Re: Detective Pikachu predictions
Hm... I'm sure hype will build for this on release week but I'm not so sure on the huuuge breakout I was expecting. I think there's a possibility Endgame is #1 that weekend unless this does indeed go above 100m+.

And Endgame won’t be number one unless Pikachu went sub 65m, and the worst I see it doing is Deadpool 2 numbers.

Re: Detective Pikachu predictions
While this does indeed have its own fambase - it would have been better if it had a 3 Week gap to Endgame. It's likely this won't be No.1 on its OW but the gross afoul due string regardless.

Re: Detective Pikachu predictions
How much do people expect Endgame will be making that weekend? 150ish second weekend and 70ish third weekend sound right. Don’t know why Pikachu opens below that.

Re: Detective Pikachu predictions
The second week of May has always been TERRIBLE for Warner Bros and I don't know why they haven't learned yet. They always use it to schedule films that have a lot going for them but aren't quite surefire smashes and need a bit of care to really break out (Speed Racer, Poseidon, Dark Shadows, Troy, etc) but they obstinately put them right after what's usually the biggest film of the year.
This would've made a killing in March. Now it has to deal with what's perhaps the biggest film since Titanic in terms of admissions sucking up all the air. I could see it doing mid $70s at this point which is about half of what its potential was. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Re: Detective Pikachu predictions
Endgame will probably be at 75-90 for third weekend. (Record is TFA's 90m third weekend)
Hype should build but I think Endgame hype is so strong who knows if Pikachu will lose a lot of potential audience. But, could see a similar situation to JW and Inside Out where both did big business (and those 2 only had a week apart)

May Vs June does present a problem though I still feel overestimation on Pika Pika's opening here

Actually, The Great Gatsby broke out that year even though it opened one week after Iron Man 3.

Re: Detective Pikachu predictions
I'm surprised the new trailer for this didn't get a stronger reaction at my showing. Way more families were in the audience today, but I didn't hear any buzz afterwards unlike TLK.

What is there to like about TLK though?
Looks awful. Worse than Aladdin, and probably the worse Disney live adaptation yet.
None of the scenes work and unlike TJB there isn't a single human character to make up for the expressionless faces.

$1 billion+ worldwide guaranteed. $250m domestic minimum. $300m+ in Japan possible. China is a total wildcard. This will cut deeply into Avengers. I am not sure why people are so sure of this. Endgame will be in its 3rd weekend at that time, and the Pokemon crowd is not exactly the same as the Superhero crowd. Lol there's definitely audience overlap. I bet at least 75% of the adults who will see Pikachu will see Endgame this weekend. I disagree quite a bit. Pokemon (though I love it personally) is a kids property (similar to Pixar and Family movies). This is not as widespread appeal as you may think. BK wrote: What is there to like about TLK though?

Little cousins/nephews, etc? This is the most hyped family movie of the year. It will gross more than Beauty and the Beast.

51 on Metacritic......
Hopefully the RT score stays fresh.
I can't help but feel this won't come close to reaching its potential at this point.

I honestly don't think the reviews will matter, since they're not horrible. The Pokemon fanbase is HUGE. HUGE.

I'm still thinking 400 million grosser. The demo appeal for this is perfect, it should be huge with kids but doesn't really lose anything with adults with Deadpool voice and nostalgia for when you were kids

Re: Detective Pikachu predictions
Disappointing reviews seem lukewarm but ya, at least they aren't atrocious.
I'm hoping this picks up steam next week. I think the (stupid) push for Avengers spoilers can be open by Monday may help.

Re: Detective Pikachu predictions
70% on RT, not enough to help it but not enough to hurt it.
I would be shocked at just $50M tbh, I think $70M should be the minimum for this. But maybe Avengers is sucking up too much hype, not to mention there's definitely audience overlap and going to the movies is expensive nowadays with rising gas costs, ticket prices, dinner for the whole family (especially after a three hour movie), etc.

Re: Detective Pikachu predictions
It did need another week distance from Endgame really. But that's the problem with Disney dropping major tentpoles on s monthly basis. Doesn't leave much breathing room.
I think this should still do something like $70-80m OW with a $200-ish total. Would be great.

Re: Detective Pikachu predictions
This felt like it had way more buzz two months ago. I don't now maybe it really is because of Endgame or maybe its because the appeal of it was somewhat overestimated. I was sure this was going to go well over $100M after that second trailer, but here we are now not even sure that it will even hit $80M.
I'm still not convinced it only opens at $50M though.

Re: Detective Pikachu predictions
This will open to ~$65m. With Aladdin and Godzilla on its heels, legs will not be very kind but it should still finish over $200m.
