Sin City for the second time would be a very good choice over AH.

Yes, certainly. I'm not even sure I'll ever see AH on DVD. I hated the TCM, and that seemed to have stronger WOM.

I hated TCM too. AH is even worse. Last weekend was good. I saw Sin City and Sahara. I liked them both.

This theater does well only for the 7 to 10 pm shows Fri & Sat and during the day on Sat/Sun.

Your kidding me?? :-k This is clearly better than any horror movie we've had in a year.. It sure is a hell of alot better than the RING and the Grudge.. That much is certain..

I was expecting a good scary movie too. The biggest problem is that the movie is not scary. Who would have thought White noise would be a better horror movie than The Ring 2 and Amityville Horror.

Yeah, too bad there not and Amityville is clearly better than both RING II and WHITE NOISE of which I love.. I can't believe your saying this.. I guess what scares a teen is entirely different than adults, but the RING II or even the RING sucked massive balls worse than Amityville which was excellent..

I liked White Noise, which had a unique concept and was well made. That is the only horror movie I have liked this year. The rest have been one disappointment after another. I am surprised they did not make AH scary. I don't know why it got a R rating. May be for her bare back :-k

Any way, BKB, last saturday night there was this group on radio (1470 AM, Peoria, 9:30 pm) which was actually playing some recorded EVP.

The Amityville Horror
AMC OakView 24 (Star Wars tickets! Yay!)
3:00 p.m. -- 500 seat theater
About 7% full (somewhere between 5 and 10%)

Trailers:

The Island (no response)
Into the Blue (no response)
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (laughs)
Batman Begins (no response)

Film:

Better than the original, though it's very uneven. Ryan Reynolds is the star of the show and puts in some good work. It relies mostly on "jump" scares, and a few caught me by surprise -- I didn't feel embarassed for the audience, like I did during Boogeyman. Platinum Dunes is now two for two, though this isn't as good as 2003's Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Still, a good horror film that's miles ahead of crap like The Grudge and Boogeyman. B

I'm really surprised at how Ryan Reynolds really pulled it off and moved passed his Van Wilder typecasting.. He did good.. However, I really don't understand how your saying it's uneven.. What was so uneven about it?? :-k The torture chamber George Lutz found behind that wall was very impressive and the Ghostly images that randomly showed up and the babysitter scene were classic.. I sense this movie is gonna have better legs than your average horror movie..

The reports from HSX didn't sound too encouraging, but nothing in Yahoo reviews suggested a less than 8M opening.

I only found one sell-out tonight, which I'm not sure bodes well for my $28M prediction. Oh, well.

At least *everyone's* going to get burned if this thing does $20M or less.

Though I am not working today, but I read that my theater sold out the 8:30, the 9:25, and the 10:15 show. Let's see how the 11:25 and 12:00 shows do.

The Amityville Horror
Regal Hacienda Crossing Stadium
5:55 p.m
350 Seats - Around 80-90 people ( eh, this is a farely popular theater so its not that good, though business didnt seem great for anything else either )

Film:

Well it was decent, I thought it was better then TCM Remake ( didnt like it much ) It really didnt follow the book at all for what I can remember, and I wish it had, it would've made for a better movie, plus it feels like it rips off 4-5 movies throughout. It had some good scares here and there, though some scares were pretty cheap, the actors did a good job, not much complaining in that department. All in all it was pretty fast paced ( which is good and bad ) and for the most part pretty fun to watch. Dont expect anything out of the ordinary quality wise from Amityville and you wont be too dissapointed.

Grade - B-

From what I've heard, there haven't been many sell outs. One of my friends saw it at 9:15 and said that there wasn't many people there and when I called the big mall, they said the biggest show was about 70% full.

The Amityville Horror
12:00AM, 500 seats, 85% Full (I'm surprised it wasn't sold out)

Trailers
Stealth
Mindhunters
House of Wax
The Skeleton Key
Kingdom of Heaven
Into the Blue

Movie
The Amityville Horror is the best horror movie I've seen since, well, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003). Finally, a horror movie that actually *tries* to scare you. In a few scenes, infact, it might actually succeed. There's some really freaky moments, and some bone-chilling imagery. Great, great performances. Yes, even by Ryan Reynolds. I liked how when the scares starting coming, they didn't stop. I've never seen the original, but I'm sure it can't possibly be better than this. The Amityville Horror kicked ass, and was far better than any other horror movie this year. A

Damn, nobody's theaters seem to be showing the trailer for HIGH TENSION in front of it. At least none that posted here anyway.

The only movies I've seen the HIGH TENSION trailer in front of were SAW and DIARY OF A MAD BLACK WOMAN. Two really big hits, so maybe people will remember it?

Well, the trailer is definitely memorable ;). That's cool that the trailer was in front of MAD BLACK WOMAN, since they are really different movies, even if they are from the same studio. And I saw the trailer in front of SAW as well. Some have seen it in front of AMITYVILLE. I know it will be shown in front of CRASH, since that is an "R" rated movie from Lions Gate opening about a month before HIGH TENSION is released.

Look at Me:

7:00 show in a pretty large theatre. There were around 150 people probably.

Really awesome film. Check it out if you get a chance.

The Amityville Horror

100% full in 160 seat screen at 9:45 PM (similar to the TCM remake in my area). The showing beforehand also appeared to be extremly full when it let out.

Trailers (no reaction for anything):

Into The Blue
Stealth
War Of The Worlds
Kingdom Of Heaven
House Of Wax
The Skeleton Key
Mindhunters

Movie:

What do you get when you take one of the best fourty five minutes in modern horror history and mix it with one of the worst fourty five minutes in modern horror history? You get The Amityville Horror remake, my friends. This film is wildly inconsistent, and ultimately pretty damn disappointing by the time the closing credits roll on the screen. I guess we'll start with the good, which was the entire opening fourty five minutes, or as I like to call it - everything that happened before the priest character was introduced. The film begins with a literal bang, in one of the best opening sequences i've seen in a film in quite some time. The films really builds off that opening surge of momentum. Everything is just hitting on all cylinders. The character development of the Lutz family is extremely good for a horror film, the acting by all involved (even Reynolds) is damn good, the direction is top of the line, and there are some pant-shittingly scary set peices that happen to include heapin' helpins of the red stuff (the bathroom scene with the kid brushing his teeth and the closet scene with the babysitter are two stand outs that will have you up later than you want to be at night). Then, all of the sudden, everything just stops. It's quite shocking how the film just falls completely off the tracks once the character of the priest is introduced. You can really tell that the filmmakers tried way too hard to get the film extremely scary too early and just plain ol' ran out of ideas to cap the film off with. A golden rule I always like to use with horror films is, once you have to rely on bugs to be scary for you, you've really lost your way. And that ending. Oh, god - that ending! I was stuck asking myself when the film stopped being a horror film and turned into one of "thrillers" you see so often on the Lifetime network. Here's the checklist:

Crazy husband chasing helpess wife and kids all over the house (including highly improbable roof sequence) - CHECK
Amazingly adept 12 year old saves the day numerous times - CHECK
Give us a taste of the ending everybody wants to see and rip it away with the "it was all just a dream/halucination" cliche - CHECK

With that said, there were some nice things about the ending. The Ketcham character was very interesting, and the atrocities commited to the Native Americans were deeply disturbing and provided some horrific imagery that Clive Barker would have been proud of, but it all wasn't enough to save the ending.

I really wanted to like this movie. Nay - I wanted to love this movie, and the most frustrating thing about it is the first fourty five minutes completely delivered on everything that I was hoping for and them some. Andrew Douglas seems like an incredibly gifted filmmaker, and he was on the verge of delivering one of the best modern horror films around. He just had too many great ideas too quickly, and the film collapsed in on itself. I give The Amityville Horror a C+.
