Which years would La La Land have lost BP?
If La La Land was released in previous years, I think it would still be the frontrunner in most years:
2015 - "Spotlight" - easy win for La La Land 2014 - "Birdman" - assuming no Whiplash, there will still be a lot of vote splitting closeness but I think La La Land still prevails 2013 - "12 Years a Slave" - 12YAS wins narrowly, although an argument could be made that the great presence of black characters in supporting roles in La La Land could help offset guilt voting against 12YAS and squeak through 2012 - "Argo" - La La Land wins esp. with Affleck omission for BD 2011 - "The Artist" - big vote split here, but I think more of the voting demographics grew up with musicals than with silent films so La La Land still wins 2010 - "The King's Speech" - actors voting body help barely push this to win 2009 - "The Hurt Locker" - La La Land wins BP but Bigelow gets BD 2008 - "Slumdog Millionaire" - La La Land wins, I think with stronger passion 2007 - "No Country for Old Men" - La La Land wins as No Country and There will be blood vote splits. 2006 - "The Departed" - La La Land wins but loses BD 2005 - "Crash" - I think La La Land with no gay characters becomes the anti-Brokeback Mountain alternative rather than Crash, wins even more narrowly than Crash did 2004 - "Million Dollar Baby" - still too soon for another musical win after Chicago, Million Dollar Baby wins 2003 - "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" - ROTK wins since musical won previous year 2002 - "Chicago" - The Pianist wins due to vote splitting 2001 - "A Beautiful Mind" - ABM wins with Moulin Rouge vote splitting

One of the most overrated films I have followed no doubt

I haven't seen all movies this year but I am not a big fan for La La Land win. Aside from the camerawork and dance numbers it doesn't have much to offer.

I think the Artist beats almost everything on the list except ROTK

LOL, 12 Years a Slave would have easily won against The Artist or La La Land. Same for The Hurt Locker.

Slumdog Millionaire was a freak train that year, both critically and commercially. I doubt anybody stopping it.

My psycho brother's second favorite film is actually Slumdog Millionaire. Only behind Love, Actually.

He actually sounds pretty correct in his movie grading abilities.

Seems like LLL would have competed against Slumdog as the feel-good pick that year. I don't see it beating ROTK or NCFOM, either, but every other year seems like fair game to me.

The mighty Birdman would peck La La Land to its demise in seemingly one take
