Ace Ventura, Mask and Dumber all came out in 1994. Is there an equivalent for an unknown actor to score 3 hits in one year? Channing Tatum had 3 in one year, but he wasn't that unknown.

Carrey's wage for Dumb and Dumber was already $10m. Crazy.

That is actually insane. Was In Living Color super popular to warrant him getting a $10 million paycheck right off the bat with Dumb and Dumber? Did they see his work during filming and immediately greenlight The Mask and Ace Ventura? I guess I'm not sure which one he actually filmed first - doesn't seem clear on Wikipedia.

EDIT:
Here we go - http://articles.latimes.com/1994-05-15/ ... jim-carrey

That article came out in May of 1994, where Ace Ventura had just released and exploded in popularity. He shot The Mask directly after Ace Ventura's filming ended (but before it was released). He then shot Dumb and Dumber in the summer of 1994, released later that year in December.

IIRC, while he was known to some because of In Living Color - he was generally and unknown to the mainstream audience.

And he did manage to negotiate a massive pay day for Dumb and Dumber off the back of Ace Ventura's success and The Mask's buzz.

The following year Ace Ventura 2 would go on to open to $80m adjusted. Insane.

Probably underrated that they pulled this off with a Felicity Jones spinoff... how far the brand has fallen.

Something beating TFA should be pretty realistic if it only has to be 400 mil less than its adjusted number.

Rogue One is very much like Captain Marvel. It opened 1 year after TFA so had that halo effect. It's still incredible that TFA beat Phantom Menace adjusted which felt like the most hyped film of all time when it was released.

I can honestly say say I’ve never heard of the bells of st. Mary. A couple of so called flops on here as well. It is kind of ridiculous to think maybe a misguided film like cleopatra probably would have cost 150-200 considering the talent, but would cost the same today

Is there an explanation why films cost less today, it’s an area of inflation that has very much interested me. Did switching to digital really have that much of an effect.

It’s particularly apparent in action films. Die Hard 3 cost 100 million in 95,

I'm not an expert in film budgets but I feel they take more advantage of tax incentives maybe? I feel like I hear budgets as "after rebates" so if Australia for instance is covering 1/4 of the budget with tax credits the film in itself cost more.

It feels like $600m is now the "$300m" magic blockbuster mark that many of us cut our teeth on in the 90s/early 00s.

2-3 films a year get there. Still rarified air.

since ageless wonder Demi Moore is blowing up at the moment, worth noting 1990s GHOST was one of the biggest hits of all time when it opened in 1990.

I believe she got the bolt ons prior to Indecent Proposal.

In the early 90s she was dominating hubby Bruce at the box office. Then in 94/95 it switched - Bruce made a comeback with Pulp and followed up with DHwaV. Demi had one flop after another - Scarlett Letter, Juror, Striptease etc
