 Re: Joker 2 - Oct. 4 - 6 Box Office # Bust
$13.3M previews for Joker #1 in 2019. Joker 1's $96,202,337 OW now would adjust to $117,744,939. Total adjusted $401,350,083. So Marvels retained 19.8% of Captain Marvel unadjusted to beat Alice 2's retention. For Joker to do worse it would need to gross < $66.4M total. So at least there's some positive news here, it's not a Marvels drop % wise though let's see if it beats it's total. Wouldn't it be funny now to see Venom do $300M+. Beetlejuice potentially tripling Joker 2's box office gross was not on my box office bingo card.

Joker 2 is a huge let down of a film. The writing was on the wall when they made it a musical and decided to treat the audience with utter contempt. WoM will be toxic. So much potential pissed away. Shame on you WB.

Oh, I fucking love it when a film that I want to fail does actually fail. The Marvels' floppage was unrivaled. I don't want Joker 2 to do that badly, just to disappoint and do less than the first.

35m OW and will miss 60m domestic. This will be a bigger disaster than even Alice was.

Per Charlie- 13.75 true Friday for Joker. 20 mil opening day. Horrendous WOM leads to 38-42 mil opening weekend. Ouch!

Going to match Morbius 39/72?
Amazing this and the Marvels did what they did when not that long ago you could make Morbius and still have 39 million worth of people go to it opening weekend.

The first opened to $39.3 million opening day. So it's already at half of the original. Pitiful.

 Re: Joker 2 - Oct. 4 - 6 Box Office # Bust
Interestingly we're still over last year's weekend tally. Shows how bad the post Barbenheimer box office was.
Joaquin with Joker and Napoleon flopping back to back isn't good.
Also feels like a 2019 reversal. Burton's movie disappointed (Dumbo) but overperformed in 2024. Meanwhile Joker 1's success in 2019 leads to a flop in 2024 reversal.
Mufasa is next up. TLK was a huge hit in 2019. I feel like Mufasa will probably lean more toward the successful side given its a family film opening at Christmas time.

Why? he got his crazy absurd money for both and was well received in both. It's not like he's ever been anything close to a draw. Remember the 5+ years when he just happened to pretend to be a recluse. He just pulled in like 25 million more than his entire career combined, he's set for whatever the hell he does next, even if that's retire. Phoenix has pretty much stopped the living hollywood system since 2005, though I'd even argue Ladder 49 back in 2004 because Walk the Line was more of a surprise.

This has got to be among the most disappointing opening weekends ever. At least marvels and Alice were following poorly received predecessors.

 Re: Joker 2 - Oct. 4 - 6 Box Office # Bust
Went through the top 200 films of all time domestic ($180M+ predecessors) and this ranks with Alice 2, Jaws 2, Exorcist 2, Grease 2, Marvels and MBFGW 2 for biggest drops under $100M. Even Aquaman that dropped from $400M+ looks like Titanic compared to this. Also feels like Narnia a bit here though Prince Caspian dropped 50%+ feels like a similar case of messing with a tried formula (holiday release to May) and losing the magic of the first.
Even ID4's sequel without Smith could pull $100M+. Joker 2 may not pull $70M.
I think this is top 3 hands down one of the most disappointing box office openings of all time. I'm struggling thinking of one worse. Godzilla 1998 as disappointing as it was in terms of budget and expectations would still adjust now to a $105M OW today. Batman and Robin would be at $105M today as well.
$37M OW?! That's 1/3 of a Godzilla 1998 or Batman and Robin in terms of admissions.

Caspian adjusts to $210M+ domestic. This might do a third of that.

Damn at Independence Day 2 being easily more successful, it couldn’t have looked worse. Alice 2 is probably closest, though it still made more adjusted.
2015 Fantastic Four and Catwoman adjusted are right in range. I also looked up American Reunion as an old flop randomly and also about 70 adjusted (Wouldn’t be bad for a comedy now actually? Make American Graduation where their kids are the high schoolers?)

Add on Phoenix bailing on the Todd Haynes movie he helped create and executive produce days before filming was going to start. He might have to law low for a couple of years now that audiences have completely rejected him. As for Mufasa, the one thing it has going for it that Joker 2 doesn’t is that it’s made by a good filmmaker. Mufasa is probably good. Joker 2 could’ve been good and absolutely taken the piss out of the audience who enjoyed the first, but Todd Phillips is not the filmmaker to do it.

Normal actors don't make C'mon C'mon and Beau is Afraid after a billion dollar hit. Napoleon was a bad film thanks to Ridley. Joaquin will never be a movie star. But he will still be able to slot into good films. He just needs to ditch the self importance and elitist attitude, choose better scripts and better directors, and reduce his output. If he could do a We Own the Night-type film in, say, 2026, then he'll be back in everyone's good books again.

 Re: Joker 2 - Oct. 4 - 6 Box Office # Bust
TLK IP is just in a different league though even with the subpar last film.
A 2011 re-release managed $94M domestic which is ridiculously good. The Broadway show, original movie, etc.
1994's version adjusts to $1B domestic now. 2019's version $676M. It could lose 70% of its audience and still do $200M+ domestic.
Add in a family film at Christmas and it's got so much in its favor. Sonic is also there but the last two both hovered just under the $200M range. It will get a bump from Christmas but not a Meet The Fockers type scenario.
Also on ID4's sequel, it would now adjust to $134M. Last film did $389M worldwide (unadjusted) even without the main star so I remain convinced the IP still has pull if done with the right film and Smith back.
