Re: Oscar Nominations Anticipation
No real surprise at all except for Michael Shannon. Very by the book in all major categories.

Re: Oscar Nominations Anticipation
Gotcha, I see that now. Huffington Post had a list with a number of discrepancies, including listing Amy Adams.

And from what I've heard, Annette Bening missing for 20th Century Women is kind of a travesty. It should have been those two and not Negga and Streep.

Re: Oscar Nominations Anticipation
Amy Adams was always going to be the weakest link in that category, especially after Streep and Huppert getting the big GG boost (one from the speech and one from winning). I predicted Bening for the last spot, but certainly not surprised by Negga either.

Re: Oscar Nominations Anticipation
the production design for fantastic beasts and passengers was largely done digitally - where's the line between that and visual effects?

Somebody had to design all the things that were accomplished by visual effects, right? I don't see something being done digitally as excluding it from the art of production design which is more the aesthetics. VFX is more of how good it was accomplished.

Re: 2017 Oscar Nominations
Was Mel a huge surprise? I had him predicted and then changed it at the last minute to Scorsese. I don't think it's a big surprise he was nominated.
Amy Adams missing was a surprise to me. I wish Bening would have gotten in.
Fences got 4 more nominations than it deserves. Ok ok, it deserves the acting nominations. But that's it. Worst movie I saw in 2016. Excruciating to sit through.
Poor Silence only got one nomination and it's for something that doesn't really matter so it's definitely not gaining any traction at the Box Office now.
I'm glad Viggo got in for Captain Fantastic. Loved that movie.

Re: 2017 Oscar Nominations
Considering the anti-racism theme, yes I'd say Mel was a surprise.
I was wrong though. Kubo getting VFX was a nice surprise too and well deserved. The big categories mostly suck though.

Re: 2017 Oscar Nominations
The nominations have been a bit of a non event this year, haven't they. I don't see many as reports or people talking much about it as last year.

I'm really glad to see Mel get in there, but I'd been more surprised if he wasn't. Also, Viggo Mortensen definitely deserves a nom for leading actor in Captain Fantastic.
