Avatar - Re-release - Sept. 23, 2022 - How Will It Do?
How will the Avatar re-release do in Sept. before the sequel opens?
Hypothetically as well, if a re-release underwhelms, then what would Disney do?

It will do maybe a little better than the recent Godfather rerelease. I don't think that says anything about Avatar, just that it is free to watch on Disney Plus

A re-release underwhelming won't do anything...? Avatar 2 will still make bank.
That said I think it should do pretty well, especially if it gets Imax 3D screenings. I'd go check it out since I haven't seen it since release.

I'm more optimistic - Some $10m-20m for the remastered AVATAR domestic and $80m-$120m WW...

Flop. Enough people have Disney+ and can watch it on there. No need to go to a theatre.

Re: Avatar - Re-release - Sept. 23, 2022 - How Will It Do?
They're playing the 'only way to see it is on the big screen' card, but I don't think it will move the needle. It's only in cinemas for two weeks so I'll go with $1-2 million total, though I'm hoping for more. I watched the Extended Collector's Edition at home in 2020 and the 3D re-release last year at the cinema, and it more than holds up on both screens, so I kind of feel people don't need to pay the cinema a visit. Having said that, the box office is quiet until October, so it might make more than expected. Fingers crossed.

Re: Avatar - Re-release - Sept. 23, 2022 - How Will It Do?
It will do better than the Jaws, ET and Spider-Man re releases, but not by much. Maybe 10m if it really strikes into the nostalgic feel of 2009 seeing it on the big screen for the first time.
Are any of the shows in 3D? That was the main draw last time

It says it's in 3D and all formats.
I suppose its success will be tied to how excited people are in The Way of Water, and seeing the first as a recap for it. But again, I don't see much hype for the sequel...yet.

Can see it do $5m or so just because the marketplace is so desolate.

They took Avatar off Disney Plus lol. Seems kind of messed up to do that to me. Sets a precedent that they'll take stuff off Disney Plus if they feel like making you pay for it again.

That's a bit scummy, yes. That's why I don't really like these streaming subscription models. From a viewers perspective, all the control is with the platform. At least when you bought a DVD it was yours, and you could watch it anytime you wanted.

They're going to put it back on before Avatar 2 though. I can't say I blame them for taking it off during the re-release. If people don't want to pay to see it in a theater then they can just wait and watch it when it's back on. It's not like they didn't have plenty of time to watch it before then. I don't think this does that well but who knows. There's not much coming out for people to see. One thing's for sure. They would have made way more money releasing Hocus Pocus 2 to theaters.

For me, the sound is a determining factor for whether I'll make the trek to a theater. If I have a local theater playing it on IMAX with the latest digital sound technology, I'll check it out.

Re: Avatar - Re-release - Sept. 23, 2022 - How Will It Do?
I guess this weekend's re-release of No Way Home may show us what to expect with Avatar. What the More Fun Stuff Version has in extra footage buzz, Avatar will have in people wanting to revisit it to be prepared for The Way of Water. It's also not on Disney+, so with these two things coming together it might make a similar $8-$12 million total.

The 2pm show at the AMC DEL AMO had some 40-50 people and there was applause at the end...

Looks like mark66 was closest, though his range was massive. Surprisingly Rev wasn't close, hehe
