Wow!!! Wow!! Wow!!
That trailer was gorgeous, fantastic, brilliant! I am really excited about this film now!
Arch, you are so correct in saying that it just might fill the void in the wake of LOTR! We can look forward to the EE, but it's not the same if you know what I mean!
The Phantom, Christine, the sets, the music, the cinematography all look and sound incredible! After a lackluster year in the cinema this flick may just top my most anticpated of the year!
The story is so close to me and I own the music on tape and CD and sheet music! I was once a involved in a classical unit when I was a teenager! I played the cello, violin, and flute and we did Phantom of the Opera one season and that to me was the best thing I have ever done! I saw the play three times and it is always touching! The Phantom's heartache is so wrenching that one cannot help but relate!
It seems that it all will come to life once more and this time on the big screen! I for one will be one of the first in the queue!
Ta!
P.S. I love your avatar! That is one of my favourite pics of the Lady of Light!

Thanks, this Galadriel picture is my favourite from the calendar series

Actually Phantom will open here in Australia on Boxing Day, the same day as Meet the Fockers and The Incredibles.....they all want to chip in on LOTR's date, i don't blame them.....it's the hottest date in the year.....
This year it falls on a Sunday i believe.......so they will basically have a 1-Day opening weekend.......or a 8-Day Opening Weekend if you count the whole week as previews.
It's going to be an interesting engagement.......however, i have already decided that i will see Phantom on that Date. I honestly couldn't care less about The Incredibles so i'll see it another time...
When does Phantom open in New Zealand?

My first exposure to Phantom of the Opera was back in Year 7 primary school.
My friend who's a Piano player was learning the music to Phantom and as part of a music class performance, we decided to get together and perform a duet to the theme "The Phantom of the Opera".
Back then i was just beginning guitar lessons so i wasn't able to utilise my skills (not that it would fit anyway)..... so naturally i sang..........that's right i sang......both Christine's part and Phantom's part.
It was so scary because it was the first time i sang in front of so many people (my whole class), and i don't take singing lessons so it was just raw talent....i was freaking out.....but i loved the song.....
Of course, the high notes towards the end were unreachable for me.....i just couldn't......
As you can see, this movie is very important to me, in some weird but special way.....like you Murivor, i'm there on opening day for sure.

The trailer was excellent, most notably the second half. The first portion was slightly underwhelming, but the progression in the second half was very well day.
Definately looking forward to this film. As for predictions:
Opening (wide): $22 million
Total: $130 million

Where's this?
For us in Australia, i don't recall any performances of the Phantom of the Opera in the past 5 years, pity, cause i would really consider going

It started to come alive for me with Masquerade......it's the first time i've actually heard it in full glory, sounds absolutely grand and fantastic. rink:
Also Gerard singing Music of the Night was so raw and organic, i like it!!! And he made it to the high notes....bravo :Jump:

Broadway's Phantom of the Opera Reaches 7,000th Performance Nov. 10
http://www.playbill.com/news/article/89499.html
The Cameron Mackintosh/Really Useful Theatre Company, Inc. production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's smash, directed by Harold Prince, becomes one of only two productions in Broadway history hit the 7,000 mark. Composer Lloyd Webber's Cats, also produced by Mackintosh, is the other.
"Even 17 years on, the show’s grosses continue to defy conventional wisdom and sales patterns for long-running shows," according to the Phantom production office. "So far this year, total grosses in 2004 have exceeded total grosses for the same week in 2003 by almost $2 million ($25,225,741 by the 44th week in 2004, compared with $23,576,095 by that same week in 2003), and all without a ticket price increase."
Billed as the most successful stage musical of all time, The Phantom of the Opera has worldwide ticket sales exceeding $3.2 billion (surpassing the highest grossing film of all time, "Titanic," which has grossed $1.9 billion worldwide) and has been seen by over 100 million people. The winner of seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, the New York production has been seen by over 10 million people and grossed over $550 million

I'm kinda anticipating it, but with Schumacher, I have doubts...
And, no. Like Alexander, this doesn't have a shot at BP because Chicago won in 2002.

Actually, I think if it can get nominated, it will have a great chance to win. The style is different from Chicago. Not that I believe them, but MCN actually claimed after the screening, it believes the only film that can stop Opera from winning is The Aviator.

Has anyone actually seen the Theatrical trailer in cinemas, i've been waiting anxiously to see it but it's not attached to anything yet here in Australia.
I would've thought that being an adult's movie that it would be attached to Hero or Bridget Jones.....argh :x

Hate to rain on everyones parade, but.... I'm just not feeling this one
The trailer is gorgeous though. I think we may have another "Les Misarbles" on our hands. Broadway does not ensure success.

Alexander's position is definately very shaky at the momment, it's getting negative reviews all over the place. :? . But being the only epic movie up for contention, it might just scrape through if it gets buzz in other areas like directing, maybe acting and definately the techies.
Phantom is in a very good position at the momment. The field this year is definately very open, with Ray and Finding Neverland the only major contenders for BP so far.....and we're in the middle of November already.
That leaves, Alexander, The Aviator and Phantom as the only biggies left. And if the Academy likes to go foreign , then there's Mar Adentro and A Very Long Engagement.
If Phantom can live up to expections or at least matches it, then i think a nom is inevitable.
My Predictions:
Finding Neverland
Ray
Phantom
Alexander
The Aviator

But what if it does win, wouldn't that be great ance: , and all the columns so far have Phantom as the early favourite no
No seriously, i don't think it can win BP but if it can garner a nom than i'll be very happy.
I wonder if they'll make a joke like the 4th LOTR is nominated.... ....ah, wishful thinking Archangel

I'm confused. You say 3.2 billion WW in the thread title but predict only 310 million in the first post.
Where did the other 2.9 billion go? Did you skim it? Someone check Archangel's bank accounts!

No, Archie, didn't you read the article on Phantom passing 7,000th Performance.

5 Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace Fox $431,088,301 1999

16 The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring NL $314,776,170 2001
17 Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones Fox $310,676,740 2002

10 Finding Nemo BV $864.6 $339.7 39.3% $524.9 60.7% 2003
I wonder where Cats is, if it too has also passed its 7,000th performance, then surely its takings would be slightly higher.

Schumacher directed this,I doubt it will be an oscar contender. This is the same guy that directed Batman and Robin.
With Alexander getting a bit of bad buzz i think the oscar race is wide open, and if The aviator gets shaky reviews then TPOTC might be abale to snkeak in.

What's with all this hatred towards Joel Schumacher , i dont' get it. Can we at least give him a chance, please!
That being said, i loved his work in Batman Forever, still one of my favourite movies of All-Time. He lost it with Batman and Robin, but Phantom could well prove that he has what it takes.
BTW - I'll be very surprised if TPOTC gets a nomination. :o
