First Man - next year's Oscar contender?
Neil Armstrong biopic starring Ryan Gosling, directed by Damien Chazelle from a screenplay by Josh Singer (Spotlight). Sounds like Oscar bait.

Hmm. Seems too rushed. Might be Chazelle's Joy. Hope it's good thougb, obviously.

so if it's filming early 2017 then it'll probably make it for December. Interesting... Could be Gosling's year if the role is meaty enough, although who knows who his competition is.

Should have been released on July 20, 2019.

If this is ready in time Gosling should be nominated. Depends how good it ends up being.

I highly doubt James Mangold and Woody Allen get nominated for Best Actor.

Having solved racism, I think the academy will try to tackle the immigration issue next year. I predict that one of the big 8 (Picture, Direction, Acting, Writing) will go to someone who is not allowed to attend the ceremony due to the muslim ban.
Does Innaritu have a movie this year? I wanna see him compete with Chazelle every year from now on.

inarritu doesn't have anything planned other than a vr project and first man isn't coming out until 2018 now.

Gosling will be nominated, but the film and Chazelle will not.

Re: First Man - next year's Oscar contender?
Doesn't really tell us much, but I'm looking forward to seeing how Chazelle manages a non-music-related film. Trailer will probably be out soon. That's usually how it goes.

Obviously it performed much better, but it reminds me of Steve Jobs. All the hype in the world until it comes out and nobody cares.

Re: First Man - next year's Oscar contender?
It seems to have performed in no man's land. Not big enough to make headlines and not small enough to be one of those platform BP releases that grows in momentum week after week. Bit a damp squib. It's probably done as far as BP chances go.

Re: First Man - next year's Oscar contender?
I kind of agree with Jedi. It can still make an awards resurgence if it has the right support. I mean, good box office would've helped. It should have been eaten up by patriotic moviegoers, but nobody really cared. Without the patriot angle, its filmmaking will come under more of a spotlight...and I don't know whether that's good enough.

It's critical reception is also just not at the "it's a winner" level.
