Aladdin predictions
Teaser being released tomorrow.
Has potential to break the Memorial Day weekend curse but let's see how the teaser is.
So much going on March-May. Captain Marvel, Dumbo, Avengers and Aladdin, will all of these really do as expected and at lesst be decent hits, or will something didappoint? ... they'll probably all be hits.

May is unusually busy next year, as is the March to May corridor.
I still cant fathom Disney releasing 3 live action remakes of their toons though.
Is Lion King really still being released next year?

Re: Aladdin predictions
Pretty sure it will disappoint. Too many things working against it (released in a cursed spot, sandwiched between big blockbusters, movies set in the Middle East being harder sells, Smith being closer to bo poison that to a draw,..). Also, BatB and Lion King are way more iconic than this.

Before the trailer my prediction is 275m-300m domestic & 675m-800m WW

Casting of Aladdin reminiscent of Alice and Cinderella - uninspiring.
Hey...Lily James was wonderful as Cinderella. Perfect choice.

The Lion King is supposedly 95% done.

I wouldn't say WAY more iconic, but certainly more iconic to an extent. It's weird considering how much bigger of a financial hit Aladdin was, and it received nearly as good reviews as Beauty and the Beast, and slightly better than The Lion King.

I still saw it and I didn't hate it, but she was an unknown and a vague lookalike and I just didn't get excited about it going in. I also had seen Kendrick as Cinderella in Into the Woods and already liked her as the character. It clearly could have been much bigger given how TJB, B&TB, and Alice did.
I had the same feeling about Fanning as Aurora and Mia as Alice. These unknown actors who vaguely look like their characters just don't conjure up all the magic of the original animated Disney characters. It didn't matter with Mowgli and Alice had Depp/Burton/etc. Aladdin is more like the Alice/Depp combo with Smith, albeit with a director that doesn't quite fit, and will have the fresh good will of B&TB to boost it.
Almost nothing to go on. Looks a bit shit actually. I cannot understand what the hell that voice even said.

Re: Aladdin predictions
As far as teasers go - that has to be one of the worst ever. It provided little and what it did show was poor. The voice over is silly and the music over dramatic for what we saw. Bad start.
I know it's not but it strikes me as fan-made. That's how bad it is.

I think Guy Richie is the biggest potential weak link for this film.
Of all the directors in the world with good track records and award winners, Disney chose him. That still blows my mind. Maybe I'm missing something about him. I mean who was the second choice?

Re: Aladdin predictions
To be fair, he signed on before King Arthur was released, so he only had one misstep on his record at that time. Two successful Sherlock movies were probably all Disney could see.
I liked the music in the trailer, but there is still so little to go on with this movie. The buzz from when they showed footage at CinemaCon earlier this year made it sound like huge a mess too. Who knows maybe they fixed some stuff, but I get the feeling this won't be very good and as much as I have enjoyed Guy Richie's past stuff he is a bad choice for these blockbusters, especially after King Arthur.

Re: Aladdin predictions
Does this mean Lion King is pushing to 2020...
Agree that Ritchie is the weak link. They really need to nail the genie. $240-$260m domestic

Re: Aladdin predictions
I'd say Lion King is almost certain to be pushed back to 2020. Expect an announcement soon.
It will leave a giant while in the second half of the summer but it only makes sense to move it.

Re: Aladdin predictions
Lion King is almost done, it's not being pushed back at all. Disney's game plan has always been these two in the same summer. They're not going to sit on a fully finished film for a year lol.
All these live action remakes have done well so there's no reason to think this will flop. The floor is probably $70m OW, and that's if it sucks.

This and Lion King releasing so close to each other is ridiculous... but they'll both make bank so whatever.

Re: Aladdin predictions
This has underperformance written all over it IMO.
Avengers and Pokemon will swallow up all the hype around that time, and they both appeal to a very similar audience to this. And Lion King coming out in the same summer will drain some of its hype as well. I could see it getting Solo'd. Shouldn't be an outright bomb though because surely international audiences will eat this up.
