If you look up synonyms for laughable, you'll find words like pathetic, pitiful, and even stupid. In the context I was using the word, that's what I meant, but I guess you needed me to clarify that.

They are really upping the ante on this movie as far as marketing is concerned. At this point, I think it probably won't do worse than 8 million.

See, now I also knew that's what you meant, but that still don't mean the movie is pathetic, pitiful, or stupid, and the fact that it's getting the second best reviews of the year on rottentomatoes.com makes a case for that. I think that you're just not being openminded, but ah well. I just don't get how someone who has an avatar of friggin' ELEKTRA can call this movie laughable, pathetic, pitiful or stupid.

I said it looks laughable, and I'm entitled to my opinion, aren't I? Or I can't say my reactions to the trailer just because it's the second best reviewed movie of year? Can you respect my opinion, or are you too narrow-minded for that?

I respect that it's your opinion, and you can keep it. But that doesn't change the fact that I think it's a terrible one.

I saw "Kung Fu Hustle" at a preview in L.A. last night (04/05/05). Without reservation, this is a brilliant work (hell, it inspired me to register at IMDB so I could gush about it).
The version I saw was subtitled.
This is one of those pictures where the audience applauds at the final credits.
Totally over-the-top comic energy, a live-action cartoon. Some dark moments make me hesitate to recommend it for children, but I will probably take my six year-old when I see it again.
Brilliant nuanced character performances, great soundtrack, balletic action choreography, accomplished CGI that drives the story (instead of the other way 'round...). Witty homages to Kubrick and Chuck Jones, among others.
Kudos to Sony on their distribution and promotion (shame on Miramax for what they did to "Shaolin Soccer". What shallow vulgarians...).
5 out of 5. A classic. Bring a handkerchief for wiping the tears (of laughter)."

OMG
I went to the screening last night at the 600 theatre...What a Chaotic scene, as Sahara was also holding a screening, so there were 2 long, snaking lines, with lots of cutting GEEZ !!! But we got in...
Thank you Rotten Tomatoes & IGN.
A Great time was had by the Lucky Audience; I would say 5% Asian, 90% Caucasian, and 5% other LOL !!!
What a Fantasic Movie !!!
I've been waiting for this since Shaolin Soccer, 3+ years. I also own lots of his previous work, which I found didn't compare to SS. Now comes Kung Fu Hustle.
This HAS to be seen on the Big Screen to get the full effect, though I am still going to buy the DVD (the Official one, not the Pirated ones I've seen for months already in Chinatown hehehe).
All I can say is...
Stephen Chow is a Comedic GENIUS !!!
His Long years of working on this Film paid off.
GO GO GO to this Touching, Exciting, Action-Packed MASTERPIECE !!!"

I know I'm sounding like a broken record, but this is that WOM I was talking about. At 92% on RT it's also the best reviewed movie of the year.

I hate this movie.
I have to say that the action scenes in this movie is very good, the are what DRAGON BALL Z movie version should be. However, except action scenes, KUNG FU HUSTLE is nothing new for me( even is a step back, in the standard of Stephen Chow movies)..... It can explains why this movie's box office legs isn't good in Hong Kong.
However, I think that you people will like this movie. Although "Shaolin Soccer" is a $5.7 million production which gross more than $40 million worldwide, Stephen Chow said that he were not happy with "Shaolin Soccer" Box Office performance, because this movie became a box office bomb in US. Now, I think that KUNG FU HUSTLE is a movie for Americans, not for Chinese people like me....

So you're saying that while the action sequences were allright, there was nothing in between that held your attention? That's interesting, i assumed since this was supposed to be a bit of a comdey, that the inbetween sections would actually be more of a draw, than say, love denied (common theme I'm noticing). The whole quirkiness around this movie was supposed to be the storytelling and plot? Eh, I guess I don't quite understand what you mean by "movie for Americans."

I'm Chinese, and I love this movie, and so do many other of my friends. The WOM for it, as far as I can tell, is better than what Shaolin Soccer got. It's a movie that can be easily liked because the jokes in it are universal instead of regional or cultural. The first half is simply brilliant, especially with the first 20 minutes, where each guy thought he was the toughest and the baddest and only got trumped by unexpected sources. It weakened in the second half. Still, I love how Chow tried to pay homage to a lot of movies every turn possible. Just a great movie to sit through. You can't compare it to a martial-art movie because it's a comedy instead of an action movie, while in the mean time didn't make fun of martial-art. Very original concept.

Couldn't have said it better myself. One of my friends is Filipino but lived in China with his dad until he was 8, and he might have loved it the most of anyone I know. Everyone was in a euphoria when it ended, it was the perfect blend of comedy, subtle (and not so much) homages and awe-inspiring action. It's probably the most perfect comedy I've ever seen.

I know, it's incredible, the biggest PTA EVER for April! And April 22nd it's going to be released in 2000+ theaters according to BOM.

41,000 huh? Didn't Melinda and Melinda just have 74,000? I mean, for a PTA. Of course M&M got released in only one screen, so that's a bit of a deception.
2000 screens is a mssaive expansion, I don't doubt it will do decently, but if I remember correctly I suggested its release pattern should start will NY and LA, which it did. I feel these two cities are going to be far more receptive to the movie than anywhere else, even other large cities.
The odd thing is, that while I enjoyed it and thought it was a pretty good movie, I could see how many people wouldn't. It taps into a particular sense of humor (including the landlady running like the cartoon roadrunner) that many people won't enjoy. Its also still slapstick. For someone like me that isn't used to that, seeing the landlady crash into a billboard, or that barber assistant that always had his pants hanging half off his butt, were actually some of the odd moments. I enjoyed it most when Chow blared the soundtrack (I really thought it was a tasteful and fun song) and had the sweeping shots of the Axe Gang all decked out in sleek clothing. I appreciated the moments that were more serious, or comic, but not slapstick, much more than the raw physical humor parts. That's a personal disdain for slapstick however, but there aren't very many movies nowadays that keep us familiar with that genre.
Farrelly Brothers tried to do it for awhile, and Jim Carrey does, but I don't necessarily think that all of that audiance is going to see this movie.
The reviews are ok now, but expect them to drop when 2000 screen expansion comes. I enjoyed the movie, but as I said, I could see how many wouldn't.
I still don't see it reaching 15 million for some reason.
My review is up too: http://www.worldofkj.com/Galia-KungFuHustle.php
