Awful. Truly awful. On the level of One Missed Call or the Prom Night remake.

Does the plane scene happen at the very end or is that actually part of the story?

Re: Rings
Take The Ring, remove the atmosphere, strip out all the scares, add DTV-level acting, and voila, you have Rings.

Damn. I'd watch a movie about terrorists mass broadcasting the Samara video using the internet.

Re: Rings
Terrible Film. It was just boring. I was wanting to go to sleep. The theatre was cold as hell too. Jeez louise. Only two moments got my interest. The new video images and the plate of chicken fried steak.

Re: Rings
I did not mind this. It is nowhere near as strong the 2002 film, which is an atmospheric and highly involving gem and one of my favorite American horror films of the last twenty years, but it is superior to The Ring Two. It is never scary, but it is handsomely photographed with the obligatory blue-green tint, and the story is modestly intriguing: I am glad they expanded upon the idea of an underground culture developing around experiencing and surviving the videotape (even with the strained elements, such as the Ring-themed nightclub on the seventh [!] floor). And the acting is fine: Matilda Lutz is a charismatic and fetching heroine; Vincent D'Onofrio contributes imposing gravitas the way Brian Cox previously did; etc. I will give it a B-. The airplane-set prologue is clever, but it ends too soon. They should have shown Samara contortion-crawling down the aisle as the plane enters a death spiral.

Re: Rings
One is left to wonder if Professor Big Bang Theory just honestly crashed his car. They forgot the scene where he sees Samara in the road and wildly swerves.

Re: Rings
The 360-degree camera move around the fallen television as Samara lifts it and emerges is cool.
Another memorable shot is the rain moving upward outside the window, right after the professor watches the tape for the first time.
I do not care what anyone says. This film has visual panache.

Re: Rings
Its visual tricks are cheap, though. Easy. No attempt at innovation.
And the only thing good about the lead actress was her ass.

Re: Rings
Her performance seems perfectly competent to me. No one is awful. No one is on the level of the female lead in The Bye Bye Man.

Re: Rings
It looks like a DTV horror sequel. Nothing separates this visually from something like Hellraiser: Deader.

David has me re-considering seeing this now. I wasn't going to see it theatrically because it sounded awful but now.... maybe.

Re: Rings
*1/2 / ***** (D-)
It's not badly filmed or (that) badly acted or (THAT) badly scripted like most of the horror sequels tend to get these days. But not only is it unnecessary plot wise (as it pretty much covers the same story as The Ring Two) it really didn't need to happen so many years after the last one.

Re: Rings
I liked the atmosphere but there is nothing new in the movie that hasn't been done better in the first movie. Samara's scenes were not even creepier this time and they thought just adding technology would make this look cooler. The airplane scene was cool though but the movie goes downhill from there. Still its not the worst horror movie of the year, The Bye Bye Man takes the lead there.

Re: Rings
Quite embarrassed to say that I kind of liked this. It was not nearly as good as the original but it was well-shot and entertaining, even though the acting was basically awful across the board. I thought the story went to some interesting places. Maybe because I had rock bottom expectations but it was passable. B-
