Re: Early Friday Numbers (August 24)
$6m for CRA would be pretty much inline with The Help's increase on its second Friday (might be a tad lower), pretty damn good. And I don't think Cara's weekend multiplier will get better than Help to get it past $21m mark.

Re: Early Friday Numbers (August 24)
Warner Bros.’ Crazy Rich Asians is flat out doing amazing this weekend with an unprecedented $25.5M, which is an unbelievable -4% dip from its first weekend’s $26.5M.
Uhhhh holy shit

The difference being that this time a sequel is more likely than day and night.

Re: Early Friday Numbers (August 24)
There's a chance it still goes up this weekend. If not this weekend, could happen over Labor Day weekend with an inflated Sunday and holdover watercooler movies doing especially well that weekend.
$200 m + is a given that this stage. 5.81 multiplier to get there from a $25.5 m weekend. I still don't think it's peaked. That will happen next weekend.

It's completely going to fuck up MGKC's game for everyone. The highest prediction was $155m by biggestgeek, who is #1 already anyway. lol

Re: Early Friday Numbers (August 24)
Oh wow oh wow. I sensed this happening over the last week, a lot of people at work were excitedly talking about it. And I live in Vancouver, where people have a grudge against 'crazy rich Asians' for inflating housing prices so the fact that they were down with this movie means a lot.
Will this mean more Asians cast in lead roles and/or more Cinderella plotline films in exotic locations?

Re: Early Friday Numbers (August 24)
Searching is estimated by boxoffice.com to have a $300,000 weekend in 9 theaters. Think CRA is helping to propel this one a lot higher.

Re: Early Friday Numbers (August 24)
So Asians are in at the moment. It happens like this sometimes. Happened with Crouching Tiger back in 2000-01, then before that in around 96-97 with Jackie Chan. But I do not see it sticking. Americans go for things sometimes, but they never stick, and they go back to their bread and butter for the other 42 weeks of the year. A lot of money will be wasted by Asian producers in the next few years thinking they've cracked it because of CRA's success.

A lot of these movies are going to be made for China as much as US now anyways.

Re: Early Friday Numbers (August 24)
It's interesting that while Latinos are very much 'in' in the music world right now, they're a total non-factor in the film world. This is despite them being the biggest minority in North America.

Re: Early Friday Numbers (August 24)
I think Guillermo Del Toro and Alejandro González Iñárritu and Alfonso Cuarón might disagree with you there. To some degree, technical latinos have broken through. So there feels no need to award them as a minority with a few weeks of buzz surrounding a latino film.

I'd say no. But it is definitely an impressive limited opening for the film. Will bomb in wide release though.

Re: Early Friday Numbers (August 24)
Is “asians are in” really the lesson here though? Would it be making significantly less than Crazy Rich Persians or Crazy Rich Chileans? I think the public image should be “love transcends racial bounderies.” But really its a romantic comedy that will appeal to asian-americans who relate to it and to white people who feel cultural when they watch it. Kinda like Get Out works as a horror movie even if you remove the political themes- but said themes brought it to another level that wasn’t just “let’s cast more black leads in horror movies.”

Re: Early Friday Numbers (August 24)
Well, it helps that China is now a major economic power rivaling the US, so yes, I'd say the fact it's Asians (Chinese) makes a difference. Iranians definitely would not go do so well considering their relationship with the US. And Chile? lol.
