M, and Seed of Chucky can only hope to get as close to $20M as possible.

For the rest of the top 10, Ray and The Grudge dropped an identical 45.8%. Ray will start to suffer continuous theater losses and need some Oscar glory to get more dollars out of its run. Otherwise, it will finish with a very good $70M total. The Grudge has defied convention about horror movies and continues to have good hold. It's on its way to $115M. The other horror movie, Saw, dropped 53.4% to $3M. On the bright side, it passed $50M, and its run can only be considered successful as well.

On the indie side, Pedro Almodovar's Bad Education grossed an estimated $147,000 for a sizzling $49,000 average, while Finding Neverland and Kinsey continue to do very good, although not spectacular, business with their expansions to the major markets. Finding Neverland grossed $821,000 for an average of $14,403, while Kinsey grossed $569,000 for an average of $15,805. Sideways is inching closer to the top 10 with a $1.81M weekend. Its PTA is still very good at $6,487 in its 5th weekend.

It was a "fun" movie, not the best thing ive ever seen but it fits in good for the holidays. a good way to escape and get away from all the shopping that will be going on this weekend, plus its actually kid friendly.
