Hi, is Yo-kai the new Pokemon of Japan? surprisingly, it's going toe to toe with Rogue one

It's not very surprising. Yo-Kai Watch 2 beat The Force Awakens head-to-head last year in weekend admissions, and in their second weekends, too. Yo-Kai Watch 3 selling more tickets than Rogue One in their weekend showdown was more likely than not.

And yes, more or less, just with a younger audience. Yo-Kai Watch, the brand, was absurdly huge a couple years ago (one example - the first film delivered the second most-attended opening of all-time), but it's since cooled down quite a bit and will probably stabilize in another year or two like Pokémon did.

Distributor Toho had made several attempts to launch an annual animated franchise in December (the only major holiday month they hadn't claimed) in the same style as Doraemon (every Spring/March), Detective Conan (every Golden Week/April) and Pokémon (every Summer-Obon/July), but everything failed until Yo-Kai Watch exploded.

The fourth film is already scheduled for December 16th, 2017. Expect a Yo-Kai Watch film every third week of December for a long, long time. Hell, it seems we're going to experience a Star Wars vs Yo-Kai Watch weekend showdown every single third weekend of December for a long time to come as well.

Interesting fight between Yo-kai Watch and Rogue One. So it's them too last year.
The gap in price is so huge that a difference that big could becom close in admission.

And what's with both film having 50% drop than last year?

edit:
oops... not that big difference in the end I realize. Sharpclimb last year from TFA between 5pm to 7pm.

Just saw mimorin, could it be different pattern today than last year's? 171k Ykw vs RO 123k, 19:52 local time.

YW3 down 46% on OD. Will it do Pokemon/Shin-chan numbers this year ? Can't say it will have had much longevity.

Thanks. I'll do my best to have all the info you requested up in the next week. Computer issues have burdened me lately.

And I'll have Saturday's Results up shortly, followed by hourly Sunday ticket sale updates.

Saturday Results:
Tickets Sold/Available Tickets (% Capacity) - Film Title [Theaters/Showings]
172,980/513,863 (33.7% capacity) - Yo-Kai Watch 3 [240/1,594]
158,935/579,743 (27.4% capacity) - Rogue One [244/2,425]

Overall, while the numbers are perfectly fine themselves, even "impressive", they're somewhat disappointing considering how their predecessors performed. Yo-Kai Watch will win the weekend in terms of admissions, while Rogue One is likely to win the weekend in terms of revenue - the same result as last year's showdown between the two franchises.

I believe you mean ¥5 billion? :P

Yo-Kai Watch is going to fall short this year, probably aiming for ¥3.5 billion ($30-35 million) or so. Rogue One has a 50/50 shot at ¥5 billion ($40 million+), I figure; it should get over ¥4 billion ($35 million+) at the very least.

Yeah, Yo-Kai Watch's popularity is on the decline, but that's not unexpected considering how high it peaked two years ago. I imagine it'll stabilize in another year or two.

Star Wars isn't on the decline. The Force Awakens outgrossed, and sold more tickets, than Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, but failed to reach The Phantom Menace. Rogue One is just a spin-off, and was never expected to do traditional Star Wars numbers.

@mark66: I hope to have last weekend's actuals up tomorrow evening, along with this weekend's actuals, if everything goes well with my computer woes.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: Star Wars vs Yo-Kai Watch (Again)
So, weekend estimates:

¥650-675 million ($5.5-5.7 million) / 440,000-460,000 admissions - Rogue One
¥600-625 million ($5.1-5.3 million) / 560,000-580,000 admissions - Yo-Kai Watch 3

Rogue One is down ~46% compared to The Force Awakens, and Yo-Kai Watch 3 dropped ~42% compared to its predecessor last year.

The opening weekends, by themselves, are good/great, but they're quite underwhelming given the past openings of prior films in each franchise. Neither comes as too big of a surprise, though; Rogue One is a spin-off with no known names, and Yo-Kai Watch 3 was expected to drop since that franchise has to decline before stabilizing like every other annual franchise.

Rogue One is likely aiming for a total of ¥4-5 billion ($35-45 million).
Yo-Kai Watch 3 will be aiming for ¥3-3.5 billion ($25-30 million).

Their lukewarm performances will give Resident Evil: The Final Chapter an easy #1 debut next weekend (and control of the biggest screens), and since I doubt it drops much from its last two predecessors (it might even increase, since it's the last film), it might just end up being the #1 film this December.

Thanks. I'll do my best to have all the info you requested up in the next week. Computer issues have burdened me lately.

And I'll have Saturday's Results up shortly, followed by hourly Sunday ticket sale updates.

Thank you. Do not forget "Snow white" and "Duel in the sun". By the way this page is more accurate with the data: http://www.ir-p.com/eiga/eiga50/eiga1950.html

An advice. You will see that some movies are present in 2 years as "Ben-hur".

Watching more recent movies with this case as "E.T." Or "Ghost" I have discovered that probably these films show their true total gross (and not 55-60% like the others).

For example, it is said in this link that E.T. In 1982 (end of this year) has grossed 3.50 billion and 9.40 billion in 1983. If we add these figures as we have about 13.90 billion (and agrees very well with the 13.50 billion of your TOP 100).

I hope you have understood me. Forgive me for expressing myself so poorly in English. But it's to help you. Because in the 50s and 60s there are several films with this case.

Thanks, @enzo1988. I began work on your inquiry last week, but that was on my crashed PC. I'll redo what I had already completed, and then finish up the remaining films. Look for everything to be completed and posted, hopefully, on Wednesday or Thursday! And no worries about your English, it's fine! :)

But before that, I have to get this thread updated. I'll be posting last weekend's actuals here shortly, followed by this weekend's actuals, and finally the updated yearly charts. All of this will be posted in the next couple hours.
