Post Twisters - what went right?
Not expecting this to fall off since it seems WoM is strong but that preview # is pretty terrific.

This really could have bombed badly. Overseas doesn't look too hot now but if all things align this could do well over 200m+ domestic which is crazy.

I think the main thing that helped this were the trailers. Even though this is based off a previous 90s movie it kinda felt fresh, I saw the trailer as many times as I saw A Quiet Place and for this trailer I didn't silently groan every time it came on.

I don't think Glen Powell is a draw yet but I think his casting did help with a lot of appeal to the movie.

I predicted bomb so I guess I don't know, but maybe the visual style was appealing compared to the super obvious green screen Marvel/Disney remake era.

I think it must have appealed to the Godzilla vs Kong/Planet of the Apes type audience that is not online as much.

Overseas is absolute disaster. It will be well below 1st movie unadjusted. Bombing everywhere. Back then it was a spectacle movie that brought in the audience and now they prefer other spectacle like characters on suits and other stuff.

Domestic the tornadoes are more relatable. At least in the heartland. Plus Powell has been high profile past 6 months with Anyone but you and Hitman.

Curious if they'll reveal what cities do the best for the weekend. Imagine if middle America sees this they'll love it

It's going to be the heartland film of the summer so can see it playing well till Labor Day. Zeitgeist movie coming up! I see a similar thing happening like TGM where older people first go see it and then it broadens demos. The OW is probably heartland driven and will reach the coasts as it becomes a must see movie.

Powell is indeed a bonafide box office star. Supporting role in TGM (actioner) where he had minimal real impact but anchoring a return of romcoms ($88M domestic) AND the return of disaster movies (TBD but $$$), he's officially a bankable star. Probably moreso than Timothee that relied on strong IP fanbases in Wonka and Dune. Twister was 28 years old and the genre was dead as were romcoms.

His asking price is about to go way up, up and away!

A movie set in the heartland with no political message.
Its just a popcorn movie for everyone.
This will play very well in the south and midwest.

International im not sure, its very americana.

Much like the first one, it's a movie going experience that needs to be seen on the big screen. People will go when they feel its just not the same as seeing it at home (Dune, Oppenheimer, Avatar).

This absolutely should have opened the Summer season. It's a crowd pleasing spectacle.

This is what makes it so attractive. No political agendas. Good mix of humour/action/romance and pathos. Wholesome film for all.

Personally I wasnt keen on the trailer but went to see it and loved it. Probably the opposite of the 1996 film which had amazing trailers but didnt quite live up to them - even back then as a juvenile.

He’d probably need another, or a bigger franchise film to be considered a draw, but there’s not a huge supply…sleeper hits are rarer than ever. Without that, it’s difficult to become established as a so-called “star” anymore.

He could be a good character actor though.

I think it’s more cultural than just tornadoes.

Aesthetically it looks like the first. Marketing wise. And sometimes people just want junk food. Easy entertainment. Maybe this fits the bill.

After seeing it, it is different from what Hollywood has been offering lately. It fits into Shack’s “audiences want IP, but unique takes on IP” theory.

Vibe marketing. The heartland approach, soundtrack, and trailers all in sync. Similar to Jurassic World, I think the strong RT score really helps entice people.

Of course this should have opened the summer. Twister 3 needs to be greenlit tomorrow and given a better date.

Some tidbits:

-No surprise, Latinos/Hispanics made up 26% of the audience. Every breakout we've had from June on that's been a contributing factor. 51% Caucasian.

-Michael Crichton who was the creator behind the Twister (1996) film franchise also this weeks #1 book, Eruption.

-Biggest disaster movie OW of all time beating Day After Tomorrow.

-Highest rating by demo was given by females under 25 (94%). Per PostTrak last night, 24% went to Twisters because of Powell.

-Playing evenly between females/males and younger/older adults. 18-34 set at 46% . Men and women over 25 bought tickets at 38% apiece. Big turnout by couples at 41% and groups of people (2-5+).

-Audience score 92% and A- (CinemaScore).

-Friday's top theater was a suburb of Oklahoma ($130K).

-$155M budget from THR not including marketing.

-Overindexed markets: Dallas, Houston, Oklahoma City, (200%+ over norm), San Antonio, Nashville, Kansas City and St. Louis. The director growing up on a farm in Arkansas certainly would have helped tailor a film to the heartland.

-Smaller Friday than Oppenheimer by $1M but bigger Sat by $1M.

-Kathleen Kennedy's saw an episode he directed of The Mandalorian, endorsed Lee to her husband Frank Marshall who was looking for a director for Twister sequel.

It seems like people are friendlier to old school genres, disaster, romcom, etc. We need Glen Powell to play a husband trying to kill his wife.

I'm glad Lee is now a mainstream talent. He's a great director and has loads more potential.

Powell will hopefully get a pick of roles from here. Hopefully not the mooted Backdraft remake.
