Re: Has Marvel Dethroned Star Wars as the Box Office Champ?
On a per movie basis, no, it hasn't surpassed Star Wars.
However, considering Marvel has been releasing 3 movies a year, and only seem to be gaining steam (outside of Doctor Strange, every movie in Phase 3 has made $300+), and it looking like back to back $700 million movies 2 months apart. Quite the accomplishment.

Marvel has cashed in on the rise of "binge watching" in regards to TV. By making multiple films a year, they start becoming a "tv series" and people will keep watching new "seasons" until one sucks.

That’s the question Chip. Which one will be the first since Thor Dark World to suck? Not just quality but also boxoffice

Which... obviously. But I don't think Ant-Man and the Wasp will be that good. I'm not overly thrilled with the potential villain in Captain Marvel.

I don't see a Marvel movie grossing under $200 million domestic any time soon. Ant Man & Wasp is going to get a big boost from BP and IW this year. It wouldn't surprise me to see it over $300 million domestically. This will take a bad movie coming out and then the NEXT film will have a chance to disappoint box office wise. I don't see it happening in one go.

Re: Has Marvel Dethroned Star Wars as the Box Office Champ?
The thing is it will take multiple suckers at this point for people to completely not care about this franchise. Even families are hooked in now and this becomes their annual two time movie going experience plus once they start their female superheroes and team-ups it will only increase in appeal. Also poor villains has never been a problem for MCU movies I think people go their have some fun and get their action dose which these movies provide in right amount.

I don't look at the all-time lists that often. Surprised to see that six of the top ten opening weekends are now Marvel. Two are Star Wars. The others are Jurassic World and Beauty and the Beast. So nine are Disney. Just crazy stats.

Re: Has Marvel Dethroned Star Wars as the Box Office Champ?
Weekend record progression is always fun to look at, especially when classified:
Marvel: 4 (2 avengers, 2 spiderman) Batman: 4 Star Wars: 4 (2 for episode 4, WAY after opening weekend... prequels would have done it multiple times with a Friday open) Jurassic: 3 Harry Potter: 2 Indiana Jones: 2 Superman: 2 Star Trek: 2 Jaws: 2 Pirates: 1 Ghostbusters: 1 Beverly Hills Cop: 1 Every Which Way But Loose: 1
Since 1989, it's been only 5 of these, with Pirates sneaking in. Other than Pirates you've got 4 franchises taking 14 of 15 consecutive records. Pirates would not be there had Sith opened on a Friday.

If you look at the single day record progression, since 1992, you add Menace, Sith, Shrek 2, New Moon

Didn't realize DMC broke the OW record I wasn't tracking BO back then. Really surprised cause I never saw that series being THIS popular.

Star Wars is still #1 in terms of public zeitgeist and even numbers wise. I've said elsewhere, Marvel is a strong #2.

Re: Has Marvel Dethroned Star Wars as the Box Office Champ?
Black Panther smoking The Last Jedi despite the latter's release date advantage is a bitter pill.
Maybe we'll see Episode 9 and IW2 retake the weekend record back to back. Then the race will be on to see what takes it after that.

Re: Has Marvel Dethroned Star Wars as the Box Office Champ?
Yeah, SW fans will still show up the but the film's troubles are widely known. If Solo's reviews aren't super, there could start to be noticeable erosion. It still costs money to buy a ticket and the movie going public has grown more perceptive to cash grabs.

But how long will this last? SW is still relatively fresh from 2015. Can it survive having $150m+ 4-day after say 10 years? That's the biggest achievement and I do think SW is still the BO champ but its definitely looses in staying relevant for too long.

That’s a pretty good four year stretch. Whether they can sustain the500m+ grossers is TBD but sustaining 300m+ grossers like MCU is not off the table st all. Its average is going down with almost each installment (it should have been $600m+ for four films) and after the first trilogy I can't see it posting these same amount of HUGE numbers. We will see if it lasts 10+ years as these movies are over-performing majorly in US and get 50% OS share from their WW total, so if the domestic numbers go down OS will mostly go down as well. There is also the point where MCU is releasing two movies per year now (even three sometimes) which I don't think SW can survive that if they start doing it for the long run.

Re: Has Marvel Dethroned Star Wars as the Box Office Champ?
Star Wars Overseas: Last Jedi - $712 mil Rogue One - $524 mil Force Awakens - $1,131 mil
Marvel Overseas: Infinity War - $715+ mil Black Panther - $645 mil Ragnarok - $539 mil Homecoming - $546 mil Guardians 2 - $474 mil
Removing TFA and IW, the averages are $618 mil for SW, and $551 mil for Marvel.

Re: Has Marvel Dethroned Star Wars as the Box Office Champ?
Chippy is taking average so the current comparison is correct. Though I agree its the increasing trend of MCU and decreasing trend of SW movies that needs to be watched. I think the average for SW will go down once Solo is released and that will continue with Ep 9 doing less than $700m OS.

Not right comparison. One franchise releases 3 films per year and the other (for now) just 1.

Re: Has Marvel Dethroned Star Wars as the Box Office Champ?
Lol Chippy, TFA, TLJ and RO are the high water mark for the SW brand overseas and the trend is now going to go down down down...
TLJ flopped in many developing markets including China, so its likely Episode 9 and RO will continue the trend.
Marvel brand post-IW will likely jump from its high levels.
