But the film will have such long staying power, particularly with its premium formats. And being the first real BP contender will help bring people in. I know 1D fans are crazy but that's a fuckton of social media conversations. Norm for big blockbusters is $1m for very 8-10k tweets. Suicide Squad is worse ratio I know of, where 760,000 tweets lead to $65m opening day. If Dunkirk does 500,000 tweets opening day, can't see under $25m.

I love seeing all the positive reviews for this as that will definitely bring out older audiences, but it is still facing significant competition with Apes which will also be skewing older. I do believe the shorter running time and it not being such a bleak film will definitely help with legs though.

Re: Dunkirk 225m+ Club - NOLAN IS GOD
https://www.apnews.com/0585e4e0cf2346b7 ... pher-NolanQuote: Nolan is cinema’s great watchmaker: a filmmaker of Swiss precision capable of bending and shaping time to suit his grandiose, metronomed movies. Having already reversed time (“Memento”) and warped its fabric (“Interstellar”), Nolan set out to accomplish something different with “Dunkirk,” a movie that crosscuts three story lines (on land, sea and sky) from three different chronologies (one week, one day, one hour) during the famous evacuation.
“I wanted to experiment with a new rhythm,” said Nolan in a recent interview. “What I wanted to do was take what I call the snowballing effect of the third act of my other films, where parallel story lines start to be more than the sum of their parts, and I wanted to try to make the entire film that way, and strip the film of conventional theatrics.”
When “Dunkirk” hits theaters next Friday, audiences will find a landmark war film but not a traditional one. Shot almost entirely with 70mm IMAX cameras from Nolan’s atypically spare 76-page script, “Dunkirk” is an often wordless, almost purely cinematic experience of dogfights in the air and close scrapes at sea. It’s an all-out assault — of tracking shots and montage — by one of the movies’ most maximal filmmakers.

Well if that doesn't get people excited, I don't know what will. I am fucking pumped after reading that.

Multiple people claiming that this is Nolans true masterpiece has me thinking the potential here is ENDLESS. It could be top 10 come oscar season still.

Re: Dunkirk 225m+ Club - NOLAN IS GOD
Is all this positivity solely based on the few sanctioned comments made by Nolanites about an early screening? Have y'all learned nothing about modern film promotion? Of course, it's possible that Dunkirk is actually a good movie (I honestly hope it is, because I'm going to watch it regardless, and I don't want to waste my time on another bad Nolan misfire), but there's no way to tell yet based on the unreliability of the currently available information.

Stephanie Zacharek has hated every Nolan movie including TDK. She is praising Dunkirk. She said Dunkirk is Nolan's "only film" to her, meaning she has hated his other work that much. Sasha Stone hated Interstellar and loves Dunkirk. Kris Tapley went from saying before he saw Dunkirk that he expected to rank it in the bottom half of Nolan's filmography to now saying after he actually saw it that it might be Nolan's masterpiece. David Ehrlich said TDKR is worse than Batman & Robin. He claimed that the hype on Twitter for Dunkirk is underselling how good the film is.

I'm glad to hear that people who haven't liked Noland overrated flicks (Batman movies, Interstellar, The inception) liking this one. I still miss what Nolan promised with his best movie so far - Memento.

When I wrote my comment I originally included The Prestige. But then I realized Memento is by far the best Nolan movie IMHO and The Prestige doesn't quite come there for me. The thing that impresses me the most is that even if you watch the cut that plays in normal time (which is an option on DVD), it's still a great movie - so while the gimmick is certainly phenomenal (both in storytelling and editing) it's really not what makes the movie great. But yes, those two are easily his strongest works.

Did I join before? If not, I'm definitely in. Thinking this is looking at a 6.0+ multiplier run.

This one is dangerously close to getting into overshoot territory. It will be a solid, well-reviewed film with good legs but it's still a WWII movie.

Can't imagine any reason for the legs being that long. I'm pretty sure the last non Christmas/Oscar season wide release to have legs like that was Frozen.

Re: Dunkirk 225m+ Club - NOLAN IS GOD
Starting off with a 100 on metacritic after five reviews. It's definitely going to be the most critically well-received Nolan film to date.
edit: Still 100 with 10 reviews

Re: Dunkirk 225m+ Club - NOLAN IS GOD
Alonso Duralde's review of Interstellar was 50/100 on MC. Dunkirk? 100/100. If that is the kind of change in overall critical reception we are going to see, then there is a pretty good chance it's going above TDK's 82 on MC.
