Re: Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (INTL)
I honestly don't know. I don't even know if a theater count has been released. I'm hoping it's at least near (or over) 1,000 and similar to Funimation's previous widest releases (Dragon Ball Super: Broly and My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising). Sales look very encouraging though.
It seems that expectations are for an opening day above $5 million. Personally, I think that's a high bar given Broly did $7.04 million. Not impossible, it's just that Dragon Ball is far and away the most popular anime series in the U.S., so it'd be something if Demon Slayer could approach/match that opening day. But that said, both Dragon Ball Super: Broly and My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising were Wednesday openers. I doubt that had too much impact on their opening days since they'd be fanbase-driven, but a Friday opening day (with the addition of Thursday previews) could give Demon Slayer at least a small advantage.
Also, a little over 24 hours away from the first showings in the U.S.!

Thursday previews alone are gonna be around 5M from the looks of it, and pre-sales are pretty good even for saturday (close to friday). letsmaybeLP92 wrote: Oh nice, could this mean a surge to #1 or #2 in SK for the weekend? Issue was of course that COVID racked Europe hard (though with the UK release date announced don't be surprised if the rest of Europe that is still TBD follows suit with the same date)

Re: Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (INTL)
Well, the home video release for June is likely just Japan-only. It usually takes several months afterwards for home video releases to hit international markets.
Funimation is releasing it on digital in June, but I don't know how much of a presence they have overseas, regarding the streaming service and digital releases. I know there always seems to be issues (licensing) with different releases not being available in some regions, or being available in them at later dates, etc.
And Sony owns Funimation, so that's likely they they're handling the distribution in Russia.

Re: Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (INTL)
First post updated with all the new release dates. Most of the announced markets have release dates now. Looks like only the remaining markets in Europe are awaiting dates.
It's opening in at least 6 markets this weekend, but perhaps notably higher depending on which markets in both Central and Latin America it's opening in. I know many were awaiting firm release dates depending on their individual COVID situations.
And for the rest of the overall month, it's opening in at least 10 more markets, but again, perhaps noticeably more pending the status of the various Central and Latin America markets. Does anyone have firm release dates for the individual markets there beyond the umbrella April 22nd date?

I know there isn't a lot to show right now, which likely helped it get the theater count around 2,000, but that's a significant number regardless of the situation. Easily the highest for an anime film since the third Pokémon film in 2000. I'd like to contribute to the opening day/weekend, but Monday is the earliest I'll be able to catch it. And the theater I'm going to has also added additional showings. It's up to 7 on Friday and Sunday, and 9 on Saturday. On par with Mortal Kombat (2 higher on Sat. even). It only had 3 showings a day back when I reserved our seats about two weeks ago.

Re: Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (INTL - US Release This W
It'd be crazy if it's able to compete with Mortal Kombat this weekend, especially if it actually beat it.
And if it does so, I believe it'll be aiming for the opening weekend record for a foreign-language film in the U.S., which, unless I'm forgetting something obvious, is STILL Hero (2002). The early Pokémon films were only given an English-dub release in the U.S. I believe, so technically they wouldn't count unless you broaden the category to full-on foreign film release. Again, this is unless I'm missing something. And I sort of hope I am because while I know the U.S. is a weak market for foreign films, it's kinda sad if Hero has held the record all this time.

Wasn't Passion of the Christ a foreign language film as well? Okay it was still technically an American film but it was in Aramaic, Latin, and Hebrew and made $83,848,082 for its opening weekend.

Re: Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (INTL - US Release This W
I'm so ecstatic and been trying to curb my excitement. I've been telling my friends, history is being written today, a once in a lifetime event that who knows could be seen again. All the stars are aligned for this movie. No one would have thought a pandemic could happen causing movies to only reach $400+M from its usual Billion earnings...

More than language, I like to consider foreign productions as a comp. Pokemon being Japanese production, I consider those as #1 openers. DS will likely be 2nd. I am currently seeing $20-25M OW.

Re: Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (INTL - US Release This W
Alright, so previews this evening, opening day tomorrow!
What is everyone predicting? Mostly for the U.S., but the worldwide weekend could be fun to try to predict as well with Mexico, Spain, and some Central and Latin America markets.
(And I'll update the first post with the most recent numbers shared here later this evening.)

Re: Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (INTL)
Here's an update from this post I made last week about a bunch of Chicagoland theater showtimes through AMC. Not actually a lot of straight-up sellouts added (a few have even been redacted, maybe they were moved to a bigger screen?), but a LOT of added screenings. I assume that whenever a screening is down to only front row seats they just add a new one, just looking at the seating charts for a lot of not-sold-out ones. Sellouts in bold, dubbed screenings with asterisks, screenings added since last Thursday are underlined: AMC: AMC River East 21 Thursday - 7:15pm (Dolby), 7:30pm, 7:4pm*, 7:50pm* 8:00pm, 8:15pm*, 8:25pm* 8:30pm, 8:55pm, 9:00pm, 9:15pm*, 9:35pm, 9:50pm*, 9:55pm, 10:00pm (Dolby) Friday - 1:10pm, 1:45pm*, 2:30pm, 3:30pm, 4:00pm*, 4:45pm, 5:30pm*, 6:30pm*, 6:50pm, 7:45pm*, 8:30pm, 9:00pm*, 9:30pm, 10:00pm*, 10:30pm Saturday - 12:00pm, 12:30pm*, 1:10pm, 1:50pm*, 2:40pm, 3:30pm, 4:00pm, 4:45pm, 5:30pm*, 6:30pm*, 6:50pm, 7:45pm*, 8:30pm, 9:00pm*, 9:30pm, 10:30pm

I just love it when something so niche has such a big breakout, the kind that will probably require explainer articles from every news outlet having to explain why some anime film that's a continuation of a TV series that never had an official premiere here just had one of the best opening weekends of the entire pandemic.

Re: Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (INTL - US Release This W
The first show in Spain started 1h ago. According to the cinema's website, there are not many shows on this weekend (4-5 per day only). Therefore, box office revenue from Spain may not be significant. https://www.cinespalafox.com/cartelera/ ... inito.htmlP/s: From the trailer, it seems that the movie has a Spanish dubbed version with an old man voice for Rengoku

Would be hilarious if this does more than Mortal Kombat. Both opening over $15m+ would be nice to see.
