 The Night Of (HBO)
This long-in-development miniseries starts tonight on HBO after a particularly tumultuous production period. Originally positioned as a starring vehicle for James Gandolfini, the series was redeveloped after his death as he had only shot the pilot episode by that point. Robert DeNiro took over as his replacement for a brief time but had to back out due to scheduling conflicts. Now it is finally coming to air with John Turturro in the lead role alongside Riz Ahmed of Nightcrawler fame. The pilot was released on demand a few weeks ago and I got around to watching it yesterday. It's absolutely riveting and chilling, there's a sense of dread that is just encapsulated in the entire thing and it's hard to shake. Riz Ahmed is the focus of the first episode (Turturro only appears in the final minutes) and delivers a phenomenal performance. I can't wait to see where things go.

This is the show True Detective should have been, IMO. It's AMAZING so far.

Sounds great. I'll be downloading it if and when Kickass is allowed back.

Yeah I want to see this badly too.
And yeah I'm saddened when I think of Kickass being taken down.

 Re: The Night Of (HBO)
It is an atmospheric and riveting series. I wish every episode was available at the same time.

 Re: The Night Of (HBO)
This show is fantastic so far. I love the atmosphere and Ahmed/Turturro are really solid. I have to agree with David about wishing all the episodes were released at once like Netflix because waiting for the next episode is becoming almost painful.

This and Vice Principals are terrific.
I thought the other black guy, now known as Duane Reid, was the killer all along. It seems too obvious now though. Maybe Nas did do it. He makes bad choices every episode.

 Re: The Night Of (HBO)
They're doing a good job of making you second guess every character. I'm not even sure Naz is innocent anymore and I was 100% convinced he was at the end of the pilot.

 Re: The Night Of (HBO)
The stepfather is still a largely unaddressed and suspicious character. And he is played by a recognizable actor (Paul Sparks from Boardwalk Empire, House of Cards, The Girlfriend Experience, Mud, etc.), which may be a clue his role will greatly expand before the end.

Good call on the stepfather. His scene was even more creepy than the mortician's.

 Re: The Night Of (HBO)
The stepfather is definitely a creep, but is it just me or is Naz making a whole lot of ridiculously bad decisions lately. Granted he was making some from the very beginning, but the tats/freebasing all before trial seems like a bit of stretch IMO. Freddie is obviously setting him up to fail, but I do find it impressive just how convincing Riz Ahmed's transformation is.
Such a versatile and fantastic actor.

 Re: The Night Of (HBO)
Finale was fantastic. That courtroom scene between Jeannine Berlin and Riz Ahmed was absolutely electric. And I thought the ending was haunting.

 Re: The Night Of (HBO)
The finale was solid even though it felt like there were still a few loose ends that needed to be tied up. Either way I really enjoyed this mini series.
