Re: Weekend Estimates (Upset)
Eighth Grade expanded to 33 theaters and grossed $794k for a PTA over $24,000. That was comparable to Moonlight's sophomore weekend gross. It looks set to be another $10m+ winner for A24.
Sorry to Bother You is expected to cross the $10m mark today.

Re: Weekend Estimates (Upset)
Mamma Mia went from 41 million to 37 million to 34 million. The Equalizer went from 30 million to 33 million, to 36 million. Looks like those walk-ups outdid the pre-sales.

Re: Weekend Estimates (Upset)
Underwhelming for Mamma Mia so the total will definitely not reach the first one.
Denzel shows yet again why he's the most reliable in the business. When The Rock slips up with a movie, you have Denzel come in to show how its done.

Re: Weekend Estimates (Upset)
Mamma Mia did fine. Not surprised it's opening weekend was frontloaded. EQ2 opening is impressive considering the lower expectations. It will be interesting to see what happens next weekend with Fallout. Should hit EQ2 hard, but Mamma Mia could counterprogram well. Also, very nice holds for Incredibles 2 and JW2.

Re: Weekend Estimates (Upset)
Maybe repeat viewings and positive word-of-mouth will help Mamma Mia! 2 rebound in terms of staying power. It should also do well with older audiences (the Exotic Marigold Hotel crowd) at weekday matinees.

Weekdays will be really strong and there's no direct competition coming for quite some time. Eighth Grade goes wide next weekend. Can't wait to see it.

Re: Weekend Estimates (Upset)
Pretty stunning upset. The early estimates had Mamma Mia winning by nearly $10m. You’d think the Sequelizer’s ridiculously early previews would have made it more frontloaded.
Ant-Man and The Wasp’s 44% drop is good considering it lost the Imax screens. Hopefully it can still beat Solo, but the tough competition will probably keep it a bit under.

Re: Weekend Estimates (Upset)
Wasn't The Equalizer 2 the original favourite for the weekend anyway? I don't see it as an upset.

Re: Weekend Estimates (Upset)
Movies had really good holds on Sunday. Both Mamma Mia and Equalizer went up. Equalizer is #1 with an impressive $36,015,000 and Mamma Mia had $34,952,180. Unfriended went up and opened to $3,653,035.

Re: Weekend Estimates (Upset)
It seems it won't be so easy for Rampage to reach $100 million. It was put back into 53 theaters last weekend, and it's still $700k away. Though it did get a decent $1,097 PTA, which compared to Bland Panther (which was put back into 126 theaters on its mission to reach $700 million, and got just a $162 PTA, now just $67k away) is great!.
I think they'll both reach their milestones eventually. It'll just take a bit more time.
