Bigger flop next year: Ready Player One vs Alita
What $200 million career ending debacle is going to be the bigger bomb next year: Ready Player One or Alita?
I compare them because not only are they clear red flags in the release schedule, but both are also based off niche fanboy properties that no one in the general public gives a rat's ass about, with creepy uncanny valley CGI humanoids and an unappealing, faded, murky look.

Re: Bigger flop next year: Ready Player One vs Alita
Easily Alita. Spielberg has seen his best days but he's still draws in more business than RR, BFG still outgrossed Ghost In the Shell, and that had a big star with a then-burgeoning rep as an action draw, while Alita has a rather unsettling main character.

Re: Bigger flop next year: Ready Player One vs Alita
Alita: Battle Angel will be the bigger flop, of course. But both will flop. Everyone seems to think Ready Player One will be another Minority Report ($200m+), but it won't be. That was propelled by the biggest star in the world at the time. Ready will be another A.I.: Artificial Intelligence ($125m).

Somehow I don’t think Ready Player One or Alita is going to ruin Spielberg, Cameron, or Rodriguez’s career.
But I don’t see Alita doing well.

Both will flop. I think Alita will do less domestically but Ready Player will do less WW.

Though I do recall MR being a bit of a disappointment at the time considering the star/director combo.

Re: Bigger flop next year: Ready Player One vs Alita
Ready Player One will probably make double what Alita makes. But I’m thinking like a $44/$115m type run and that’s not enough to kickstart a new franchise. So in terms of expectations, RPO will be worse.

Re: Bigger flop next year: Ready Player One vs Alita
They both look like torture. RPO should end up in the 120-130m range but I seriously wouldn't be surprised if both films missed 100m domestic based on the existing trailers.

Re: Bigger flop next year: Ready Player One vs Alita
Alita all the way. That film is going to be another Valerian and struggle breaking $40M domestic, but I'm getting the feeling RPO could be considered a disappointment too in terms of expectations and what's probably a pretty high budget. I still don't see the trailers connecting with general audiences and Spielberg just had a significant flop with The BFG, so his name is far from reliable than what it use to be be.
However, like I said before the initial fanboy rush could be enough to push it to either a solid or decent opening in the $40-$50M range, but if it's nothing special than it's going to be very frontloaded. It should at least cross $100M though.

What's with all the negativity?
If both movies turn out to be good, I wish them all the success in the world. if both movies turn out to be bad, I have no problem with them being flops.

Yeah ... but at the moment they look lame. We've got to go on what information we have (the trailers) and they were lame.

Re: Bigger flop next year: Ready Player One vs Alita
The thread talks about which one is the bigger flop and no one is really opposing it. So we should be asking why so much positivity for the failure of these movies

It's a good point Sparrow made. The "negativity" is here because the thread is negative.

Re: Bigger flop next year: Ready Player One vs Alita
Aliita will be the bigger flop financially but RP1 will flop harder in terms of hype/expectations.

Re: Bigger flop next year: Ready Player One vs Alita
Whilst both look a little way from done, Ready Player One has more going for it.
Alita's trailer was needlessly creepy, used very generic lines of dialogue, and just doesn't sell itself well, if there is even anything there to sell. It is almost an instant reminder of movies like Valerian and Jupiter Ascending- that is selling a convoluted story that has not much else.
Ready Player One could be epic. I trust in Spielberg.

Re: Bigger flop next year: Ready Player One vs Alita
It will be Alita: Battle Angel, obviously. But I think A Wrinkle in Time might trump them both for the biggest flop of the year.
