Re: China Box Office
It's going to get close at this rate!
Estimate revised to $38m and a $345m cume. This is just crazy. It'll be ahead of Fast & Furious 8 by the end of the weekend and will surely have a chance at challenging The Mermaid for the biggest film ever in China (which the government would LOVE because this is a 100% Chinese film as opposed to The Mermaid which is a HK co-production).

Re: China Box Office
The estimate went from $29m to $38m? Definitely seems like some government propaganda going on here.

Re: China Box Office
The total collection till now is a bit suspicious for WW2 and I think it might turn out to be a bigger fraud case than IP MAN 3 http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/c ... n-3-876963 In another update, it's all set to cross $400 M today and by another week, it'll officially surpass Beauty and the beast to become the highest grossing domestic hit :#

Re: China Box Office
The amount of increase everyday is really suspicious. Are they not learning that the late-night sellouts of the movie have been bigger than they are expecting, almost every day?

Re: China Box Office
Wu Kong strangely dropped out of the top ten. But yesterday Despicable Me 3 made it to $150m.

Re: China Box Office
I get that they would want to report less money, but more? Don't they have to pay more taxes on tickets that were never sold etc? Isn't that a bigger expense than the gain from bragging rights?

Re: China Box Office
Well, that can easily be offset by a higher sale price to other territories, TV networks, etc. But that's not who I see as the fraudsters anyway. It would be SAPPRFT in some way influencing these numbers in order to justify their foreign blackout and to prove that China is #1. You cannot underestimate the importance of this in the country that China is today. It is so unbelievably fragile but still believes it is the best country in the world, so it needs to have champions in every aspect, and when it cannot be crowned winners even in its own country then it will fake a win and claim it as real.

That makes sense. So I guess we can expect this movie to miraculously cruise past TFA's $937m gross. Whether it's real or not...very questionable.

Re: China Box Office
Its legs even after 11 days makes its gross already questionable. This market just does not have the ability for films to sustain this amount of interest for this long (especially for films that are not once-in-a-lifetime Avatar-esque experiences). If it managed to out-gross The Force Awakens (which it won't), then surely anyone with a brain would also agree that it's a fake gross.

Re: China Box Office
Anyway, its Sunday was $63m -- Sunday is the biggest day in Chinese box office -- and its cume now stands at $469m. That'll probably increase to $475m before the end of the day!
Its current second weekend gross is $161.66m. The Force Awakens was $149m.

Re: China Box Office
Definitely seems like they are cooking the books big time. Not really too much different from the Chinese economy in general, like when they built all those empty cities. Kinda sad they feel the need to do this with the box office. It's really NOT that important in the grand scheme of things.

The 10:35 AM showing at my local cinema this morning, a smaller room with 58 seats is 40% filled already, 2 hours before the film starts, on a Monday! I think among a certain group of the population the film is simply very popular.

Re: China Box Office
Being a Monday doesn't mean much since it is the summer holidays and as you know in China a lot of people do not work, so there are plenty of people that COULD attend if they wanted.

Re: China Box Office
It would have to be some impressively calculated, determined effort by the government to fraudulently buy or claim seats in every cinema in China and not have people question it or have it leak out when the cinemas are actually empty.

Not saying they are empty. I'm sure it's doing well overall. Just don't buy the idea that this thing opened huge and is grossing even more in the second weekend than the first.

Re: China Box Office
Yeah, it is hard to believe, but with no real evidence I guess we have to believe it for now. I mean, China does have the population to produce these numbers, and it is a word-of-mouth hit, so who knows.

Indeed, the population is gigantic. If the numbers are legit, then that is simply a jawdropping run across the board.

It hasn't changed! Looks like they're pretty good at doing Sunday numbers.

Re: China Box Office
That's just HUGE if true but is the WoM THAT good on WW2 that it's increasing from last weekend. I don't remember any movie doing that before in China specially at this scale.

Re: China Box Office
So it has now topped $500m with a $33m twelfth day. It will become the highest-grossing film in China ever in just 13 days.

Re: China Box Office
So, Wolf Warriors 2 is now the highest-grossing film in China. Tuesday it grossed another $33m, and now stands at $540m, which is $15m ahead of The Mermaid. It does not seem to be slowing down any time soon, so $700m looks to be on the cards, which will mean a worldwide total of more than Logan, and if all goes well even more than Wonder Woman ... and with the majority of its gross coming from just one country. This is just insane.

Is there really any concrete evidence that they may be cooking the books or is it all just inference at this point?

Re: China Box Office
It has a 9.7 rating on the ticketing app I just checked. I also checked half-a-dozen showings tonight and they are all 50% full. At this point, it is hard to doubt the numbers, but it is just too convenient that makes it seem deceptive.

AVATAR grossed $760M domestically, WW2 will easily surpass that, doesn't matter if it's legit or not
