Post BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN (Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger)
Image

Cast - Jake Gyllenhaal (Jack Twist), Heath Ledger (Ennis Del Mar), Anne Hathaway (Lureen), Randy Quaid (Joe Aguirre), Michelle Williams (Alma), Scott Michael Campbell, Anna Faris

Release Date: December 9th, 2005 (NY/LA/SF); December 16th, 2005 (expands to selects cities); January, 2006 (expands wide)

MPAA Rating: R (for sexuality, nudity, language and some violence)

Premise: Set in Texas and Wyoming, this is the romantic tale of two male cowboys from very different backgrounds who meet and fall in love while working together as sheep ranch hands near Wyoming's Brokeback Mountain the summer of 1961. Their lives take different courses, however, with Jack Twist (Gyllenhaal) becoming a rodeo cowboy while Ennis Del Mar (Ledger) remains a ranch hand, and the film follows their lives as they see each other again over the next 20 years. Their relationship is rocky, however, as they must deal with the challenges posed as the intolerance of pre-(and post)-Stonewall rural America rears its ugly, violent head against the two lovers.

What is everyone else's opinion on this film? I think it sounds absolutely amazing and sounds great! Hopefully my theater will get it before January but if they don't, I'll just have to wait. Also, it should be noted that the poster above is a leaked poster, so there are still some changes to be made.

It's not an indie, it will be released wide and is being produced by a major studio.

Thats odd I haven't heard about that. I'm sure I'll still enjoy the movie just fine, I hear the book is amazing as well and most of the early buzz is fantastic.

All of the early buzz comes pretty much from the studio.

I am sure you will like it, based on what I know if your movie profile.

You can find the short story online (not a book). It's super short.

Unless this gets a massive amount of Oscar nominations (which I somewhat doubt) I won't plunk down money to see this in theaters.

I always try to go see the heavily nominated moves before the big show.

I'm really looking forward to this movie. The cast is amazing, and the story seems really interesting. Hopefully it is a success at the box office.

It would have been much more interesting if this was made 50 years ago with John Wayne and Humphrey Bogart starring.
Ill pass.

Ever since I heard about this movie, along with the fact that it stars two big actors and is a going to be a mjor release, I have been endlessly curious to what kind of havoc it is going to cause when released.
I'm intrigued. I'm probabbly gonna see it.

Why? I doubt it has a big budget, plus I think that it might be trying to be an Oscar nom. I doubt it will get it but whoknows.

It's probably going to be another Dreamers. Big ambition, looooong sex scenes.... and nothing else?

I guess Kirsty Alley must have eaten the "big book of what not to do in Hollywood" again.
Because on page 1, number 1; in giant [not pink] letters it says

"DO NOT MAKE A GAY MOVIE"
Subtext: This includes, but is not limited to, gay lead, gay supporting character [other than comic relief in female skewing films], gay subtext, gay hero, gay villan, gay bodyguard, gay extras, gay inneudo, gay music, gay themes, gay storyline, gay actor, gay hair, gay dogs, gay props, gay sound effects and gay special effects.

followed by

"DO NOT CAST JENNIFER LOPEZ"
....and so forth.

But--but--that's like every movie ever made! My bf and I watch movies and entertain ourselves with how many gay moments we can spot in a movie. I don't think any movie has come out unscathed. It's part of the vast liberal homosexual conspiracy to make us all gay by osmosis. Just look at LOTR. Nevermind, way too easy. Just look at the Star Wars saga. Gay robots! Kirsty didn't mention gay robots, did she? See, that's because she's part of the conspiracy too!

Oh, I think it will be a major bomb too. Keep in mind that I can't wait to see it. I think it'll be wonderful.

But no movie that has ever taken a serious look at a homosexual relationship has been successful. America, by and large, has decided they don't want that. Look at the few succesful 'gay-themed' films...The Birdcage....In & Out... Hell, look at Will & Grace...all, while sympathetic, are filled to the brim with safe and comfortable stereotypes.

I think this one is strictly arthouse/Urban areas. And that's a shame.

I don't think the studio expects it to be a huge hit, but I'm sure it will make its money back.

It is Focus' movie. Focus is a indie division of a major studio.

If Broken Flowers thread is in [Foreign and Independent Film] forum, why this movie isn't?[/b]

There's little doubt in my mind that the film will bomb. Americans by and large don't embrace "Gay" films. Just look at how it ruined 'Alexander.' The film had many problems but the negative publicity garnered by the inclusion of the gay subplot easily outweighed any other buzz.
