I wonder if Jack Sparrow still thinks Fate of the Furious will miss $220/$225 million.

Fox might try to scramble and make up a bigger number then subtract the added bonus on Monday. If Alien beats Guardians barely with actuals and then has a huge drop on Monday I'm pretty sure it's because Fox fudged the numbers.

It pulled ahead from Fast6's weekend since last 2 weekends so I guess it will make more than $225m. The only wild card is Wonder Women opening which should mostly kill this. Universal kept this one in more theaters as well which is helping it, plus the last two weekends were dead for openers.

BTW that's a close race between #1 and #2. It could be the case that GotG2 takes #1 again this weekend if AC is over-estimated but I think Fox will find a few dollars to keep it above GotG2's number.

Re: Weekend Estimates (May 19-21)
Sad about Alien's numbers it was messy and frustrating just like Prometheus, but gorgeous to look at and tons of fun. I really hope this one is profitable so that we'll get another one and it will finally link directly to the first Alien film. It would be such a tragedy to have come this far with the prequels only to end the series without that final connection it was leading up to.

Overall a poor showing for A:C. The only film to do more than $4M previews and open less was Paranormal Activity 4; I think this is gearing up to have Godzilla legs. $80M tops domestically.

Re: Weekend Estimates (May 19-21)
I never got why the analysts thought it would do 40 million off of the 15 million Friday. That was always a farfetched proposition. The series is going down the drain and I think they can squeeze one more movie out but that's about it.

Looks like this will be the smallest overall box office total for Pre-Memorial Day weekend since all the way back in 2001.

Fox will definitely wait until Disney releases GotG2 final numbers to see how much they can fudge. I'm pretty sure they will have to do some creative accounting to get #1 with finals.

Re: Weekend Estimates (May 19-21)
Very underwhelming debut for Alien: Covenant. It will still be quite profitable for the studio because it cost under $100M to make, but as far as expanding a new franchise these numbers are the least bit impressive. I think they'll get one more movie out of it before putting the whole thing to rest for a while until the next inevitable reboot. Good drop for GotG2 though and I'm very curious to see what the final numbers look like.

I love it. The monumental return of the alien franchise will just be chalked up as "yet another installment". Stop trying to make Alien happen, Ridley! Lightning doesn't strike twice.

Re: Weekend Estimates (May 19-21)
I don't understand why FOX is so resistant to making another space marine vs. Alien war movie. People love Aliens, yet they've never really attempted to go back to the well there. Seems far more mainstream than what Ridley is doing.
Anyway, zero doubt the series needs another long rest. I guess I'm down with Scott getting one last installment to wrap his crap up, but it needs a decade off after that.

Re: Weekend Estimates (May 19-21)
Just realized that GiS is at $43m total. That's a great multiplier from a $11m OW, I expected 3 or 3.5 but it should easily have multiplier of 4+.
