Post Alexander vs. The Kranks
Anyone have any thoughts on which one might do better next weekend? At this point, the top spot seems like a bit of a crap shoot to me depending on how this weekend turns out. As far as the two new movies, Alexander seems stronger because more people have been waiting for it (although reviews are going to be terrible) although Kranks has the advantage of screen counts and the history of Thanksgiving for holiday/family movies to do well. Then again....it also has tons of competition in that market already. I've been hedging back and forth but I think Kranks might beat Alexander, but not by much. Anyone else?

I have to go with the Kranks especially as it is during that holiday period.

Kranks will win. Sadly. Alexander had a lot going for it, but that low theater count is gonna hurt. Kranks has a high theater count, and it's a Christmas movie. It's got a Cheaper By The Dozen feel to it, and I expect about the same box-office wise. Alexander should open in the mid-$20 millions for the weekend, and have great legs to push it over $100 million.

I'm not exactly sure about Alexander having great legs. Movies often plummet the weekend after Thanksgiving, and if Alexander is not really well-received, don't expect it to make it past $100M if it opens under $30M.

Anyway, I'd say Christmas with the Kranks will win over Alexander by a fairly wide margin, perhaps about a $35-45M 5-Day for Kranks and a $20-25M 5-Day for Alexander.

You may be right, Libs...the early word from ALexander is that it's awful and I keep remembering movies from big directors like Solaris and THe Missing. BOth opened over Thanksgiving and didn't do well at all..not sure about legs if it's really as bad as people say.

i'd have to say kranks, though the trailer looked terrible and they did not stay completely true to the book, and the fact that the reviews look to be pretty miserable it's a feel good Christmas in November movie that people will flock to see anyway just to get in the holiday spirit. sadly, my parents have already decided they are dragging me to it, and im jewish.

Kranks-35-40 5 DAY
Alexander- 20-27 5 DAY

Kranks will double Alexander. Alexander is having bomb written all over it with all the bad press (well, there's no such thing as bad press... ), but I think the homosexuality will turn off many, most of its main audience.

Kranks
Opening: $24.7
Total: $111.0

Alexander
Opening: $16.9
Total: $43.0 (Yes, that low.)

Already said it before, the Kranks are going to blow Alexander away.

With the low theater count:
Alexander- 5 day total-20-25 mil(being generous)
Kranks-40 - 45 mil for 5 day total

People keep saying Kranks is a family film but I just don't see the kid appeal in it. It looks fun for parents, but is there much in it for 10 year olds and teenagers?

It will probably do decently, I'm just wary of comparing it to other family movies because it seems more adult oriented.

Well, goodness knows the book it's based on ("Skipping Christmas", penned by John Grisham) is not a children's book. I guess it's referred to as a "family movie" because of the PG rating and slapstick-y humor.

That hilarious bit with Tim Allen all botoxed up has got to be worth a few million in opening weekend box office on it's own. :)

I really hope Stone didnt fu**** it up that bad. I think its a shame that we ever have to think if a "normal" xmas comedy can challenge one of the biggest storys in history filmed by a (normally) outstanding Director.

Dont worry,

The real Alexander movie comes out in less than a year starring Leonardo Dicaprio.

Ah, they actually canceled that project altogether, so...

To update my comments ...

Some of you may have known ... but this film is uncertain to be made (the Alexander film i was talking about)

It would star Leonardo Dicaprio and Nicole Kidman.

The Director says he is still working on the script, so maybe it isnt dead, but its release date is firmly in 2006, something that I had not known.
