Dune: Messiah predictions (rumoured December 2026)
Warners just blocked out a date in December 2026 for an "untitled Dennis Villeneuve event film" (which is obviously Dune 3)
Will it pull a Return of the King and have another increase in box office from Dune Part II?

Re: Dune: Messiah predictions (rumoured December 2026)
I am going through the books and I am in book 4(God Emperor of Dune). I must say that minus the 1st book rest were just ok. Messiah can be translated to big screen but its not that action heavy unlike 1st book. Plus Chani in the book and what we saw in 2 movies are different. I am not sure how some of that stuff will translate. Plus his sister Alia was mostly cut out from Dune 2 and in Messiah she has a big role.
Based on the book I would not expect a big increase but DV could cook something to make this not about remaking the book. Some of the stuff around how the character takes control of universe was not big part of the book(just mentioned). May be for action sake, DV could add to that.
For now I would say 80/200/550 kind of run would be good for this.

Only problem with Dec 26 release is that when Avatar does its thing and moves back a year it would probably have to get pushed out.

Re: Dune: Messiah predictions (rumoured December 2026)
They have to change the book quite a bit for this to be a Return of the King like success. They've already significantly changed Zendaya's character so that will help a little, but they need big action sequences too. I wonder how long until they spoil the And if people will even care all that much? Its a weird sub plot but the character is actually the one thing that connects all the books in the series.

Narnia and Star Wars did better in December. I’m not sure of other good comparisons at the moment. I’m sure it won’t hurt.

No. Nobody really cares about this world. Another film drops off a cliff, imo.

Re: Dune: Messiah predictions (rumoured December 2026)
I do think everything was sort of set up for Dune 2 to break out (dismal box office primed for a big breakout). At least I can see the next film do close to the first film give or take 5-10%. It doesn't feel like there will suddenly be more people that show up on this one.

2.5 years between the films. Don’t like waiting that long but I’m sure it will be worth it.
$90M OW / $280M Domestic

$90M OW / $280M Domestic Messiah is supposed to take place 12 years after the ending of Dune: Part Two, so I imagine they want to give Timothee time to bulk up a bit and look a bit older. It's not like the Harry Potter movies.

It's the whole of KJ. I didn't see Barbie, neither did KJ. I didn't see Five Nights at Freddy's, neither did KJ without previews. I didn't even see Inside Out 2, and neither did KJ (the closest prediction was $200m away!). Who saw Maverick's breakout? Don't remember anyone predicting that. And then there's Horizon. I'm just more honest about my lack of foresight.

Re: Dune: Messiah predictions (rumoured December 2026)
To be fair, people did mention Inside Out possibly winning the year last fall vs Deadpool 3, Joker.
The problem is box office got so bad and we all got nervous thinking everything was going to keep flopping. We underpredict when the box office is doing bad in the weeks prior and overpredict when the box office is doing strong in the weeks prior.
Barbie agreed though we were all so far off and Freddy's. I think having more female presence on this forum would allow us to better see how massively anticipated it was. Robbie being in two flops right before was an erraneous data point compared to the IP itself which for a Super Mario animated movie seemed clearer.
I have noticed signs of that from Wicked with audiences I've seen the trailer with. That seems like its going to be a massive breakout.

Re: Dune: Messiah predictions (rumoured December 2026)
I made "Pick a mid expectations movie to make 600 million+" thread last year (therefore matching Top Gun Maverick and Barbie surprises the year beforehand) and the poll options were: Furiosa, Gladiator 2, Wicked, Beetlejuice, Dune 2, Twisters, Elio (moved), Garfield, Ballerina (moved), IF, The Fall Guy and Lord of the Rings. So if it happens this year it would have to be one of Gladiator/Beetlejuice/Twisters/Wicked.

Re: Dune: Messiah predictions (rumoured December 2026)
I think what the box office has shown in the last couple years is that films live or die by their own merits, not because there is a reliable moviegoing crowd anymore. If you have a product that tons of people really want to see, there are no barriers to them seeing it, it will make stupid amounts of money. But if nobody cares, it could bomb to a shocking degree. Two high budget IP films with young buzzy female leads and these are the results: Furiosa's WW total to date is the same as Barbie's North American OW.
