It's too bad Your Name isn't being tracked anymore. I really wanted to see if it managed to cross ¥25 billion yet. They announced the home release pretty early in my opinion.

It's down to 5 theaters in its 42nd week, playing in 2/9 regions and 5/47 prefectures as of today. It's losing 1 of those locations on Friday (Aichi), going down to 4 theaters next week:

Kanto: Tokyo - Ikebukuro Cinema (1 showing a day) / END DATE: TBD
Kanagawa: Kawasaki - Cinecitta (1 showing a day) / END DATE: TBD
Nagano: Saku - SM Cinema (1 showing a day) / END DATE: TBD
Aichi: Nagoya - Aeon Cinema Nagoya Chaya (1 showing a day) / END DATE: 6/16
Tokushima: Ufotable Cinema (1 showing a day) / END DATE: TBD

I could count the daily admissions from 4/5 of these theaters, if you really want me to, until it leaves them. Cinecitta is one of the five busiest theaters in the country, so it could still be playing there after it's released on home video next month and celebrate a full year in theatrical release.

Thanks for the update, Corpse. If it's not too much work, it would be interesting to know how much it's making weekly at this point. I'm really just curious how close it is to ¥25 billion now (or if it has surpassed it already), but I guess we won't know for sure until its run has officially concluded.

Happy for BatB even though it was dethroned this weekend. Great for the openers I believe.

Corpse will these two continue at top for the coming weekend or is there a chance of BatB regaining #1 again?

I was just reading the international weekend report from Screen Daily, when I saw this:

Quote:
Japan is the top holdover at number four in week seven on $426,000, down 15% for $35.1m. It is the highest grossing of all the Fast And Furious films in Japan.

Is that the correct number and drop for Fate of the Furious? I'm wondering how they determined its #4 ranking when it's not even in the Top 10 anymore.

Not much more could be wrong about Screen Daily's (or Universal's?) report there... The only true statement is that it's the highest-grossing film in the Furious series in Japan.

The Fate of the Furious fell out of the Top 10, ranking 13th over its seventh weekend earning ¥37,900,500 ($344,000) -- down 32% compared to last weekend.

Who knows how they came up with their incorrect weekend gross and ranking.

At the moment, it's very hard to say which film will be #1 this upcoming weekend: Confessions of a Murderer could repeat (if drops across the board are normal); Hirugao: Love Affairs in the Afternoon may rise to the top with a surprise hold (due to its strong audience reception); or Beauty and the Beast could regain the top spot if it has another sub-10% drop.

But that's not all; director Takashi Shimizu's Innocent Curse could debut atop the box office. Horror films have limited appeal/potential at the box office, but the #1 spot could be obtained with a gross around ¥250 million, or less, this upcoming weekend and that's doable.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is also opening, but I doubt it does much and will likely barely make the Top 5.

As expected Spidey and Pirates are Top 2. I completely forgot but is Transformers a big franchise in Japan? I don't remember it being one. Nice to see JW2 in the mix.

I thought Despicable Me 3 would be higher. Any predictions on whether it will be over or under Minions?

The Transformers franchise does pretty well in Japan, but it's not a blockbuster series. I'm thinking the latest film will do around ¥2.5 billion ($25 million).

I don't believe it'll match Minions; it was the first ever non-Disney, imported animated film to exceed ¥5 billion, and the actual minion characters themselves are why it was so successful. I don't know why, but Japanese audiences (at least children/families) have taken a liking to them, when they typically don't go for such animation.

That said, Despicable Me 2 saw a nice bump over Despicable Me, and Illumination's popularity has really grown in the market as well (surprisingly), so I expect Despicable Me 3 to increase over its predecessor. The third film has an excellent release date, and it'll likely earn at least ¥3 billion ($30 million) in my opinion.

It's another very tough weekend to call what film will come out on top:

>Confessions of a Murderer is seeking to retain its position on top; meanwhile, Beauty and the Beast is looking to reclaim the #1 spot (and will exceed $100 million over the weekend, too). Based on pre-sales and morning/afternoon ticket sales, it's too close to say which will earn the gold this weekend, so we've gotta wait and see how the weekend plays out. And they may not be alone in their attempt to take the #1 spot...

>The Irregular at Magic High School: The Girl Who Calls the Stars, based on the light-novels and anime, could be the dark horse to win this weekend. It has very strong pre-sales representing ~28% of its available first day admissions, so it could reach a 50% sell-through rate today. The problem is that it's only playing on 59 screens, so it's limited in its potential. However, if it delivers big today, which appears to be the case, and achieves a good Sunday... it could be a #1 contender since its avg. ticket price is likely to be very high.

>Innocent Curse is the latest film from director Takashi Shimizu, and is heading for a modest debut that's in-line with most high-profile horror films.

>King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is looking to disappoint with a debut around ¥100 million, or may very well bomb if it misses that mark which is possible. Nothing too surprising here, though, given the reviews, poor marketing, and general lack of interest.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Weekend Forecast (06/17-18)
Saturday Report:

>Confessions of a Murderer was down just 25% compared to last Saturday, giving it a strong advantage to repeat atop the box office for a second weekend. Warner Bros. will be very pleased since the film is looking to be their biggest release so far in 2017, with it currently on track to out-gross Kong: Skull Island.

>Beauty and the Beast held very well, down 27% from last Saturday, but it's not quite good enough to reclaim the #1 spot in its ninth weekend unless it delivers a remarkable Sunday performance.

>The Irregular at Magic High School: The Girl Who Calls the Stars sold ~52% of its available tickets on Saturday, and while I'm sure its avg. ticket price will be very high, the strong holds from the holdovers will prevent any chance of a surprise #1 debut. Still, it could definitely do ¥150 million+ ($1.5 million), which would be very impressive given the screen count of just 59.

>Innocent Curse got off to an expected so-so start and is eyeing a debut around ¥150 million ($1.3 million), quite standard for a higher profile horror release.

>King Arthur: Legend of the Sword bombed, missing the Top 5, and will likely miss ¥100 million (sub-$1 million) over the weekend.

09 (08) ¥43,000,000 ($390,000), -41%, ¥475,000,000 ($4.3 million), Flower and Sword (Toei) WK3

>Confessions of a Murderer delivered a great second weekend hold, and secured its position atop the box office for a second weekend. The film will soon catch up with Kong: Skull Island, and another week or two of strong holds will probably result it surpassing Kong to become Warner Bros.' biggest film of 2017 so far.

>Beauty and the Beast held very well in its ninth weekend, but was unable to reclaim the #1 position. Its ninth weekend, however, is only the 15th time (since at least 2000) a film has earned over ¥200 million, and based on estimates, it's the 12th biggest ninth weekend of all-time as well. Very impressive.

The film has also overtaken Alice in Wonderland at the same point in release, and will become Disney's highest-grossing live action film in Japan in two or three weeks as it aims for a total a bit above ¥12 billion (~$110 million).

>The Irregular at Magic High School: The Girl Who Calls the Stars sold out of an impressive 42% of its available weekend admissions, and since it's likely to have a very high avg. ticket price, likely managed a Top 5 debut despite playing on just 59 screens.

>Innocent Curse is the latest film from director Takashi Shimizu, is estimated to have opened with a standard debut for a high-profile film in the horror genre.

>King Arthur: Legend of the Sword bombed with a debut below ¥100 million, but at least Warner Bros. has Confessions to rely on this month. Nothing too surprising here, though, given the reviews, poor marketing, and general lack of interest.

This June actually hasn't been too bad. I doubt it's the weakest month this year.

>Confessions of a Murderer delivered an excellent second weekend hold and achieved a second-consecutive week atop the box office, selling a further 180,154 admissions. The film is on track for a total around ¥2 billion ($20 million), which will be enough to surpass Kong: Skull Island to become Warner Bros.' biggest film of 2017 so far.

>Beauty and the Beast held very well in its ninth weekend, but was unable to reclaim the #1 position. Its ninth weekend, however, is only the 15th time (since at least 2000) that a film has earned over ¥200 million; also, it's the 12th biggest ninth weekend of all-time. Disney's latest live-action iteration has also overtaken Alice in Wonderland at the same point in their respective releases, and will become Disney's highest-grossing live action film in Japan in two or three weeks. It's aiming for a total between ¥12.0-12.5 billion (~$110 million), which is enough for a spot on the All-Time Top 20 list.

>The Irregular at Magic High School: The Girl Who Summons Stars sold over 40% of its available weekend admissions, selling 106,796 tickets over the weekend on just 59 screens. This is certainly one of the more impressive debuts of 2017 so far, given the limited release, and continues Aniplex's streak of successful anime films.

>Innocent Curse is the latest film from director Takashi Shimizu, selling a decent 120,436 admissions on 251 screens in its debut. While the opening is the definition of mediocre, it's fairly good for a horror film and I doubt anyone is too disappointing by its performance.

>King Arthur: Legend of the Sword bombed with a debut below ¥100 million, selling only 62,304 admissions across 394 screens over the weekend. Nothing too surprising here, though, given the reviews, poor marketing, and general lack of interest.
