Thoughts on 2000-2009 musical identity?
Growing up I always felt like 70s, 80s, 90s music was obviously identifiable, but trying to put 00-09 in a box was impossible. But perhaps the farther you get away from it the more an identity forms.
For example hip hop is now entering a mumble rap phase. The 90s were gangster rap. So because its neither of the two, does 00-09 hip hop become outdated to future generations and the sound everyone identifies the decade with like 70s rock and 80s pop? 90s and present hip hop is both abrasive and not very mom friendly, the 00s version is probably the most emotionally sentimental and crosses over to pop well. Rappers like Eminem and Kanye lead the way
Distance has also made one realize the rock/alt acts of the 00s had their own unique thing too. It was not a bad era compared to now when you consider Coldplay, The Whites Strips, The Killers, The Strokes, Green Day, Blink 182 style, U2 and RHCP still relevant. But will it matter at all or will hip hop and pop wipe out everyone's memories of it?

its showing that, as with previous generations, the rock will live on while most of the rest fades away. The Killers are more popular now than when they were actually charting and will cruise into the Hall of Fame.

In the 80s for example both the more synthy pop (with cheesy music videos) and the hair metal rock feel like they belong to that era. In the 90s grunge is an era along with boybands and gangster rap. 70s rock has its own sound as does disco. So what are eras in 2000-2009 or 2010-2017? As you probably don't remember 00-09 as well, what are the artists you are most familiar with? Which artists or songs do you feel are classics enough that they still matter to your generation?

The culmination of the rise of the female pop star started by Madonna in the early 80's. All of a sudden we had Rihanna, Beyoncé, Avril Lavigne, Natasha Bedingfield, P!nk, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Kelly Clarkson, etc, The most iconic successful bands of the 2000's are Maroon 5 and especially The Black Eyed Peas.

Isn't Lady Gaga more in the 2010-2019 era? I never heard of her back in the 2000-09 decade.

So?
She led the the teen pop era in the early 00's then morphed and ended up giving birth to the fucking electropop era with her masterpiece Blackout that defined the sound that dominated the airwaves by late 00's.

The decade saw the rise of YouTube and Hip Pop (mainstream Hip Hop). You could call it the Hip Pop Tube Era.
