Thanks, Mitsuri. I do follow that page, but figured they may not have updated it yet. I have to imagine if they bumped the first-print run up to 2 million, they'd definitely release a statement since, I believe, it'd only be the third series to ever received a first-print run of 2 million or more. Guess we'll know if so in the next week.

Also, for anyone members or lurkers who may only have this particular thread saved or get here via the Japan Box Office/Box Office Bash forum, this whole sub-forum is being MOVED this weekend. Check out the link/thread here: viewtopic.php?f=74&t=88587

2.150.000 copies for JJK Volume 17 and Gege will take a break again next week.
https://twitter.com/WSJ_manga/status/14 ... 38048?s=20
Two weeks from now, we may find how the tug of war between JJK and KNY will turn out. On the same week, JJK releases a volume on Monday and the first episode of Mugen Train airs on Sunday. I guess KNY will have a stocking issue again, Shueisha has not announced any reprint schedule for the series yet.

Demon Slayer: Reprint Issues no Yaiba?

Thanks for the first-print numbers for JJK, by the way.

Anyone know if the first-print run for JJK #17 has been announced yet, by the way?

#16 got 1.5 million and sold 1.165 million (77.7%) in its first 3-days. #17 is releasing on a Monday, so it has a 7-day first week in store, so another 1.5 million first-print run may not be enough, or is going to leave the majority of stores super short/sold out before the weekend.

Actually, volume 15 got 1.5 million while 16 got 2 million. So it's only a minor increase for volume 17, which is fair, volume 16 took quite a few months if it's even crossed that mark at all by now (on its 7th week it was still at 1.85M).

2.1M is correct, though it's definitely not the third one. One Piece, KnY, Slam Dunk (2.5M), Dragon Ball and Dr. Slump (both 2.2M) for WSJ.

Kodansha had Kindaichi Case Files and AoT. Shogakugan had Conan hit 2M first print at one point in its run as well (volume 17).

That's about it, I think. There might be some that I forgot. NANA comes to mind as a candidate for having hit that but I'm not sure if a first print numer was released for it; if it was, I haven't seen it.

Post Re: Weekly Manga Sales 2021
A lot of people talk about the top 3 and their sales. But can was discuss if OP/MHA can overtake AOT? and Spyxfamily vs CSM?

For My hero academia if it keeps up its backlog at 100k+ for a month or so and the new volume sells 700k (Volume 31 did 660k in the first month August 4 ~ Sept 5) then i can see it finishing around 7.2M. One Piece is declining and if past volumes are anything to go by then it'll be out of the charts within couple of weeks, most likely ending at 6.8~6.9M.Attack on titan should be around 7M currently for reference. MHA would have its best yearly sales since ever and AOT the highest since a 5 years ago despite releasing only two volumes vs the usual three.

Chainsaw is looking to finish at about 5~5.1M. Spyxfamily is 4M~ or so and has a volume in Nov 4. which will have about 18 days of sales. Spyxfamily volume sales are at around 1.1-1.3M if we go by their last appearance on oricon.

If Spyxfamily volume was in october then i'd 100% bet on Spyxfamily taking it. but the volume is on nov and the date is very close so im not sure.

Post Re: Weekly Manga Sales 2021
2021 is a great year, indeed. Jujutsu Kaisen and Demon Slayer doing over 30 million (both earing spots in the all-time top 5 by year, slight chance to crack the top 3 all time). Tokyo Revengers doing over 25 million (6th biggest year all time).

But besides the craziness of the top three this year, there are many notable others as well that you covered. My Hero Academia likely doing over 7 million to earn its best year ever (very notable for a fairly long and established series now). Attack on Titan seeing a big bump to see a 5 year high above 7 million in its last year. One Piece is declining, but it's also releasing 3 volumes a year instead of 4 now, so ~7 million will probably become its standard for the future (about a 10% drop versus last year, which is fine) without that 4th volume to push it up to 8-10 million again.

Chainsaw Man doing over 5 million with just 10 volumes and no anime (yet). Assuming the anime delivers next year, it'll likely continue to see solid sales, especially if Part 2 of the manga starts to roll out (is it confirmed for 2022?). And Spy x Family possibly hitting 5 million as well, again, no anime with even fewer volumes. It, too, will probably see a strong 2022.

The only sort of slip this year (among the more popular series') was Kingdom I feel. The long awaited, and delayed, return of the anime was this year too, but had no impact (seemingly). Is it going to miss 5 million?

And rounding out the top 10 of 2021 will be Haikyuu!, I think, with around 4 million despite ending back in November of 2020 and no current anime. Or maybe Kaiju No. 8 can edge it out, but probably not. Either way, big year for it that is likely setting the stage for a major series in the next couple years.

So the Top 10 of 2021 will probably end up selling around 130-132 million. The Top 10 of 2020 sold 139,586,233 (Demon Slayer account for 59% of that). Not sure if all the hundreds of series' can make up that ~7-9 million or so difference (the JJK and DS books not included in their main series totals, like their fanbooks and JJK # 0, doing over 1/2 million each will help cut into that difference), but even if it doesn't, managing to come close to 2020 (all-time record) and becoming the second biggest year ever is incredible, especially given the state of the market for the second half of the last decade.

OP cannot overtake AoT. It will finish somewhere between 7.3M and 7.4M and OP would need to average about 90k per week for that to happen, which is not going to happen (last week was only 120k and 50k of it is from the new volume; with both its backlog normalizing and the new volume sales lowering thats a no go, it might even fall below that number next week let alone staying above it for the next 8).

MHA has a shot depending on how its backlog behaves in the next few weeks, seems hard though.

Yup a great second place and a good score for its collector edition I guess.
About DS I don't know if it'll do better than this for the next top 10 by series. Its anime release 1 day before the end of this week and there's many big releases that came out at last monday so I think it'll sells a bit less than last week between monday to Saturday... We'll see. We should see JjK behind DS for the next 2 weeks maybe, depend of the boost off course.

I still don't think DS has any chance. Any chance it had was these last few weeks and it still needs two more weeks to take over JJK by which time I assume the new volume will come over and it will be over.

Ouch, it's really a tough to decide the winner. Else, both are my favourite Manga.

I think it'll be very close between 1st and 2nd spot. Actually there's around 400k between JjK and DS and next week Jujutsu Kaisen should takes an advance of like 800k more so 1,2M ~. But after I really dunno... JjK doesn't sells much backlogs anymore and DS had a great boost with just the movie broadcast and announcement about its anime so season 2 (even that's Mugen Train part) must overtake the first few weeks of boost we're actually looking at. But yup maybe it'll decrease really fast and won't sells as much as I think during the last 7 weeks !

That's what I'm thinking as well before the anime DS didn't sell too much backlog the current boost is because of anime which will slow down soon. Jjk might see a similar boost for next 3-4 weeks with backlog as new issue comes in and brings in curiosity.

Don't forget the Jujutsu Kaisen movie. It probably won't have an impact on manga sales until the end of the month or early November, but it'll still likely cause some sort of bump before the year ends.

Granted, the movie will likely provide a bigger boost to Volume 0 which it's adapting but isn't counted towards the main series sales figures, but it'll probably benefit the other volumes as well.

But if JJK does like ~1.5 million this week, then it's probably going to be over regardless of the movie's impact in the coming weeks.

Yes JjK movie will bring new fans but I still don't know if a trailer will boost the franchise 1 month before it release.
For me season 2 of DS and JjK movie will have most of their impact for the next Oricon yearly sales. That's why I still expect that DS can be #1 another abd last time. ^^

Off course it's not really important... Be 2nd with 30M+ after a year and half after the end of the manga is still sooo impressive.

Does Oricon consider this number as the first week sales of JJK's volume 17?

Additionally, it is heartbreaking to see KNY's volume 23 barely returned to top 50 again :( .

Post Re: Weekly Manga Sales 2021
I don't get how a volume even getting enough of a boost to resurface to the top50 when the series is already so unbelievably big is "heartbreaking" in the slightest but sure I guess.

Also, next week will be much lower for KnY, which almost certainly assures JJK has won the year. Only way that doesnt happen now is if the tv broadcast of mugen train boosts even more than the movie one from last week and can allow it to crack 400k+ weeks average for the remaining 6 weeks of the year it'll get, which seems quite unlikely to me.
