I could see this being a hit, but I have no idea how big. I believe it will all come down to how much general audiences care about The Shinning connection and the late marketing/reviews. I also wonder if Stephen King's name can push it a bit further considering this will be coming fresh off of the success of It: Chapter 2 and audiences could be left wanting more of this kind of movie. I'm with Magnus on this though in that it has a very wide range as far as gross goes.

Re: Doctor Sleep predictions
I think this will depend heavily on reviews. "The sequel to The Shining" is a strong selling point, but it also has the potential of being seen as unnecessary.

Re: Doctor Sleep predictions
At least horror is on a hot steak in recent years so that should only help.
This is another case of a book that I enjoyed, with an engrossing story. I get excited at the prospects of a film adaptation only to realize how few people read it. They are looking at this w/o the context of the book.

I kind of love the idea of Carrey playing the role and Nicholson doing the voice. I'm most interested to see how Jack is portrayed here. The movie itself has that "It'll hit all the marks except just no be that good" type of vibe.

Lol, seriously whatever this film comes up with is ruined by this. Truly simplistic but next wave editing.

There will be sneak previews on Wednesday the 30th. Still not sure why they didn’t just open it there.

Jim Carrey should 100% play a serial killer.

Note that the book isn't really the jump scare type.

Re: Doctor Sleep predictions
So this made $1.9 million in the UK this weekend, which seems like a pretty bad sign for its opening here - that's less than what Pet Semetary opened to earlier this year. Sub-$25 million opening incoming?

Re: Doctor Sleep predictions
It opened in 6th place in Italy and Portugal..., UK in 4th place...
Reviews are solid and the TC estimate is 3,800+. Can't see it missing $30m.

Wow... About halfway through I thought Carrey must have agreed to film this for them
There's definitely going to be some porn videos in the next 5 years perfectly recreating Scarlett Johannson and Emma Watson
I want to wait and see what this does first before I completely dismiss it, but it is looking like a pretty major missed opportunity considering the potential it had. A direct sequel to The Shinning should have had no problem opening to $50-$60M with the right amount of hype and marketing behind it, but I really feel as if Warner Bros dropped the ball on this one in both areas despite the solid reviews. A better release date wouldn't have hurt either.

I don’t really believe this is true. There were a number of big hits that had more buzz and much better WOM than horror movies usually get, but the under 30m openers are doing exactly the same business I would have expected in 2000-2010.

Re: Doctor Sleep predictions
There wasn’t really anything unique about it. ‘Dead is better’ sold pet semetary really well. ‘Play with us forever and ever’ worked but wasn’t really memorable. Technically it looked effective, but was just another horror movie.

Nobody wants a sequel to a masterpiece. There's no chance it's as good
